A fight between husband and wife Mr. Christopher and Mrs.Thorpe started on Saturday evening, during a bonfire party. Their son who witnessed the dispute, turned violent and fatally shot his father in a desperate attempt to save his mother’s life.

According to reporters, the couple went inside of a mobile home and an argument ensued. “He was beating her, [he] kept punching her,” said Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Debbie Carter, according to newsmen. “Then they went from the living room to the master bedroom where he kept beating her.”

The couple’s 17-year-old son, Channing Thorpe, ran into the mobile home where he discovered his father strangling his mother, police say. The teen used a handgun to fire several shots at his father to kill him.

The boy’s mother suffered a bullet wound to the thigh, the Tampa Tribune reports. She received treatment at a nearby hospital and was later released.

Hugh Williamson, who lives a few doors down from where the incident took place, was saddened by the violence.

”You hate to wake up and hear things like that much less in your own neighbourhood,” Williamson told newsmen.

Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office are still investigating the matter. Channing Thorpe was left in the custody of his mother. He is not facing charges.

teenage-girl-475

A 22-year old man, Peter Victor has been arrested by the police and charged before a magistrate’s in Lagos, southwest Nigeria, for allegedly raping a 13-year old girl (name withheld)

He is now facing a charge of rape before the Magistrate, Mrs M B Folami.

The victim stunned the police and the court when she said she was not raped by Victor as claimed by the police.

She said she allowed Victor to sleep with her thrice because she loved him and because he has been assisting her family.

She revealed that Victor has been buying gifts for her and members of her family, adding that she usually takes the gifts home to show her parents who sometimes share from them.

She also revealed that when Victor was arrested and she was brought to the station, she told the police that she was not raped, but she was asked to shut up because she was a minor.

It was gathered that the girl’s father was aware of the relationship between Victor and her daughter when she returned late in their last outing one day and during questioning, the girl told her father that she went out with the man.

On further inquiry, she was said to have admitted to her father that Victor had been sleeping with her.

The angry father was said to have gone to the police to report that Victor raped his daughter. Victor was, therefore, arrested and charged to court on a one-count charge of having unlawful canal knowledge of the girl.

The Cross River State-born admitted having sex with the girl, but that he did not rape her as claimed by the police.

He also told the court that she is her girlfriend and that he has being assisting her and her family.

The police insisted that it was a case of rape and charged him under section 137 of the Criminal Code Law of Lagos State of Nigeria. He pleaded not guilty.

He was denied bail and ordered remanded in Kirikiri prison.

Man kills wife for failure to satisfy sexual urge

wife-killer

An Ilorin Magistrates’ court on Thursday remanded Mr.Musa Yusuf for allegedly killing his wife because she refused his sexual demand. He has been remanded in Federal Prison, Ilorin. The crime was committed

on Nov. 17 at the farm.

The accused was charge on a one count charge of culpable homicide, punishable under Section 221 of the Penal Code.

However, the brother of the deceased, Sanni Suleiman, told the court that the woman took some food to her husband while he was working at the farm and she didn’t return.

Suleiman said when a search party was organised, her corpse was found in her husband’s farm with mark of violence on her face. The body, he said, was concealed under weeds.

Furthermore, the prosecutor, Zachaeus Funsho, objected to the bail for the accused because according to him the alleged offence “is not ordinarily bailable”.

Funsho told the court that the accused “callously clubbed his wife to death and flew into thin air” before he was arrested by the police.

Magistrate Mariam Ahmed, in her ruling, ordered that the accused should be remanded in the Federal Prison, Ilorin, and adjourned the case to 13 December for further mention.

Boko Haram leader urges global jihad in video

By Tim Cocks

LAGOS, Nov 30 (Reuters) – The leader of Nigerian Islamist sect Boko Haram praises jihadist movements across the globe and
singled out the United States, Britain, Israel and Nigeria as enemies in a new video, according to a translation by the SITE monitoring service.

The 39-minute video “Glad Tidings, O Soldiers of Allah”, posted in a jihadist forum, features a speech by sect leader Abubakar Shekau with an unusually international focus for a group that has often seemed more pre-occupied with local gripes.

Unlike previous video speeches, which he delivered in his native Hausa tongue, the one posted on Thursday is in Arabic. Shekau pledges solidarity with Islamist fighters everywhere.

“Nigeria and other crusaders, meaning America and Britain, should witness, and the Jews of Israel who are killing the
Muslims in Palestine should witness … that we are with our mujahideen brothers in the cause of Allah everywhere,” he said, according to SITE’s translation.

The video appears to confirm the fears of security agents that Boko Haram has ambitions to join forces with other Islamist
groups pursuing a more explicitly global, anti-Western agenda – like al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), based in Mali.

Almost 3,000 people have been killed in fighting since Boko Haram launched an uprising in northern Nigeria in mid-2009,
enraged by the death of its former leader Mohammed Yusuf in police custody during a crackdown on the sect.

The video wishes “glad tidings” on Islamist warriors in “Islamic Maghreb” (the Sahara) and “the Islamic State in Mali”, as well as Somalia, Libya, Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Yemen and “usurped Palestine”.

He list “martyrs” in the global fight against world powers like Britain and the United States, including Osama bin-Laden.

“Don’t think that jihad stops with the death of imams, because imams are individuals,” he tells them. “Think how many sheikhs and men were martyred … Did jihad stop? No. Jihad doesn’t stop until Allah wills it to be stopped.”

WIDER AMBITIONS

The video ends with footage of fighters undergoing military training, then cuts to weapons and equipment it alleges were taken as spoils from the enemy, SITE’s translation says.

Boko Haram’s favourite targets are usually local in character: Nigerian security forces, Christian worshippers or any politicians and clerics who speak out against it.

It has only claimed responsibility for one attack on a Western target – a bombing of the U.N. headquarters in Abuja that killed 24 people in August last year – but security analysts fear it could soon carry out more attacks like this.

Security sources say Boko Haram has for years been sending fighters to train with AQIM in the Sahara. Some set up camp in Timbuktu after Malian Islamists seized control of it in June.

“Boko Haram may be Nigeria-centric with respect to its attacks, but it clearly sees itself as part of the broader international jihadist movement,” said Jacob Zenn, analyst at the Washington-based Jamestown Foundation.

To mark his first Barclays Premier League goal of the season, Mario Balotelli celebrated in a way only he could – by having the words of Genghis Khan inscribed on his torso.

The £24million striker was on target in his side’s 2-0 victory at Wigan on Wednesday night. It was only Balotelli’s third strike this term and his first since netting for City in their Champions League draw with Borussia Dortmund in October.

Kehinde noted that the Multi-billion naira mansion has been one of the issues dominating discussions lately in the country.

A summary of the allegation runs thus:
“The minister is presently resident in a house at Mabushi District Abuja built and handed over to him by SETRACO, a construction company that doubles at his crony.”

He added,’The minister’s failure to declare the said house in his asset declaration form with Code of Conduct Bureau, is a case of perjury if established.

“The minister’s financial escapades and liaisons are in Dubai and other corruption shelters overseas.

“These weighty allegations were at first peremptorily rubbished and dismissed by the minister as handiwork of his detractors and some mischief-makers who were out for extortion.

Richard Mofe Damijo(RMD) and GM, Delta state Tourism Board in N50million scandal

One of the pioneers of Nollywood, and now Delta State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Richard Mofe Damijo better known as RMD and the acting General Manager of Delta state’s Tourism Board, Ms. Philo Nkem Ajufo, have been accused of looting N50 million belonging to the ministry.

Dependable sources in the embattled Ministry revealed that a former commissioner in the Ministry had requested for a sum of N50 million to organize the “Delta State Expo 2007.”
However, it was learnt that the state government could not approve the said amount the same year for some reasons.
The source said the funds were eventually approved and released to the ministry of tourism under the leadership of Damijo in May, 2012.

He said: “As soon as the money arrived, the commissioner said that the ministry could no longer hold the event since six years had elapsed.”

“The Honourable Commissioners also argued that Deltans would have forgotten about the event – and therefore the money should not be used for the purpose it was released,” the source added.

Some documents obtained by newsmen from the Delta State Ministry of Finance show that the N50 million must be spent on the event for which the Culture Ministry applied for it.

The warrant, which was signed by one P.O. Evuojapha on behalf of the Commissioner of Finance indicates that N35 million of the funds was meant for the Tourism Board.

Closed insiders however said that Damijo conspired to issue a check of N35 million in the name of the General Manager of the state’s Tourism Board, Ms. Ajufo who allegedly deposited the sum into her First Bank private account number 3006131619.

The source said: “Mrs. Ajufo and RMD then shared the money.”

Another top government official said that, “It is very obvious that the manner the cheque was issued in the name of the board’s GM instead of in the name of the board was fraudulent. It portrays an element of fraud.”

A reliable source hinted that Ms. Ajufo used her share of the looted funds to start off a twin duplex building located at No.6 Dunkwu Crescent, Asaba in June, 2012.

The twin complex we gathered is behind Junior Staff quarters and opposite one of the branches of Redeemed Christian Church (RCCG) in the state.

The source further said that tourism board’s members had denied receiving any of the embezzled funds.

He said: “She accused Mr. Mofe Damijo of carting away the whole sum of N50 million even when her account was used to commit the fraud.”

It was also gathered that all staff of Ms. Ajufo have reportedly lost all patience with her manner of running the board. “The acting GM is very, very corrupt,” said a staff.

“As we talk, apart from her official car, the Tourism Board cannot boast of a single functional car. All the board’s cars are grounded. And in this era of technology, there is no single working computer apart from one in her office – which she doesn’t use. Her office is entitled to N1 million subventions every month, but as soon as the money comes, the commissioner and the GM share most of it. The left over is never properly used by the GM.”

Another source said that Ms. Ajufo embezzled some funds meant to secure an exhibition stand at the festival. “The GM collected N500, 000 from the government to procure an exhibition stand for Delta State at the Akwaba Festival held in Lagos in October, 2012. Instead, she pocketed the sum of N300, 000 and went for an ordinary table stand which cost her N200, 000 only. She is the most corrupt of all the GMs we have ever worked with in the board. She runs fraudulent deals with the Commissioner and they have both amassed wealth for themselves to the detriment of the people of Delta State.”
When contacted over the allegation, Ms. Ajufo, said, “Please, speak with the Honorable Commissioner for Culture and Tourism. Thank you.”

In his reaction, the actor-turned-politician denied all the allegations levelled against him, he maintained that he’s not aware if such amount was released to his ministry at any time.

Aremu Afolayan talks on his relationship with Sikiratu Sindodo

One thing that has distinguished Aremu Afolayan, one of the scions of Ade Love film dynasty, from his other siblings in Nollywood is his reported romance with older women. One cannot quickly forget his well publicised romance with London-based journalist, Yetunde Bustline some years ago.

While both Aremu and Yetunde were love items, their sizzling romance made different news headlines. Those who claimed to be in the know swore that Aremu is a dude that has special love for dating older women. Tale-bearers also bragged that apart from dating older women, Aremu loves them (older women) to be rich and ready to spoil him with money.

Just recently, it was rumoured that the handsome actor cum movie producer, Aremu was in a another sizzling romance with the former babe of top Oshodi transporter, MC Oluomo and actor, Kunle Afod, Sinkiratu Sindodo.

Though Aremu has denied any romance between him and Sikiratu, those close to him have argued that both actors are warming their beds.

Speaking with Nigeriafilms.com on the rumoured romance between him and Sikiratu when contacted on phone, Aremu revealed that the only relationship between them is a colleague relationship.

“I have not dated Sikiratu Sindodo. She is my colleague and a friend and that’s all,” Aremu stated.

Reacting further, the filmmaker disclosed, “I don’t know how they mean Sikiratu being in the game. I don’t even hear when people say I date someone. I think my relationship with anybody that I date should be my personal thing and concern. I don’t see anybody but myself.”

Flash! Insecurity: Ihejirika Orders Ejection Of Civilians From Army Barracks With Immediate Effect

In the wake of terrorists attacks on army cantonments in parts of the country, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Azubuike Ihejirika, has directed that all civilians and non-military personnel residing in all army barracks be flushed out.
His words: “All illegal civilians and those above 18 years should vacate the barracks immediately in view of the security situation in the country. Any Commander that fails to flush out these persons should be ready to face serious sanction.”
The directive of the Army chief came just as he disclosed that since assumption of office, his administration had paid off a massive debt portfolio of over N2 billion which he inherited from UBA and Oceanic Banks. He said he could not lay a finger on what previous administrations of the Army did with the money.
Ihejirika who was speaking at the closing of the annual COAS Conference in Asaba said on terrorism: “Nigerians should expect more comprehensive action by the military and all the security agencies.
Some of the moves the army has initiates include  that unit commanders should liaise more, supervise and monitor their personnel more closely than they have done in the past. So 2013 would be decisive.”
He directed that all vehicles used for internal security operations, be painted in army colours immediately to forestall the type of blackmail recently witnessed from Reuters International news agency, noting: “The Nigerian Army is dealing with enemies who have no other business that to plan mayhem, destruction and murder from morning to night.”
He said that within the last two years of his administration, 435 officers’ quarters and 6,337 soldiers accommodation had been rehabilitated while by 2013, over 10,000 soldiers and officers’ accommodation would be rehabilitated.
On the porous nature of Army barracks like that of Jaji, he said: “Yes, several of our barracks are not fenced but in the last two years, we must have fenced four barracks. But we are talking about may be 80 barracks that are not fenced.”
“Doing that will entail a lot of resources, a lot of support which the current budget may not contain. But again whether barracks is fenced or not, it does not serve as excuse for any commander to allow what happened to happen. But one thing I would say is that the lack of fence compounds the challenge.
“Now, every commander must think of ways of ensuring that what happened in Jaji does not happen. What is important is that you have put in your best in terms of planning, in terms of security measures, in terms of intelligence. Even when barracks are fenced, fences could be climbed, houses could be broken up, and we are not going to fence cities.
“What it means is that fencing of barracks would not be the only solution but it would aid security.  A board of inquiry has been set up by the Nigerian Army and another one by the Defence Headquarters. With these two inquiries with various terms of reference, I believe that a number of  revelations will come up which will further help us to ensure that such a thing does not come up.
On the vexed issue of intelligence gathering which many Nigerians believe is missing, the Army chief said: “The Nigerian Army works in collaboration with other services. We work hour by hour, and day to day with the SSS. We also receive support from the Nigerian Intelligence Agency. Apart from that, there are also certain international bodies that also relates with us.
“You are also aware of my visit to the Inspector General of Police. We also agreed on ways of enhancing intelligence collection and then dissemination. The conference also emphasized the need for national intelligence fusion. What it means is that all the various measures are going to be fast tracked to ensure that intelligence is further enhanced.
“You should know that it is a running battle because the people you are fighting are people within the country who know what measures you are even taking to checkmate their terrorist activities. That is why I also drew the attention of commanders on the need for them to, on a continuous basis, devise new tactics in dealing with the problem”.
He warned that henceforth monitoring committees from the army headquarters are going to be set up too to monitor the Commanders in the field adding, Make no mistake about it, Command responsibility is one area we will emphasize more next year”.
Asked if this action will lead to purging the force of unserious people, he said, “That one is obvious. I have already informed Commanders and they know. They should not wait for the Chief of Army Staff before taking action along the line’.

Flash: Bill To Correct National Flags, Coats Abnormalities Passes 2nd Reading

A bill seeking to correct abnormalities in the Flags and Coats of  Arm Act of 2004, on Thursday in Abuja passed through second reading in the House of Representatives.
The bill seeks to enact the National Symbols Act, 2012, defining a procedure for States to follow to have their flags, symbols and other emblems.
It also seeks to expressly authorise the use of State Flag, State Coat of Arms and how it should be used vis-a’ vis the National Flag.
The Nigerian National Symbol includes the National Flags, National Coat of Arms, National Anthem and National Pledge.
The Flags and Coats of Arm Act of 2004 does not provide for States flags expressly, but it permits it by making reference to it.
Leading  the debate on the general principles of the bill , Rep. Karimi Sunday (PDP-Kogi) said the bill seeks to correct some abnormalities in the old Act.
He noted that some States currently have flags and symbols without following the correct procedures, and displaying them without the National Flag.
“It will be wrong for a State to display its own flag without the National Flag.’’
The lawmaker said that the bill would impact on the psyche of an average Nigerian  to think of himself as a Nigerian first before he thinks of himself as member of his “ tribe, religion, ethnic group or State.“
Rep. Sunday urged his colleagues to support the bill, saying that it would foster national unity and instil patriotism among Nigerians.
“Nigeria no doubt is at one of the most challenging times in her national history where various factors militating against the Nigerian State keeps rearing its head.
“All efforts geared at fostering unity, nationalism and patriotism should therefore be encouraged, while all factors repudiating the Nigerian State must be discouraged.’’
In his contribution, Rep. Leo Ogor (PDP-Delta ) expressed his  support for the  bill, saying  the that “ the Green White Green is the symbol of our authority.’’
He expressed concern that some states were having their own flags,  saying that if the trend continues, Local Government might also want to have their own flags.
He averred that any state that desires to have its own flag “ should know that there is only one nation.’’
“The National Flag should be our only flag, it is our national identity.’’ Ogor said.
In his remarks, Rep.Ossai Ossai (PDP-Delta)  aligned himself with the views of Rep. Sunday that the bill was intended to unite the country.
“This bill will promote patriotism, a feeling of united Nigeria and Sovereign State.’’
However, Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila(ACN-Lagos)  deferred in his views, saying that  states having their flags or other symbols does not connote that Nigeria was not a united nation.
He said that any states could have their flags side by side with the National Flag.
“They can go side by side, if National Flag is disrespected, we can bring an amendment and not repeal.
“I don’t think the bill should pass through the second reading.’’
The bill however, scaled second reading when it was put to vote by the Deputy Speaker, Rep. Emeka Ihedioha.
He referred it to the House  Committee on Justice for further legislative work.
Meanwhile, the House had adjourned plenary to Dec.11 to allow House Committees complete work on 2013 appropriation bill.

Governor Fashola Arrests Policeman Riding An Okada On Express Road

Governor Fashola yesterday Thursday November 29th ordered the arrest of a policeman riding a motorcycle on Lagos/Abeokuta expressway.

The governor spotted the policeman when his convoy was passing on the Ikeja section of the expressway. Policemen in the governor’s convoy effected the arrest and immediately whisked him away in their van.

Fashola later told newsmen that the arrest was to serve as a deterrent to those who felt that they were above the law and so could break the state’s laws.

“There is no one above the law in the state. People who are not prepared to obey our laws should leave the state.

“There is no society where laws are not broken, but the state government would continue to increase its enforcement so that there will be high level of compliance”, he said. (PM News)

Shocking Pictures: Man Shows How His Daughter’s Fiance Bather Her With Acid

The motive behind the acid bath of 22-year-old Chika Egbo by her estranged lover, David Sulaimon, remains elusive, but one thing is sure, the victim may not remain the same again.

Chika is a student of the Enugu State College of Education.

Last Tuesday, when our correspondent visited her at the Burns Unit of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Egbo has become a shadow of the beautiful girl she was.

The substance Sulaimon allegedly poured on her had destroyed every visible skin from her chest upwards.

She mumbled to her father, a Taraba State-based businessman, as she could neither see nor speak properly at the time.

When her father, Matthew Egbo, narrated the incident that led to Chika’s state, the story brought tears to his eyes as he lamented that his daughter would never be normal again.

Matthew said, “In March 2011, someone who identified himself as Lekan Sulaimon called me, asking for my daughter’s hand in marriage. We talked a lot and I promised to speak with Chika on the issue.

“My daughter later told me he was the boy she was in love with and said she had resolved to marry him.”

After much discussion, Matthew told Sulaimon to bring his parents for proper introduction, but the suitor said his father was ill and needed to be taken abroad for treatment. He also said his mother was abroad.

Matthew said, “On the June 25 date that we agreed on, Sulaimon brought seven men and four women dressed in Yoruba attire to my hometown, Enugu, where we held the introduction.

“But around November last year, my wife travelled from Taraba to Enugu and Chika told her she was pregnant.”

According to Matthew, Chika told her parents they should not be alarmed since she and Sulaiman had agreed to get married.

Chika was instructed to go to Lagos and tell Sulaiman’s relations about the pregnancy.

But when she got back from Lagos, Chika told her father that she discovered that most of what Sulaiman had told her about his parents were lies.

Matthew explained, “For instance, Chika discovered that Sulaimon’s father was hale and hearty. The father told her he was not aware of any plans by his son to get married.

“She also learnt that the mother was not abroad too. She visited her and she told us the woman received her well and even expressed joy that his son had found someone to marry.

“But after the visit, we heard nothing from neither Sulaimon nor his parents until after my daughter gave birth to a baby girl on May 4.

Our correspondent learnt that Chika had broached the idea of abortion to her parents, as she told them it was apparent that the man she was in love with had lied to her all along.

Matthew forbade her to consider abortion. After the baby was born, Chika was said to have informed Sulaimon, but he gave series of excuses why he could not visit her.

He reportedly told her he was facing some challenges and did not have the wherewithal to take care of the baby at the moment.

After a few months, Chika’s baby girl was weaned and taken to Taraba to live with Matthew and his wife.

The Egbos said they took the decision to take the baby off their daughter’s hands so that she could continue her study.

PUNCH Metro learnt that in November, Sulaimon began to request that he needed to see his baby, but Matthew told him to bring his parents to come and iron things out.

Chika was said to have insisted she did not want to have anything to do with the young man anymore.

But on November 5, Chika travelled to Lagos after Sulaimon had informed her that his mother wanted to see her. The unsuspecting girl left Enugu without informing her parents.

“My phone just rang that day and I was told to come to Lagos because a young man had poured acid on my daughter,” Chika’s father said.

Matthew said the message came as a rude shock since he was not aware his daughter went to Lagos. He explained that the police were the ones who got his number from her phone.

He said,“What I learnt was that when she arrived Igando, Lagos, Sulaimon met her and she demanded that he should take her to his mother who wanted to see her.

“What we gathered from the little she could mumble to us was that Sulaimon went behind a house and as they were about to pick an okada to his mother’s house, he brought out a polythene.

“But when they stopped at a point and Chika thought they were going to proceed to his mother’s house, he just opened a container in the polythene he was carrying and emptied its content on her head.

“She told us when she realised that what Sulaimon poured on her had began eating into her skin, she raised the alarm and called for help.”

PUNCH Metro learnt that passersby and sympathisers, who had been alerted to the young woman’s plight, pursued the fleeing Sulaimon. He was caught and taken to Ikotun Police Station.

“Till now, I still don’t know why he did what he did,” Matthew said.

Divisional Police Officer of Ikotun, Mr. Augustin Akika, confirmed the incident, but said the suspect had been transferred to the state Criminal Investigations Department, Yaba.

Flash: Case Of Indecent Dressing Against Tunisian Woman Raped By Police Dropped; Officers Now Face Charges

Tunisian authorities on Thursday dropped a case of possible indecency against a young woman allegedly raped by two policemen, her lawyer said, adding the accused security officers would now face charges.
“The charges (against the woman) were dropped for lack of evidence and the judge has decided to (charge) two policemen for rape and a third for corruption,” Bochra Belhaj Hmida said.
The case was dismissed “against the woman and her boyfriend,” another lawyer Emna Zahrouni said.
The 27-year-old rape victim faced possible indecency charges with her fiance based on the testimony of the alleged rapists, policemen who say they took the couple by surprise in an “immoral position” just before the attack purportedly took place.
A judicial source has previously said that the police had taken the couple by surprise as they were having sex in their car.
Two of them then took the woman to the police car, where they raped her, while a third restrained and tried to extort money from her fiance, the source added.
Last month a magistrate had questioned the woman, alleged raped on September 3, to decide whether she was to be charged with indecency.
The case sparked a storm of protest in Tunisia, with NGOs, media and opposition figures saying the proceedings had transformed the victim into the accused and reflected the Islamist-led government’s policy towards women.
Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali, from the ruling Islamist party Ennahda, said in October that the policemen, arrested shortly after the incident, would be “severely judged.”
But he also said there may be a case of indecency to answer.
However, Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki in October offered a state apology to the woman.
“The Tunisian president received the young woman raped by the policemen… and after listening to the details of this painful case… he expressed total sympathy (with the woman) and offered a state apology,” a statement from his office said.
Since the Islamists’ rise to power after last year’s revolution, feminist groups have accused police of regularly harassing women, by challenging them over their clothing or if they go out at night unaccompanied by family members.
The principle of gender equality, enshrined in the Personal Status Code that was promulgated in 1956 under Tunisia’s first president, Habib Bourguiba, made the north African nation a beacon of modernity in the Arab world.
Ennahda, the Islamist party that heads the ruling coalition, was heavily criticised for proposing an article in the new constitution, since dropped, that referred to the “complementarity” of men to women, rather than their equality.

Flash! Anti-Islam Film: Cairo Court Sentences Film Maker, US Pastor, 5 Other Copts To Death In Absentia

A Cairo court on Wednesday sentenced seven Egyptian Christians and a controversial US pastor to death in absentia for involvement in a movie that ridiculed the Prophet Mohammed, state media said.
The Christian Egyptians, including the film’s maker, are all located in the United States and were tried in their absence. The American pastor, Terry Jones, heads a small congregation in Florida.
During the trial, the judges were shown clips of the low-budget film, the Innocence of Muslims, and footage of Muslim protesters in Libya outraged by the film, the official MENA news agency reported.
Egyptian courts usually hand out the maximum punishment — execution in this case for a blasphemy verdict — and send the decision to the state’s top Islamic scholar to get his approval, which is always granted.
If the defendants do return to Egypt, they could get a new trial.
The movie, in which Mohammed is depicted as a buffoon and paedophile, sparked fury across the Muslim world. In Libya, Islamists killed the US ambassador Chris Stevens in an attack on the consulate in Benghazi.

Flash! What Now?: ‘Suspension of ATM Charge Not CBN’s Directive’

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Tuesday clarified that the recent announcement on the suspension of the N100 charge on the use of Automated Teller Machines (ATM) was a decision by the banks and not its directive as widely speculated.
Speaking exclusively via telephone, against the backdrop of public anxiety over the seeming tardiness by banks to comply with the announcement, CBN Director, Corporate Communications, Mr. Ugochukwu Okoroafor, said the banks agreed to give back to their customers by way of removing the N100 charge.
According to him, the CBN had only encouraged the banks to put their customers into consideration and make access to financial services more affordable to them.
The CBN Director said the apex bank could not enforce compliance or sanction the banks for the delay in the stoppage of the charge since it didn’t issue a directive to that effect.
Almost all the banks still charge other banks’ customers for transactions on their ATMs.
“We charge if you use other banks’ cards on us,” a staff in one of the banks said in confidence.
It was however gathered that the banks have embarked on high level discussion to devise a means of sharing the cost of the removal among themselves.
Nevertheless, the Bankers’ Committee has been blamed for misleading Nigerians with the announcement.
It had announced earlier this month after its regular meeting that the N100 ATM charge on  ‘other banks’ would be suspended with immediate affect when modalities for bearing the cost among the banks were yet to be fashioned out.
The Bankers’ Committee had explained that the resolve to halt further charges on ATM usage was borne out of the realisation that globally, such charges do not exist.

Two prophetess arrested for stealing and selling day-old baby girl for N.3million

Two prophetesses have been arrested by the police in Aba, the commercial hub of Abia State for stealing and selling day-old baby girl, the child of one Grace, 23, from Abiriba in Ohafia Local Government Area of the state. The arrested prophetesses, Loreta Emmanuel and Sylva were from Owerri Imo State.

Daily Sun gathered that a man, Grace said was her boyfriend, got her impregnated, promising to marry her. However, Grace, who dropped out of secondary school due to her father’s ill-health, was disappointed when her boyfriend reneged on his promise and she became confused.

As she had nobody to help see her through the pregnancy, she contemplated dragging the man to the welfare department in Aba so that he could be compelled to take care of her until she put to bed. Grace was said to have intimated Loreta, a mother of seven who lived in the same area with her of her plans.

But Loreta advised her to the contrary and instead told Grace that she would take her to a prayer ministry where, with prayers, her boyfriend would have a change of mind. The girl bought into the idea and in August last year, Loreta took her to one prayer house at Umuocho village, Osusuamaukwa in Obingwa Local Government Area of the state, owned by Prophetess Sylva.

Grace stayed in the prayer house for months without her prayers being answered and without also being allowed by the women to go home. They were deceiving her with false prophecy that God revealed to them that she would die if she decided to go home and give birth outside the ministry.

Grace out of fear that she might die decided to stay with them. When it was about time for Grace to deliver, Sylva took her to their home and introduced her to one Apostolic Church in Ekeakpara in Osisioma Ngwa Local Government Area where she attended occasionally. Grace was delivered of a baby girl on January 2 at the Apostolic Church and hours later she was brought back to Sylva’s house together with the baby.

But the unexpected happened the following day when Grace went to take her birth. Before then, another woman, who was later identified as Ijeoma, a nurse, had visited them. Grace told Daily Sun that as she came out of the bathroom, she saw the two prophetesses and the nurse carrying the baby and were about moving into a waiting car and when she enquired where they were taking her child to, they told her that the baby was very sick and wanted to take her to where she would be treated.

“I wanted to go with them but Loreta said I should stay behind and have some rest since it had not been long I put to bed. When I insisted, she said she had seven children and that she would not do anything bad to me, saying I was like a child to her. With these words and being somebody I knew, I stayed back.”

After a while, according to Grace, who wanted the National Agency for the Prohibition of Traffic in Persons and other Related Matters (NAPTIP) to come into the matter since she had no one to stand for her, “Loreta and Sylva came back to the house without the baby and when I asked them about the child, they told me that the sickness became worse and she died.

“As I did not believe their story, I demanded for the corpse, but they kept telling me cock and bull story and after putting much pressure on them they admitted that the baby was somewhere, saying I should pay them N1.5 million which they claimed was the amount they spent in taking care of me all the while I was pregnant. “I told them if that was the case, they should bring back the baby I suffered so much to have and after a while, that I will rally round and get some money to pay them. But they said I was joking and threatened to deal with me if I ask them about the baby again because they knew I had nobody that could come for me.”

The matter was reported to the police then and the two women became evasive. They could not be arrested as both of them parked out from their houses and relocated their ministries. While Loreta parked out from her No. 42 Amos Street to Okohia Street and relocated her ministry to Umuode in Osisioma Ngwa Local Government where she was arrested, Sylva on her own parked out from Ekeakpara and relocated her ministry to Abala in Obingwa Local Government.

However, luck ran out on the two women when following a fresh complaint by Grace, the police in Aba, led by one Rotimi with other security agencies, arrested the two prophetesses who confessed to the crime. They were said to have admitted selling the baby to a lady in Port Harcourt, Rivers State with the help of Ijeoma, the nurse who was still at large, for N300, 000.

While a senior police officer said the suspects would be transferred to the SCID, Umuahia, Grace was worried that transferring the case to Umuahia would create a problem for her and probably make the women go scot free since she said she did not have the money to be attending the matter at the state capital. She urged NAPTIP to intervene immediately and work with the police to help her recover her baby.

Joseph Akindele: I killed my friend to give him peace

Joseph Akindele, a middle aged man left people’s mouth agape when he confessed killing his friend, Mufutau, to relieve him of the persistent pain and agony he was going through due to an undisclosed ailment, affirming that Mufutau is “now happy in death.”

Official of Nigerian Civil Defence Corps dies while having marathon sex with a girl on empty stomach

Officials of the Nigerian Civil Defence Corps, Calabar, over the weekend mounted a manhunt for a lady who allegedly had marathon sex with their colleague, Ofem Eta, during which he died.

A source at 2, Orok Ita Street, Big Qua, where Ofem lived told P.M.NEWS that the man came back from duty on Friday evening and without eating any food went into marathon sex with the girl and passed away during the act.

“He came back from work and told me he was hungry and I prepared food for him but when I got there, his door was shut and when I knocked he told me to take the food back and bring it later. When I took the food to him later, his door was open and when I knocked he did not answer. When I went in I saw him lying naked on his bed,” the source said.

Ofem who hails from Mkapani in Yakkur Local Government Area is alleged to be fond of having sex with girls in most cases on empty stomach.

A neighbour who did not want his name in print said the girl was among the several girls that visit Ofem.

“When she came she greeted us but we did not take particular interest in her and when she came out of his room we did not say anything to her because we did not suspect anything unusual until his town girl brought him food,” the neighbor said.

He said the girl took away Ofem’s phone probably to avoid any trace because she and the deceased night have had some communication before the visit.

“People from his office came here and disturbed the whole street but they could not arrest anybody because the girl went away with his phone,” the neighbour said.

When P.M.NEWS visited the Corps’ office, the Public Relations Officer, Mrs Nkoyo Bassey said: “The man was enjoying himself so that is strictly his personal responsibility and not the Corps’. Have a good day”.

A source at the Operation’s unit of the Corps where Ofem worked before his death said there are efforts to track down the lady “but for now we have not arrested anybody”.

Students protest over appointment of VC

Students of the Federal University of Technology, Minna under the aegis of Concerned Citizens of Niger State staged a violent rally at Gidan Kwano campus of the institution, over the choice of Professor Musibau Akanji by the National University Commission as the new Vice-Chancellor of the institution.

The students numbering over 200 and carrying placards with various inscriptions blocked the main gate of the campus as early as 7:30am and vowed to make the institution ungovernable if the appointment of Professor Akanji is not dropped.

This is coming on the heels of a letter written to the governing council on Monday by a group threatening to burn down the two campuses of the university if Professor Akanji who is from Kwara state is sworn in as the 6th Vice-Chancellor.

It took the combined effort of the Police and the security unit of the university to disperse the protesting students who vowed to return if their demand is not met.

Efforts to get the principal officers of the institution to comment proved abortive as none of them was available when our reporter visited the campus. Their mobile phones were also unreachable.

It will be recalled that the last vice chancellor Professor Mohammed Audu is from Kogi state and his five year tenure ended on Monday

Woman Bewitched By Boyfriend, Suffers Non-stop Menstruation After Faking Pregnancy

In a bizarre incident that resembles scenes from a Nollywood script, an Esigodini man allegedly bewitched his girlfriend leading to her having a continuous menstrual flow.

The alleged black magic practice was reportedly “prescribed” as punishment for lying to him that she was having his baby. The incident which sent shivers down the spines of villagers occurred sometime last month. It is reported that Caleb Dube took his girlfriend’s cheating and defrauding antics the hard way and went to the extent of going traditional by allegedly bewitching her.

It is alleged that in May 2008, Nomalanga Ndiweni in a bid to defraud her boyfriend Dube who was based in South Africa faked pregnancy and demanded money to buy items in preparation for the baby and the unsuspecting Dube complied. After nine months, Nomalanga again phoned Dube informing him that she had conceived a bouncing baby boy before asking him to send more money for the upkeep of the child and its minder. The two agreed that Nomalanga would go to her boyfriend’s South African base whenever Caleb wanted to see his child.

It is alleged that the seemingly infertile Nomalanga took her friend’s child to South Africa every time she was visiting Caleb claiming that the child in question was his. Years reportedly passed by with Nomalanga using the same modus operandi until her friend left the village to move in with her husband in Gweru. When Caleb asked his lover to visit him with the baby, Nomalanga turned down the invitation giving various excuses prompting Caleb to come back home. Upon his return Caleb got the shock of his life when he was told by other villagers that he was duped by Nomalanga who made him believe that her friend’s baby was his.

It is further reported that Caleb confronted his girlfriend who failed to explain the whereabouts of the child. Caleb reportedly did not take the matter kindly and sought traditional help as revenge and Nomalanga is reportedly continuously dripping menstrual blood.

When contacted for comment Caleb expressed his deepest anger and had no kind words for his “greedy” girlfriend whom he described as a gold digger.

“I am deeply hurt by what she did. I slept over the issue and saw it wise to go to a traditional healer to get my revenge and this is exactly what I did,” he said.

When our news crew visited the Ndiweni family, her mother was in a state of shock to talk about the incident and asked Caleb to pardon her daughter.

“It is hard to cope with the situation. We pray and hope that Caleb will find it in his heart to forgive my child. At the moment we have taken her to a traditional healer in Chipinge,” she said

Lagos police arrest suspected serial murderer, robber

The Lagos State Police Command has apprehended Ibrahim Balogun, a 25-year-old man accused of perpetrating a series of murders in Somolu, Bariga and Fadeyi in the state.

PUNCH Metro had reported on June 25, 2012, that Balogun also known as Small Jpron, was declared wanted following a gang-related violence between Shaggy Boys and Downtown Boys which left at least five people dead in Ilaje, Bariga.

Balogun, who also goes by the pseudonym, Asarailu, which means death in Arabic, is said to be the deputy gang leader of Downtown Boys and a member of a sect, Eiye Confraternity also known as EFCC Boys.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Balogun was arrested on Bawahala Street near Pedro Police Station on Saturday.

A reliable police source narrated the circumstances that led to Balogun’s arrest to our correspondent.

He said, “On Friday, around 11:30am, Yusuf Adebowale, a resident of Somolu, took a commercial motorcycle to FirstBank branch in Fadeyi to withdraw N100, 000. As he was withdrawing the money from ATM, the okada rider, later identified as Dare, informed Balogun and his gang.

“As Adebowale left the bank, just a few metres away, Balogun and three other gang members attacked him and stole the money, phone and a wristwatch.

“Adebowale reported the matter at Onipanu Police Station and also told youths in the area about his ordeal. Less than an hour later, Dare, the okada rider, was apprehended by residents and taken to the police station where he confessed.

“Later that night, he led us to Balogun’s hideout but Balogun was not around. One of the policemen, identified as Abu, however released Dare without authorisation.”

Our correspondent learnt that the following day, around 11:30am, Balogun and four others allegedly went to rob residents of Bawahala Street and a woman alerted the police.

The police source said, “In broad daylight, Balogun and four gang members, heavily armed, went to rob. We received a distress call and policemen headed by Inspector Smart, rushed down to the scene.

“The four others escaped but Balogun was arrested and taken to Pedro Police Station where he identified himself as Ibrahim Oriyomi Folarin.”

Our correspondent learnt that the policemen could not identify Balogun even though the police had declared him wanted. However, scores of residents stormed the police station and quickly identified him.

It was learnt that there was pandemonium at the station as residents who had fallen victims to Balogun and his gang asked the police to hand him over.

Youths in the area were said to have brought a tyre and petrol which they threatened to set the suspect ablaze.

But the Special Anti-Robbery Squad took Balogun away and this restored normalcy to the station.

When contacted, the spokesperson for the state police command, Ngozi Braide, confirmed the incident to our correspondent on the telephone.

She said Balogun had been on police wanted list for a long time.

“I just spoke to the officer in charge of SARS and he confirmed the incident to me. He said the suspect (Balogun) is accused of murders, attempted murders and robberies,” she said.

God’s private Jets

By Ogaga Ifowodo
AND it came to pass, that the congregation of the Lord in the Word of Life Bible Church took count of the 40 years marked by the wonderful things that Jehovah, God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, had done through his humble servant, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, in their lives and they were ashamed that they had treated the anointed servant of the Lord very poorly.

They had left him to the indignity of travelling by car and commercial air travel to his many deliverance missions in near and far places even when his fellow Daddy Overseers owned private jets.

And being deeply shamed, they said unto themselves, Behold, in this year of our Lord, our father in Christ shall mark the 40th year of the “unique anointing upon his life” that has “brought salvation, deliverance, revival, healing and outstanding miracles to millions across the world as God’s power is demonstrated with signs and wonders.”

Now, therefore, let us hasten and do unto him according to the riches with which the Lord has blessed us; let us buy for him a private jet.

And in this, we shall do as our brethren in the Living Faith Ministries did unto Bishop David Oyedepo, and in the Redeemed Christian Church of God unto Pastor Enoch Adeboye, and in the Redeemed Evangelical Mission unto Bishop Mike Okonkwo, and in Christ Embassy Church unto Pastor Chris Oyakhilome.

Then shall we present the aircraft as a gift to our Papa Ayo, that he may fly without hindrance, delay or discomfort to the farthest reaches of the world, where the people walk in darkness and do not know God, and have not confessed Jesus Christ as their Lord and personal saviour, for behold, the kingdom of God is at hand.

Yea, let us do this mighty thing in the sight of the Lord that we may cease to be the laughing stock of our brethren in Christ who say of us, Surely, their God is a poor God! Wherefore do they preach prosperity? Oh, their God is a poor God indeed!

And it came to pass that on the 10th day of November in the year of the Lord, which also is the anniversary of his birth, the congregants presented unto their pastor, Papa Ayo, who also is the spiritual leader of Christians in all ofNigeria, aBombadier 601 Aircraft, the cost of which is about $5 million.

And the same was done in the presence of the President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, who knows a thing or two about not one but a fleet of jets and their constant replenishment.

And the President, whom Jehovah, God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, appointed over his people in the unpromised land of Nigeria, gave testimony of the servant of the Lord in words that I understand thus, Verily I say unto you, Papa Ayo is the uniquely anointed son of God in whom He is well pleased.

Hear and honour him with every material thing of which your hands and the blessing they have received are capable; but which, in his own words, went thus, “I can say without any equivocation that Oritsejafor, from the very humble beginning in 1972, has moved from strength to strength. … he is a Christian visionary leader who preaches the words (sic) of God clearly and eloquently as a good shepherd …

He has earned his respect among his peers and this explains why he is holding the two very important positions in Christendom in Nigeria as the President of CAN, and President of Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria.”

And the congregants made a great shout, such as could have felled the walls of Jericho, and there was dancing and merriment and the offering of praise to Jehovah who had brought this great deed to pass, according to his riches and glory, that the world may know that he is Lord and there is none like him.

Since Pastor Oritsejaforloudly entered the Jet-set Club, many Nigerians disturbed by the phenomenon of unabashed embrace of a hedonism usually associated with the heathen have begun to ask questions about what a true life of the spirit entails.

And the fruits of the prosperity gospel that has overawed a nation steeped in grinding poverty have now begun to set on edge the teeth of a few in the fold. Pastor TundeBakare of the Latter Rain Assembly, for instance, does not believe that without private jets the gospel suffers. And I agree. After all, Mary Slessor did not sail fromScotlandto Calabar in a private ocean liner.

Bakare sees not soul-winning but soul-weaning, the separation of church-goers, majority of them poor, from their means of keeping body and soul together. He sees thieves inpriests’ clothing and would have them imprisoned and then cast into the hottest part of hell on judgement day.

But not so some of his brethren whose doctrine of prosperity has long done away with the key tenet of sacrifice.

So we have heard the defenders of high-flying predator capitalists in cassock and collar, and very often in pin-striped suits, say that a pastor is deserving of his reward. Here on earth.

“There is nothing wrong for a preacher to own (sic) a jet. If people in the secular world can acquire jets for chief executive officers of big private enterprises, there is nothing wrong in giving gifts to a man of God of Pastor Oritsejafor’s standing. …

He deserves what he has been given,” says one Reverend El-Buba, General Overseer of Evangelical Bible Outreach Ministries International, Jos, clearly anticipating his own jet, the one he would fly to Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Iran, China, North Korea and even Judaist Israel as part of his All Nations for Christ mission. And, of course, there is nothing wrong with comparing self-proclaimed men of God and churches to CEOs and business enterprises!

The Pharisee-pastors and congregants defending crass materialism think they answer their critics by claiming that the jets belong to the church, and not to the Daddy Overseers.

The only problem is the damning evidence of bondage to Mammon; of the manic setting up of treasures here on earth: palatial mansions, jewelry, fleets of luxury cars (even including stretch limousines).

Ye shall know the truth and the truth shalt set ye free? Here is the truth: the predator capitalists in cassock and collar are rich men in the manner of that poignant parable of Christ in Matthew 19.

A rich man, who has followed the commandments, comes to the barefoot carpenter to know what else he might do to gain eternal life. Jesus says tells him to go and sell all that he has, distribute to the poor so he shall have treasure in heaven, and then “come and follow me.”

Whereupon the rich man went away sorrowful, “for he had great possessions.” Prompting Christ to utter the famous words, “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into thekingdomofGod.”
