Most Nigerians might spend the festive period in darkness as power plant collapses

20125251534_darkness

Although the government had promised Nigerians that this year’s Christmas season will not be spent in darkness, blackout looms in most parts of the country as three out of the six turbines of 220 mega watts (MW) each in Egbin Hydro power plants collapsed on Thursday.

According to the Nigerian Tribune, which reported the news, when the Tribune visited the premises of Egbin power plant in Ijede, a suburb of Lagos State, on Thursday, it was learnt that two units of the largest hydro power plant in Lagos had collapsed.

The Egbin power plant has capacity to generate 1320MW when operating at full capacity, but now it is generating below installed capacity at about 660MW. The Chief Executive Officer of Egbin Hydro power plant, Mr Mike Uzoigwe, told the Tribune on telephone that he could not entertain calls because of an emergency at hand.

According to him, “there is an emergency that requires urgent attention. I am sorry I cannot attend to you now, but you can call me later.” However, a staff of the power plant who declined to give her name confirmed the incidents. According to her, “before now, we have five units working optimally, the sixth unit is undergoing some rehabilitation. Due to significant drop in water level at the dams, two units collapsed this morning, leaving only three working.”

Prof. Greg Erhosa, the National President of Nigerian Thoracic Society, says no fewer than 15 million Nigerians are suffering from asthma, tuberculosis and other chest-related diseases. Erhosa announced

this while addressing newsmen at an annual national conference of the society in Ilorin on Saturday.

Erhosa, who works with the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, attributed the high number of Nigerians suffering from asthma and other chest diseases to lack of preventive measures.

According to him, asthma is chronic disease which has claimed lives of several eminent Nigerians and the downtrodden.

He called for establishment of thoracic health centres in each of the six geo-political zones to address the disease and other chest related ailments.

Erhosa urged the three tiers of government in the country to set aside fund for the prevention and care of chest-related problem among Nigerians.

He also canvassed for the recruitment of more experts in chest-related problem who would be in charge of preventive and cure of the diseases.

According to him, preventing the disease is not as expensive as treating it.

He said that the society would collaborate with American Thoracic Society and Africa Thoracic Society to eliminate tuberculosis, asthma and other chest-related problem.

The annual conference was attended by several medical doctors, pharmacists, nurses and other medical personnel from various teaching hospitals in the country.

Okada rider shot by police recovers, narrates ordeal

Mr. Atilola, a commercial motorcyclist, was shot at Ilupeju, Lagos, by a police officer who was enforcing the state government’s restriction on commercial motorcyclists. The incident, which triggered an

outrage, led to youth in the area as well as other commercial motorcyclists setting up bonfires and blocking vehicular traffic for hours.
Mr. Atilola who was shot while trying to help an emergency worker is presently recuperating in the hospital as he narrates his story on the hospital bed, bandaged feet are immobile, but lines of pain are etched on his lean face.
Two weeks ago, he was moved out of the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit into the Surgical Ward.
This week, the 27-year-old is scheduled to have another X-ray on his legs.
“My legs have since been affected as they are both immovable and it appears to be lifeless as I don’t have a feeling that I have legs anymore,” Mr. Atilola said.
The Okada rider said that he was trying to help save a life when his own life was almost taken. “I was in Mushin when this doctor who was putting on a white, long coat and holding a stethoscope approached me and begged me to take him to Ilupeju,” said Mr. Atilola.
“I refused but he kept on begging me to help save the life of the sick person he was going to attend to,” he added.
The doctor, who had paid him a visit at the hospital days ago, told Mr. Atilola that he would explain the “emergency situation” to any law enforcement officer they meet.
So the Okada rider agreed! As they approached Teju Junction, by Ilupeju bypass, the traffic light turned red. The Okada rider and his medical doctor passenger stopped.
“As soon as soon as I switched on the motorcycle ignition, a policeman who came out of hiding held my motorcycle from the back,” Mr. Atilola said. “I immediately turned off the ignition but unfortunately another one who also emerged from hiding came close to me and before I knew it I was shot at close range.”
After his shooting and amidst the chaos that ensued, Mr. Atilola’s younger brother, Sikiru, was among those arrested by the police. After repeated appeals, he was freed by the police; he immediately returned to their native Iseyin, Oyo State.
The police are yet to begin prosecution of the cop that shot Mr. Atilola. The victim is lucky to have survived.
At the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, where he had been since he was shot, Mr. Atilola said that he had been receiving free treatment.
On a recent visit, his wife, Tawa, readjusted the drip dangling above the bed and left the room to purchase an item. Her mother-in-law, Taye, helped her nurse her two month old baby.
Mr. Atilola said that he “strongly wishes” that the police officer who shot him and “caused me this disability” is made to face the law.
“I have not passed out excreta since November 6th, I only fart. They passed pipe to my male organ and that is how I pass urine out of my system,” he said.
“Since I have been in this world, I never experienced this kind of thing before. But I thank God I’m alive today.”

Varsity threatens legal action against absconding lecturers

Abak (Akwa Ibom) – The management of Akwa Ibom State University has threatened to initiate legal action against the families of some lecturers who refused to return to the institution after their post-graduate studies abroad.

Prof. Sunday Peters, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, issued the threat on Friday in Abak, while speaking on the Obio Okpa campus of the university.

He said that several of the lecturers, whose post-graduate studies were sponsored by the university, refused to return to Nigeria after completing the studies.

“Many have refused to come back after the training; some are coming back in batches.

“We shall, through the embassies of the countries, get them repatriated,’’ he vowed.

Although Peters did not disclose the number of the affected lecturers, he, nonetheless, said: “Six of them have returned and started work on both campuses of the university.’’

The vice-chancellor, however, said that the university had satisfied the rules of the National Universities Commission (NUC) regarding the requisite number of lecturers for each department.

“With the menace of Boko Harram in the northern part of Nigeria, we have a lot of southerners applying to come to our university.

“Nevertheless, staffing Akwa Ibom University is not a problem; there are enough lecturers for now. We also have adjunct lecturers and those on sabbatical leave,’’ Peters said. (NAN)

Raphael Akachi, suspect who hid heroin in TV transformers

Akachi-Tv-transformer-inset

Raphael Akachi, a suspected drug trafficker was arrested recently at his residence at Amuwo-Odofin by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).He had hidden 29.4 grammes of heroin in television transformers. The drugs were to be taken to China where Akachi resides with his Chinese fiancée.

NDLEA Lagos commander, Aliyu Sule confirmed the arrest. He said, “Akachi is an experienced hand in drug trafficking; he has established links with drug trafficking syndicates in China. We were lucky to have raided his apartment while he was processing the drugs for export. Akachi gets his supplies from Pakistan and smuggles same to China. During the operation, his Liberty Jeep was confiscated and investigation is ongoing.”

An alleged graduate of Anwaru Islam College, Agege, Akachi, who hails from Anambra state, was, prior to his arrest, making the final preparations to formalize his union with his Chinese fiancée.

“I take my time in concealing small quantities of Pakistani heroin in television transformers and fix them back into the power packs; I am not greedy for money. I regret my actions now and pray that my Chinese fiancé will understand and find a place in her heart to forgive me,” the 30- year- old suspect said.

Commending the arrest, the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Ahmadu Giade, said, “The concealment was near perfect as it is unimaginable for drugs to be hidden inside transformers of television power packs. It was a sophisticated mode of operation. All drug traffickers irrespective of the quantity are enemies of the state and the agency is determined to dislodge them.”

Kim Kardashian refuses to return engagement ring Kris Humphries gave her

Kim-Kardashian-and-Kris-engagement-ring

Kim Kardashian is refusing to return the gigantic engagement ring that Kris Humphries gave her when he popped the question. The pair were married for just 72 days and are yet to legally end their union.Sources say Kris wants the band — which cost him $750k, but is said to retail for around $2 million — returned.

But Kim — who’s now dating Kanye West — is having none of it.

“Kris is adamant that he wants the ring back,” said the insider.

“And it’s becoming a real sticking point between his and Kim’s attorneys. She has made it plain that she has no intention of returning it though and feels she is within her legal right to refuse as she went through with the wedding.

“However, Kris contends that the marriage was a total sham and that Kim only wed him for publicity so therefore she has no right to keep such an expensive gift.

“Kris doesn’t understand why Kim would even want to keep the ring anyway. It obviously has no sentimental value as she has publicly declared their wedding as ‘a huge mistake’ and she certainly doesn’t need the money, so why doesn’t she just return it to him?

CBN Governor, Lamido Sanusi Fires back at those calling for his sack

sanusi-lamido

The governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Sanusi Lamido Sanusi has lashed out on those calling for his sack over his purported statement that the federal government should reduce the work force in the country.

Speaking to Channels Television’s correspondent, Chukwuma Onuekwusi, in London at the end of the 13th session of the Honorary International Investors council meeting, Mr Sanusi said that those calling for his sack “are shying away from the reality of the time”.

He said he was not talking about the sack of civil servants but a reduction in the size of political appointees who take 70 percent of government revenue leaving a mere 30 percent for the 160 million Nigerians.

According to him “what Nigeria is practising is an American system of government that is very expensive”.

He said that he cannot join issues with anyone calling for his sack.

The Call To Sack CBN Governor, Sanusi, By NLC Is Hypocritical – CPC

sanusi-lamido2-150x85

The Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) has dismissed the call for the sack of Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN by the Nigeria Labour Congress as self-serving.

The party said the labour leadership’s call was only aimed at winning back popular support after the same leadership betrayed the masses when it unceremoniously surrendered at the peak of the popular revolt against the hike in fuel prices at the beginning of the year.

The NLC had on Wednesday called for Sanusi’s sack upon his submission that the civil service be trimmed for the purpose of fiscal discipline. In a statement issued by the party’s national publicity secretary, Engr. Rotimi Fashakin, the CPC, nevertheless, upbraided the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP for mismanaging the economy.

“Whilst we do not agree that the cause of the exorbitant recurrent expenditure is wholly due to the size of the public service work-force and that the sacking of half its size is the solution to the identified problem, we believe the call for the call for the sacking of the forthright Public officer for volunteering his personal opinion is equally preposterous. It is our belief that the fiscal indiscipline of this Jonathan-led administration has exacerbated the Nation’s malaise!”

“We equally believe that rather vilifying the CBN governor for the commentary, this should throw up meaningful discourse on extricating the Nation from the financial recklessness of this PDP-led Federal Government.” “In the first place, the CBN governor is not in a position to implement policy for sacking the Nation’s public servants. At best, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi aired his personal opinion. We are at a loss at the nexus between his personal opinion and the strident call for his sack, except there are other sinister underpinnings in this call.”

“As a Party, we have equally taken note of the ignominious manner this present crop of Labour leadership truncated, in January 2012, the people’s popular refusal to yield to the exploitative tendencies of the Nation’s rulers. In the course of scuttling the people’s revolt, some of these Labour leaders got appointed into some dodgy committees that were not primed to achieve result. This is why we view this call by the Labour leaders for Sanusi’s sack as a cheap, opportunistic (albeit languid) ploy to crawl back to the people’s reckoning.”

“We believe that responsible leadership is about selflessness and consistency. We advise the Nation’s Labour leaders to critically examine the policies of governments (Federal and State) that impinge on the well-being of the people instead of looking for scape-goat for cheap populism.”

INTERVIEW: My mother-in-law crashed my first marriage – Mercy Aigbe

Mercy-Aigbe2001

By OPEOLUWANI OGUNJIMI

Mercy Aigbe needs no formal introduction as one of the most-sought- after actresses in Nollywood. She’s one of the top rated actresses who has paid her dues in the industry. In this interview with Showtime Celebrity, Mercy opens up on many issues, including her marriage to her ex-husband, her recent marriage, career, challenges and others. Excerpt:

What’s been happening?

I have been busy working and some of my movies have been released in the market. I just completed my most recent movie titled, Suru Lere(Patience Has Gain). I also traveled to shoot the concluding part of my movie, Osas, and by December, we’re going to round everything up.

You started as an actress and now, you’re a producer, how has it been?

It hasn’t been easy because it involves more responsibilities. As an established actress and now a producer, you want to give what people will see and respect. Producing movies that are not up to standard will affect the way people look at me. So, it’s double work because I also play lead roles in my movies.

How much do you spend producing a movie?

Like I said, as a producer, I love to give out my best on a project. But with the kind of environment we have here, one of my challenges is piracy. Sometimes, when you have a project and you’re to spend like N10m, you’ll always want to cut cost because you’re not sure pirates will allow you recoup your money. But at the same time, because of my status and the kind of person I am, I always want to do what I want to do.

You being a Benin woman, why did you choose to act in Yoruba movies?

I’ll say it’s providence because it’s not by choice. I didn’t know I would be more prominent in the Yoruba movie genre. But I’m a professional- I studied Theater Arts at the University of Lagos. So maybe this is where God wants me to be for now.

Actually, I started off acting in soaps. I did a couple of soaps before going into Yoruba movies. And it was after I featured in few Yoruba movies that I started getting more scripts from Yoruba movie producers. It’s not as if I don’t get called up by non-Yoruba movie producers and it’s not as if I don’t want to diversify to feature in English movies or even produce mine, but for now, I’m okay with where I am .

You’re so fluent in Yoruba. Did you grow up in the West?

Yes, I grew up in Lagos but I would say I learnt the language on the job because before I started acting in Yoruba movies, I wasn’t fluent in the language. My father was the type who didn’t want us to lose our root so, most of the times, we speak Benin and English at home. It was because we lived in Lagos that I started picking up a bit of Yoruba. When I started, my scripts were written in Yoruba and I would pronounce words just anyhow. But because I love my job, I had to learn and as I continued acting, I got better with it.

So you knew you were going to be an actress?

Yes. That was why I went to study Theater Arts. I first went to Polytechnic, Ibadan where I had my OND in Financial Studies and Instead of continuing with my HND, I went to the University of Lagos for my degree in Theater Arts.

So what happened after the degree?

It wasn’t easy because I had to battle my dad who never supported my decision to go into acting. He didn’t believe I could earn a living with it. So it was hell until he consoled himself, in Nigeria, you don’t necessarily have to work with the certificate you have.

How much were you paid when you just started?

We were not paid at all. When I started, it wasn’t easy finding people who believed in me and take the risk to feature me in their movies especially to play lead because most producers wouldn’t be sure if one is capable of playing a character for a long time even after auditioning. So when I get opportunities to express myself as an upcoming, I was grateful even when I didn’t get paid. I wasn’t paid in most of the movies, and if I got paid at all, it was peanut.

Like How much?

I had been on the set of a movie for three weeks and at the end, I was paid N2000. And I remember on my way back home, I was crying because before I came into the industry, I already had a car and I was okay. So it was like leaving a lucrative job for an unknown place where I wasn’t even sure I would be accepted. I think my passion for the job kept me on until things became better.

What determines the kind of script you accept?

The number one thing is the script- it has to be well dialogued and has to make sense. I love to play a character that someone can learn from. Then comes the director, the casts and crew which matters a lot because it’s one thing to have a good script and another to bring it to life.

You said you don’t belong to any caucus. But actresses like Funke Akindele, Eniola Badmus, Bimbo Thomas and others belong to one. Are you a loner?

I’m not a loner o. I didn’t just have to join any caucus because after the movie, Ara, everybody just started giving me scripts. So, there was no need for it. But maybe I should say that I belong to all caucus because I have a good working relationship with everybody, whether it’s the Odunfas, Akos and others. Yinka Quadri, Oga Bello are my fathers and I work with them a lot.

And you didn’t get harassed by producers?

I wouldn’t call it harassment. Yes, men make passes at me because I’m very beautiful. It happens everywhere. I’m an adult and if I wanted to date someone, I would have but I didn’t date anyone.

Why?

Because I just believe that relationships in such industry doesn’t work.

You don’t trust anybody?

Exactly. I just have that thing at the back of my mind that such relationship won’t last long.

Was that what determined you choice of a husband?

Probably, but the thing is that I knew I wasn’t going to date anybody in the industry. So, I wasn’t attracted to anyone and didn’t allow any feeling to develop inside me for anyone. When I’m on set, I just do my job. But I can’t say it influenced my choice of husband. Fine, my husband isn’t in the industry. I didn’t know I would get married to a hotelier and a car dealer. I didn’t have a particular picture in mind. I just met him, fell in love with him because he was very kind, matured and understanding.

One hopes he doesn’t get jealous whenever you go to location for weeks?

It’s a lot of hard work being a mother, wife and a professional and still be on top of my game. Sometimes, the whole thing just gets to me and I feel exhausted. But I have an understanding husband who loves my job and supports me. He knows I love my job, he knows I’m an independent woman and I love to work for my money. I love his money too o but there’s this pride that comes with me spending my money. So he supports me because he knows my job makes me happy and he doesn’t want to have an unhappy and unproductive wife at home.

Whenever I’m away on location, I make his food and keep in the freezer. I also have domestic staff who help me out . My mother also help me with the kids whenever I’m away.

Doesn’t he suspect you having an affair whenever you are away on set?

The reason he doesn’t doubt is because when we were dating, I didn’t give him any cause to doubt me. According to him, he has tested me and he trusts me.

So how do you cope being the second wife. Don’t you and the first wife have clashes?

Laughs. This question is very funny and I’m going to deal with this now. What happened is that when I met him, he was already separated from his first wife. Although, they were still married, but no longer together. She lives abroad with the children. So, they were already separated when we started dating.

They weren’t divorced?

They weren’t divorced as at the time when I met him but now, they’ve finalized their divorce and I’m the only wife. They were separated for like five years before I came into the picture and their divorce case was in court. They were divorced before we got married. A lot of people don’t know the real gist- now I’m not the second wife but the only wife.

So now you’re happy?

Yes because even when I started dating him, I just allowed people to say whatever they wanted to say. They were still in court then, I didn’t want to say anything and just kept quiet and the town went agog. They finalized their divorce before our wedding and even before I had my son.

You’re a very beautiful woman, how do you cope with male advances?

I get a lot of that because people tell me I don’t look my age. I get a lot of male advances and it makes me feel good because I get reassured of my beauty even after two kids. So I tease my husband about it. A times I even let him know whenever someone makes passes at me so he can know I’m still hot. But jokes apart, I’m a married woman and I don’t want anything that will stain my name. I love my home and I pray to remain married for the rest of my life. I always know how to draw the line.

So how does he handle it whenever you get advances from men?

He just squeezes his face and asks me if I don’t know that I’m old and I just tease him back that it’s only to him that I’m old, the other guys don’t know that and we just laugh it off. But I think he likes the fact that men make passes at me- I think you should ask him that. But to me, we just joke about it.

Aren’t you due for another baby because your boy is two years old now(laughs)

Yes, I want to have another one by the special grace of God.

So what are you waiting for?

It’s God that gives and I know he’ll do it very soon.

Does your ex husband still bother you?

No, he doesn’t

Did he let you be just like that?

Of course.

Has he moved on like you?

I don’t know anything about him.

Both of you don’t care?

Why would I care? I’m married now and I care only about my husband and my kids.

Are you not bothered about the negative gist in town concerning it?

I don’t have any business with him again. That’s my past. My husband and my children are my present and future.

Divorce cases are many now. How do you hope to remain married again?

It’s not me and I don’t have the power to keep my home. All I’m determined to do is my best in the relationship. What I’ve done as a woman is to take my marriage to God because the divorce cases are scary. It’s everywhere. Ladies of nowadays are independent and don’t care about marriage.

In the past, single mothers used to lie about their status but today, ladies flaunt it, the world is changing. I’m going to sound a bit spiritual here- the devil is against marriage because it was instituted by God. And anything that has been done by God, he wants to make sure he pulls it down.

Marriage is meant to be sacred but it is no longer like that anymore. A lot of things have changed, even men don’t care what broken home can do to their kids. I feel our spiritual leaders should address it and make people start thinking of the vision God had about marriage.

I’ve been a victim of divorce once and I know what my daughter went through because I had an issue from that marriage. I don’t want to see any of my children go through that again, and that’s why I’ve taken my marriage to God.

So what were those mistakes you made in the last one that you wouldn’t want to repeat in this one?

It’s not like I’m trying to sound holy but, I didn’t make any mistake. I just feel it was meant to be like that. I had a mother-in-law who didn’t like where I come from. She didn’t like the fact that her son didn’t marry a lady from their village. She made me go through hell. At a point when I couldn’t take it any more, I left the marriage.

So you wouldn’t blame those ladies who wish their mother-in-laws were dead before they got married?

I swear I wouldn’t blame them. If I think back to what I went through, I wouldn’t pray for anyone to go through such because I went through hell in the hands of that woman. And for me to have woken up one day and decided to leave, it wasn’t easy because I was young and tried my best to please her. But she wasn’t pleased. I went out of my way to learn their language, learn how to cook different dishes just to please her but she didn’t budge.

So what did your ex-husband do about it?

At first, he actually fought it but some women have a strong hold on their sons. In the end, he obeyed her. He didn’t like it that I was leaving but he couldn’t hold me back at the same time because he wanted to please his mum. We had fought the battle for a long time and it wasn’t as if it would come to an end, I had to leave.

Have you ever been broke in your entire adult life so far?

Of course, I had when I left my job for acting. But it wasn’t as if it was that bad because before I left my job, I already made a provision. I had a cosmetic and fashion accessories shop. I knew I would face financial challenges as an upcoming actress. It wasn’t that bad, I ‘ve just been blessed.

Taraba State Governor, Danbaba Suntai ,who was recently involved in a plane crash precisely on October 25 in Yola, the capital of Adamawa state is said to have suffered a severe brain damage that makes it hard to recognize people. He failed to recognize the presidential delegation that visited him in the hospital in Hanover, Germany.

Sources said his condition is so bad that they could not publicly disclose his condition after they returned to Nigeria.

A Taraba-born political activist based in Abuja said he also heard about the visit to the ailing Governor by Senate President Mark’s delegation. He wondered if Mr Mark’s silence on Governor Suntai’s health signaled a scheme by President Jonathan to delay the swearing in of the deputy governor as the substantive governor.

He recalled Yar’Adua’s case of deception. How people continued to deceive Nigerian that he was recovering well.

The activist stated that the Presidency should state the truth about the injured governor’s condition to enable the people of Taraba to move ahead with a new administration. “The fact that the people of Taraba have not heard from or seen the governor since the air crash on October 25 2012 means that the man is no longer fit to govern them,” he said.

Obasanjo calls for revolution

During a recent conference on youth employment in Dakar, Senegal, former President Olusegun Obasanjo shocked his audience by openly calling for a revolution in Nigeria. Also, it will be recalled that the former President called Nigerians to come out en masse for a Nigerian type “Arab spring (revolution)” during a workshop on economic diversification and revenue generation in December 2011 at the June 12 Cultural Centre in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Obasanjo’s call was hinged on the prevailing high rate of youth unemployment, which he estimated to be about 72 per cent. If the audience in Dakar was shocked, then the residents of Warri in Delta State were utterly astonished when he commented on President Goodluck Jonathan’s handling of the crisis in the North.
Most Nigerians are unable to understand why and how a former President could incite the people to the path of revolution as a measure to check unemployment.
They become jittery when such comments come from a retired Army general of the calibre and stature of Obasanjo. His insistence on a revolution has become an unpalatable cliché that Nigerians must decipher.
Obasanjo’s statements are more unsettling because he has unrestrained access to Aso Rock to advise and even brief Jonathan on such issues relating to national security.
Also, he has the opportunity to meet Jonathan one-on-one during their monthly National Council of State meetings in Aso Rock. And so why does the former President rage and attempt to pull down what he has helped in building?
Like all human beings, the former President has his own shortcomings. The most prominent of these is his pay-back mentality for any request scorned or denied.
He believes so much in the myth that he is a superhero. As Nigeria’s patron saint, he believes that he is the best President this country ever had.
Today, Obasanjo’s call for a Nigerian type Arab Spring has revealed his short-sightedness.
The Arab Spring or Arab Uprising started in Tunisia on December 18, 2010 when a Tunisian unemployed graduate Mohamed Bouazizi set himself ablaze to protest police corruption and brutality.
The ensuing protest spread throughout Tunisia with increased violence. The result was that the then Tunisian President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali was forced to flee to Saudi Arabia on January 14, 2011.
The protests spread through North Africa and the Gulf States engulfing Egypt, Algeria, Libya, Yemen, Bahrain and Syria. Echoes of the Arab Spring resounded in Jordan, Kuwait, Morocco, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Djibouti, et cetera.
Today the dregs of the Arab Spring are yet to settle. President Hosni Mubarak was forced to flee on February 11, 2011. And till date, Egypt does not have a stable government as Tahrir Square has become a symbol of the peoples’ solidarity.
Even with the democratic election of President Mohammed Morsy of the Moslem Brotherhood, Egypt is as unstable as an ancient blackboard standing on three legs, with the hind leg broken off.
Obasanjo’s call for a revolution because of youth unemployment is misplaced. People like him should not pray for a revolution, not even for their children because revolutions are cataclysmic, destructive and unpredictable. The no-nonsense former President needs some tutorial on revolutions.
In his recent role as the moderator for Bishop Ayo Oritsejafor’s 40th anniversary on the pulpit, he lambasted President Goodluck Jonathan’s weak response to the Boko Haram crisis.
Obasanjo flaunted his genocidal and criminal demolition of Odi in Bayelsa State, where unidentified militants killed 19 soldiers. Some day, he will appear at the War Crime Tribunal at the Hague to answer for heinous crimes against the residents of Odi.
The former President speaks of unemployment, but he has forgotten that he laid a solid foundation for this by wasting $16bn on electricity generation without any impact on Nigeria’s electricity generation and distribution.
At the time he handed over to the late Umaru Yar’Adua, Nigeria’s electricity megawatts was a paltry 2000 for a population of 140 million people while South Africa boasts 50,0000 megawatts for its 45million people.
Industries started folding up and relocating to Ghana during Obasanjo’s government with hundreds of thousands of workers thrown into the unemployment market. He built a personal library in Abeokuta worth N7bn and coerced Nigeria’s richest businessmen, some of who are his business partners, to bank-roll the project which he cunningly named the Presidential Library Project.
What more can we mention now? Is it the pauperisation of Nigerians due to the increase in the price of commodity items like rice, sugar, cement, flour and noodles, which were licensed to only one man to import, or the quarterly increase in the price of petroleum products?
God save Nigeria

Mohammed Ludovic Lütfi Zahed, an Algerian Muslim living in Paris is planning to open a ‘mosque for gays’ in France and hopes to eventually conduct same-sex Muslim marriages.

According to reports, Zahed, a homosexual man is married to his gay partner and hopes to open the doors by the end of the month. He also plans to break another Islamic taboo by refusing to segregate women and men.

Zahed says the mosque, in a Buddhist chapel in Paris, will be very different from the conventional mosque. “In normal mosques, women have to sit in the back seats and wear a headscarf and gay men are afraid of both verbal and physical aggression. After performing the Hajj, I realized that a mosque for gays was a must for gay Muslims who want to perform their prayers.”

Zahed is married to Qiyam al-Din, a South African man. Zahed diagnosed with AIDS at 19, became very spiritual but reveals he regularly receives hate mail from Muslims globally, but added he is ‘comfortable’ in his own skin The pair married in South Africa where same-sex marriage is legal, and their marriage was approved by an imam in France, but was not recognised by the previous government as the French are bitterly divided on gay marriages.

Reports that the French President Francois Hollande plans to enact his ‘marriage for everyone plan’ within a year of coming to power in May is circulation but vocal opposition from religious leaders, some politicians and parts of rural France has sparked protests with an estimated 70,000 marchers.

Riot police used tear gas to break up violence between those who support and oppose the change in law.

As well as opposition from those against gay marriage, the couple will likely face persecution from the French Muslim community. Homosexuality is a religious, political and cultural flashpoint among much of the Arab and Islamic world.

Zahed told Al Arabiya News: ‘Being married in front of my family, was like a new start of life for me.

‘I could have never imagined such a day would come, seeing the joy in my parents’ eyes after they had battled with my sexuality and tried with all their might to change the course of my sexual orientation.’

He added that if his marriage is not recognised in France he will return to South Africa

Used Cóndoms in the past is something that none pays attention to, but shockingly it has now become one thing no one wants to drop carelessly especially patrons of “runs” babes in the Federal Capital Territory because of the huge financial prices.

Information has it that herbalists now buy it from most call girls and runs babe

Already most patrons now pick their used cóndoms from próstitutes, and dispose it themselves so as not to get their spérm that is stocked in the cóndom in the hands of herbalists.

According to those who should know, many young girls who are now involved in the próstitution business are now willing to go out with men at any cost unlike in the past. They don’t haggle prices with customers because they make fast cash from the sale of the spérm of all customers that they sleep with.

According to some of the young próstitutes, some herbalists do come along from 4:30 am each morning to collect and pay cash for used cóndoms.

Last month and early this month, men of the Abuja Task Force arrested over 1400 próstitutes out of which over 80 percent were caught with used coódoms filled with spérm which shocked the Task Force personnel thereby giving credence to the booming trade involvement of the most call girls in the sordid act of selling spérm for money

Already the business is now a booming one as the girls are in haste to sleep with anyone so far they can be handy with the cóndoms from such entanglement, thereby earning some thousands of naira in cash as proceeds from their spérm sales.

While none of the young girls arrested and spoken to can give any accurate or clear cut reasons why and what the buyers are using the spérm for, some herbal practitioners confirm it is a ready-made tool for some herbal charm.

T was a sad story of love gone sour. Indeed it came as a big shock to residents of No. 8 Eze Street, off Okposi Street, Nkaliki, Abakaliki when they woke up to discover that their neighbour, Mr. Yaune Okorji, an Assistant Immigration Officer attached to Ebonyi State headquarters of the command, had lost his life because of a marital squabble which had lasted for quite some time.

Vanguard Metro, VM, gathered that the deceased and his embittered wife, Mrs. Judith Okorji have been having serious marital crisis, leading to accusation and counter-accusation over issues bordering on infidelity and that several attempts made by senior immigration officers to reconcile them yielded little or no success.

The quarrel reached a tragic climax on the fateful day when the deceased accused his wife of sleeping with another man in a hotel. According to sources, the immigration officer who hailed from Ahoada in Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State, the same community with his wife, was stabbed to death around 1:00am after a fight with Judith got out of hand.

An eye witness who did not want her name mentioned stated that when Mr. Okorji returned late to the house on the fateful day, his wife who was already angry because of the husband’s excessive consumption of alcohol started interrogating him, thereby leading to a quarrel.

She said: “It was then that the wife out of annoyance grabbed a knife very close to her and stabbed him on the upper part of his left hand and it pierced through his chest and the man fell down, with blood gushing out from the stab wound. Neighbours who were attracted to the scene by shouts for help, grabbed him and put him on a motorcycle and rushed him to the Federal Teaching Hospital. Unfortunately, he died on the way to the hospital”.

An unconfirmed source told VM that some angry relatives of Mr. Okorji had responded to the incident by burning down the residences of the suspect’s (Mrs. Okorji) relatives in River State. Consequently, serious tension is said to be building up in the hometown of the couple.

Confirming the incident, the Ebonyi State Police Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police, DSP Sylvester Igbo, told newsmen that Mrs. Judith Okorji, the 24-year-old accused, had been arrested by the command for allegedly stabbing her husband to death after a quarrel bordering on infidelity.

The incident, since it occurred last Sunday, have generated lots of insinuations as bewildered neighbours in the area were seen discussing the matter in small groups.

Igbo said: “When the matter was reported, the police went to the scene and she was arrested. In the course of the investigation, she made confessional statement to the police. The Police discovered that she used the dagger belonging to the husband to stab him when they were quarreling.

It was alleged that the woman was accused of infidelity by the husband. The deceased was a staff of Immigration here in the state from Ahoda East in River State. They were living as husband and wife before the incident”.

According to him, investigation so far conducted by the police on the matter indicated that the accused, a nursing mother, who already had three children for the man, might have been provoked to carry out the act after the husband accused her of infidelity.

The Police spokesman revealed that the accused, who is a law student of the Nigeria Open University, had admitted to committing the crime but blamed it on the devil.

VM gathered that Judith who was in police custody, was later charged to court and remanded in prison custody for further investigation as the body of the deceased had been deposited at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, FETHA, for autopsy.

Also, the children of the deceased are said to be in custody of one Mrs. Eddy, a friend to the accused, for their up keep following the unfortunate episode.
