Man (Christopher Franklin Weaver) Robs Bank 55 Minutes After He Was Released From Prison

A man could very well have set a record for the shortest stretch of time between lockups, requiring a mere 55 minutes to land himself back in jail after being released.

Christopher Franklin Weaver, 33, walked out of Lane County Jail as one of 32 recently released inmates, walked about a mile or so and allegedly promptly robbed a bank, police in Eugene, Ore., said.

He was caught by authorities at the Pacific Continental Bank and returned to Lane County Jail. Nobody was injured during the alleged robbery.

“This is pretty fast, someone getting released at 11:00 and then they arrive back 55 minutes later,” Sgt. Carrie Carver of the Lane County Sheriff’s Office told ABC News.  ”I can’t say it’s the shortest time, but it’s certainly the most notable because of the nature of the crime.”

Law enforcement in Lane County was forced to release 32 inmates, including Weaver, in order to balance the budget for the year, Carver said.

The released inmates were imprisoned on charges ranging from assault and sex abuse to drug possession and drunk driving. Weaver was incarcerated for parole violations for sex abuse and for unlawful use of a vehicle.

Officials at the Lane County Sheriff’s Office could not confirm whether or not Weaver, who now faces federal bank robbery charges, has been assigned an attorney.

Magistrate Judge Tom Coffin ruled Weaver a flight risk at his initial hearing in US District Court and he will be locked up for “as long as the feds pay for that bed,” Carver said.

Delta state closes camps for flood victims

Nigeria’s Delta state government has closed all camps opened to cater for the recent flood-ravaged victims in the state, Dr Tony Nwaka, the Commissioner for Special Duties, said.

Nwaka told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Asaba that the closure which started on 30 October was concluded on Friday, with the ones at Ogbe-Ijoh in Warri South West.

Twenty two camps were set up by the state government for the internally displaced persons in the 14 Local Government Areas affected by flooding.

The government had announced the provision of N174 million as allowance, comprising N5,000 to every adult and N3,000 to every child, willing to leave the camp.

The measure was informed by the fact the many of the victims had started leaving to participate in the farming season.

“The remaining camp, out of the two in Ogbe-Ijoh, was closed on Friday, and that was the last camp to be closed in the state. With that, we have officially closed all camps of all persons displaced by flood in the state”, Nwaka said.

He, however, said that relief materials donated for the victims would soon be distributed to them.

Meanwhile, the Committee on the Management of Federal Government Funds to Delta for post-flooding rehabilitation of the victims, stated that it would soon begin distribution of farm inputs to affected farmers.

The Chairman of the committee, Retired Justice Francis Taba, said that cassava and yam seedling would be among the inputs for distribution.

Majek Fashek Vows To Return

Reggae music star, Majek Fashek, is set to resuscitate his dwindling music career with an album, Gangster Rasta. It will be released under his Underground System Records, USR, soon.

Majek, whose blossoming career has been blighted by health-related crisis, is optimistic that the forthcoming album will revive and take him back to where he belongs- the international scene. He described the album as a new ace, which will take him to the level of Michael Jackson and James Brown.

USR, Majek disclosed, is already registered in Los Angeles, California, and will also be used as a platform to nurture Nigeria’s young musicians and push them to the international market.

“We intend to register the company in Nigeria as well and use it as a platform to get the youths out of the streets and criminality. I’m an American citizen. I may decide to go back there now because my wife and children are there. But I’m here because Nigerians are suffering and there is nobody to speak for them. That is one of the revolutions that I’m here to make,” the ‘Rainmaker’ told Entertainment Cafe.

He added that the album release will be preceded by a music tour tagged Operation Feed the Poor, which he said is his own little way of giving back to the society.

“I’m not into materialism. The programme I’m coming up with is mainly to help the poor. But if I’m poor, I cannot help the poor, so that is the revolution I’m talking about- the rich must help the poor. That is why I’m embarking on the tour,” he explained

Wenger under scrutiny after worst Arsenal start

LONDON (AFP) – Following the poorest start to a Premier League season in his 16 years as Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger finds the wisdom behind his methods being questioned as never before.

Saturday’s 2-0 loss at home to Swansea City was Arsenal’s fourth defeat of the season, their third game without a win, and left them 10th in the table.

An afternoon that began with a fan protest against the Arsenal board ended with a chorus of boos, as Wenger stalked down the Emirates Stadium tunnel bracing himself for fresh questions about his capacity to lead the club.

Many supporters are aggrieved that Arsenal’s reluctance to invest money in new signings means the players that swept the club to glory in the first half of Wenger’s reign have not been adequately replaced.

“It is more down to shareholders and that is not my job,” Wenger said when asked about the resources at his disposal on Saturday.

“It’s difficult to answer that straight away after a game like that, but I believe the support from the board is there to spend the money if we find the players.”

Despite the supporters’ concerns, chief executive Ivan Gazidis says Arsenal’s financial stability and projected revenue growth will soon put them “in the top five clubs in the world”.

Last week, Arsenal announced a £150 million ($239 million, 185 million euros) extension of their shirt sponsorship agreement with Emirates Airlines.

The sales of star players Cesc Fabregas, Samir Nasri, Robin van Persie and Alex Song, meanwhile, have raised in the region of £90 million, but the players signed to take their places have enjoyed only qualified success.

Of the glut of players who arrived in the 2011 close-season transfer window, only Mikel Arteta and Per Mertesacker have managed to nail down first-team places, and this season’s new signings have also enjoyed mixed fortunes.

While Spanish midfielder Santi Cazorla has been a revelation, it has taken French striker Olivier Giroud time to find his feet and Lukas Podolski has shone only in fits and starts.

For all of Cazorla’s evident class, and the vast potential of youth-team graduate Jack Wilshere, there are fears that Wenger’s famed ability to spot a player may be deserting him.

Arsenal have gone seven and a half years without winning a trophy, but while they used to be able to take solace in the quality of their football, Wenger’s side are no longer the swashbuckling team of old.

They continue to enjoy more possession of the ball, on average, than any of their rivals (59.9 percent, according to the website http://www.whoscored.com), but after 15 games of the current campaign, their attack is only the seventh most potent in the division.

At the Emirates on Saturday, it was Swansea, not Arsenal, whose passing football drew gasps of admiration from British media pundits.

As Swansea coach Michael Laudrup noted: “Arsenal are still moving the ball around well, but we play that way as well.”

Wenger has at least guided Arsenal into the last 16 of the Champions League for the 13th successive season, but they have gone beyond the quarter-finals only once since losing to Barcelona in the 2006 final.

Deepening the gloom around the Emirates on Sunday morning was the news that long-serving chairman Peter Hill-Wood had been admitted to hospital after suffering a heart attack.

The 76-year-old was one of the men responsible for bringing Wenger to Arsenal in 1996, in a move that was to change the face of English football.

Sixteen years on, Wenger has established a legacy that cannot be tainted, but with the club’s rivals streaking into the distance, he is under more pressure to react than ever.

Jaji Bomb Explosion:Senior Officer investigated

e50f23de914b927d4b1df49d5d2094d8_L

The Chief of Defense Staff, Admiral Ola Ibrahim, in a statement signed by the Director of Defense Information, Colonel MM Yerima, has ordered the redeployment of the commandant, Armed Forces Command

and Staff College, Jaji, Air Vice Marshall Abdullahi Kure and Corps Commander Infantry, Jaji, Major General Mohammed Isa.
The statement said “Air Vice Marshal EE Osim is to replace Air Vice Marshal IA Kure as Commandant Armed Forces Command and Staff College (AFCSC) while Maj Gen KC Osuji will act as Corps Commander, Infantry, Jaji”.

According to the statement, their deployment was linked to “an inquiry raised by defense headquarters to unravel the circumstances that led to the bomb explosion which rocked Saint Andrew’s protestant church at the Jaji Military Command in Kaduna state last week”.

It concluded that “Air Vice Marshall Kure and Major-General Isa will be redeployed by their respective services”.

The military authorities may institute a court martial to prosecute officers charged with the responsibility of securing the Jaji cantonment before it was breached and the church bombed.

Our correspondent gathered that more officers particularly those of the Military Police and the Intelligence branch of both the Infantry Corps and the Command and Staff College have been arrested and detained.

Military sources said the authorities are principally annoyed by the fact that Isa, a tested senior officer and former GOC of 82 Division, who has had brushes with militants, would allow suicide bombers to carry out such attacks on a military church inside the cantonment.

Seven men jailed for possession of pornographic films in Kano

Seven middle aged men were yesterday sentenced to six months imprisonment by the Kano State Censorship Tribunal over possession of pornographic films and illegal sales of movie clips.

Ibrahim Rabi’u, Haruna A. Magaji, Danjummai Abdullahi, Mukhtar Umar, Jamilu Ishaq, Nura Abdullahi and Salisu Raqib were found with the obscene materials on November 27, 2012, Senior State Counsel Hussain Hassan said .

The films, he said, tend to corrupt public morals, adding that engaging in the business of illegal download and distribution of films and video works violate section 97 (1),(A) and section 99 (1) of the cinematography (licensing) censor regulation 2001 respectively, and punishable under section 112 of the same law.

When the charges were read to the convicts, they all pleaded guilty and begged the court for leniency.

The state council, therefore, applied for the destruction of the computers that were used to download the said films and for the convicts to pay compensation to the producers and the censorship board as provided under section 97 (2) of the censorship board regulation 2001.

The Presiding Judge, Justice Mukhtar Ahmad, sentenced the convicts to three months imprisonment with an option to pay a fine of 20,000 naira each.

Justice Mukhtar also granted the state counsel application and ordered the convicts to pay N200,000 naira each as compensation to the censorship board and the producers of the said films or risk six months imprisonment under section 365 of the criminal court procedure law.

The court also ordered the Censorship board to destroy the computers as also applied by the Counsel.

Winfrey Okolo(UNIBEN), has won the 2012 Miss University Nigeria (MUN) beauty pageant.

A student of the University of Benin, Winfrey Okolo, has won the 2012 Miss University Nigeria (MUN) beauty pageant.
Ms. Okolo emerged the winner by beating 48 other contestants in Abuja on Friday night.
The beauty queen received a star prize of a Nissan Sony car and one million naira.
In an interview with NAN after her installation, Ms. Okolo said that the event marked her first participation at a beauty contest, thanking God for enabling her to excel at the competition.
She, however, pledged to make good use of her position to affect the lives of Nigerian youths.
“I will try to stimulate a change in the Nigerian university system; I will endeavour to promote modesty, hard work and a lot of things that will bring out the students’ confidence,” Ms. Okolo said.
The competition was a “no-bikini pageant” that was particularly aimed at promoting the African culture and discouraging indecent dressing among the youth.
The President of MUN Organisation, Taylor Nazzal, said that he was happy to touch the lives of many young Nigerians.
“We can always inspire women out there to be better leaders of tomorrow. They are all potential wives and if you groom them well, you’ve succeeded in grooming the men and the whole world,” he said.
Mr. Nazzal said that the new beauty queen would be Nigeria’s student ambassador to the United Nations (UN), adding that she would also be engaged to carry out charity assignments.
He also noted that Ms. Okolo would represent Nigeria at the Miss University Africa pageant involving 53 countries in South Africa and the Miss United Nations pageant in New York next year.
In her remark, the Abuja Minister of State, Olajumoke Akinjide, said that the pageant was also promoting the government’s vision for the youth.
The minister, who was represented by Geoffrey Chukwuemeka, a Director in the Federal Capital Territory Administration, noted that the beauty contest also created an avenue for the contestants to exhibit their talents because it was not about beauty alone.
Ms. Akinjide said that the pageant also reinforced the Abuja administration’s goal of promoting national unity and peace.
“It also supports our plans aimed at discovering the potential of our female youth, protection of our female youth and discouragement of indecent dressing, prostitution and other social vices among young ladies,” she said.
The `non-bikini’ beauty pageant began in 2007 and its 2011 edition was won by Temitope Olowoniyan of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

Police nab four robbers for killing recharge card dealer and carting away cards

The Police command in Nassarawa State on Friday paraded four armed robbery suspects over the killing of a recharge card dealer, Abdullahi Hadi, and stealing cards worth N5 million.

The Commissioner of Police, Abayomi Akeremale, said the suspects, on November 19, trailed the victim from his shop at Masaka to his residence at Dantata Quarters in Karu, where they shot him dead.

Mr. Akeremale said the suspects carted away recharge cards worth N5 million and unspecified amount of cash.

He said detectives at the New Nyanya Police Station, acting on a tip-off, arrested the suspects while trying to sell the recharge cards to buyers, including a lady.

The police also paraded one Abdullazeez Adam, suspected to be a notorious car snatcher.

The commissioner told newsmen that the suspect was arrested at New Nyanya while trying to remove the number plate from a stolen Honda Accord car with registration number AG 893 GKW.

He said the suspect confessed that he and an accomplice, currently at large, snatched the vehicle from the victim.

He, therefore, advised the owner of the vehicle to come with relevant documents to claim it.

Mr. Akeremale assured that the suspects would be charged to court as soon as investigations were concluded.

He also urged members of the public to be vigilant, especially during the festive period and not hesitate to furnish the police with information that could help check crime.

Flash: In Stable Condition, Lingering Cough Likely To Keep George H.W. Bush Hospitalized

Former U.S. President George H.W. Bush remains in stable condition at a Houston hospital, but a lingering cough related to bronchitis likely will keep him there through the weekend.
Methodist Hospital spokesman George Kovacik said Saturday there is no change in the status of the 88-year-old Bush from earlier in the week. But Jim McGrath, a spokesman for the 41st president, said “he still has the cough and we’re now not expecting him to be discharged this weekend.”
McGrath said doctors are “going to play it safe there for obvious reasons.”
Aides had expected his discharge soon, but McGrath said “the cough has taken longer to clear up” than anticipated.
Bush has been in and out of the hospital recently for complications resulting from bronchitis. He has been treated with antibiotics and steroids, and this marks Bush’s second extended hospital stay since November.
Hospital visitors have included Bush’s son, former President George W. Bush, and his wife Laura, who live in Dallas.
The former president has a form of Parkinson’s disease that has forced him to use a wheelchair or motorized scooter to get around. Bush was seen a few weeks ago attending a Houston Texans NFL game, something he does frequently.
The elder Bush was vice president under Ronald Reagan from 1980 to 1988, when he was elected president. He lost his re-election bid to Bill Clinton four years later.
Bush and his wife, Barbara, now make their winter home in Houston and spend summers in Kennebunkport, Maine.
The former president was a naval aviator in World War II — at one point the youngest in the Navy — and was shot down over the Pacific. He achieved notoriety in retirement for skydiving on at least three of his birthdays since leaving the White House in 1992.

Flash: Lagos-Ibadan Highway: ‘Julius Berger, RCC To Patch Road For Yuletide; Contract Re-awarding In Q1 2013′

Fresh indications emerged at the weekend that the federal government is yet to re-award the contract for the reconstruction of the 105-kilometre Lagos-Ibadan Expressway after the termination of the contract with Bi-Courtney Consortium.
The Minister of Works, Mr. Mike Onolememen, had while announcing the cancellation of the contract with Bi-Courtney, said the Federal Ministry of Works had engaged the services of Julius Berger Nigeria Plc and RCC Nigeria Limited to commence work immediately on the reconstruction of the expressway.  While Julius Berger will handle Section 1 from Lagos to the Shagamu Interchange; RCC Nigeria Limited will be responsible for Section II from Shagamu to Ibadan.
However, competent sources in the ministry disclosed that so far discussions between the Federal Government and the two construction companies were for a rehabilitation project to make the road mortorable for Christmas and the New Year.
“There is nothing like a reconstruction contract at the moment. Both companies are just required to make the road appear good for the yuletide season,” they said.
They explained that government is anxious to fix the road but that the contract for major work on the road would be awarded before the end of first quarter of next year.
“The federal government is determined to go through due process and an open bidding is to be conducted where equal opportunity will be given to all,” they said.
According to the sources, the management of Julius Berger and RCC are yet to sign any contract paper with the federal government on any reconstruction work although he confirmed that the two construction companies have been engaged to fix the bad portions of the road.
They said all things being equal; the two firms are to fully move to the road this week.
The concession contract which was awarded to Bi-Courtney in May 2009 was to have covered a 25-year period during which the firm would toll the road and recoup its investment under a Build-Operate-and-Transfer, BOT, in the deal worth N89.5bn.
But a combination of funding constraint on the part of the concessionaire and government’s red tape scuppered the project, with rising cases of mishaps on the road.
Bi-Courtney, which failed to get the needed funds from its bankers on time, also blamed the delay in the project’s execution on a corresponding delay by government in the approval of the design for the construction of the 105-km road.
The design was approved just last year May (two years after the contract signing), the company claimed, a condition that had to be met before construction work could commence proper.
Economic watchers had wondered how the federal government would go about the re-award of the project given the fact that the project was not captured in the 2013 budget.
Other questions raised included whether or not the new contractors would rely on the project design submitted by Bi-Courtney.
