Mysterious fire, yesterday, gutted the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Abakaliki, destroying broadcast equipment and furniture worth millions of naira.

The fire, which started from the studio section of the complex at about 9pm while the station was on air, quickly spread to other sections and immediately yanked the station off air.

Many residents who were viewing the station at the time it went off air later told newsmen that they were alarmed over the manner the station tripped off stressing that they became suspicious that something was wrong.

A distress call was reportedly put across to the Ebonyi State Fire Service office located about eight kilometers away but no sooner did they arrive with a fire truck, said to be half filled with water, than they ran out of water and had to run back to station to refill while the devastation by the raging inferno continued.

On their arrival nearly 45 minutes later, the entire studio had been consumed just as it took the firemen another grueling 30 minutes to quench the fire.

Sources close to the station attributed the cause of the fire to electrical sparks in the studio.

Equipment said to have been destroyed include: video cameras, three monitors, microphones, props, underground cables and studio lights.

Uti Nwachukwu Dumps Alex Ekubo For Beverly Naya?

For those very conversant with events in Lagos, especially the ones related to entertainment bloc, Uti Nwachukwu and Alex Ekubo are pairs that always move around together.

Uti Nwachukwu Dumps Alex Ekubo For Beverly Naya?uti
The former Big Brother Africa winner has unconsciously taken former Mr Nigeria 2011, Alex Ukibo just like a handbag. Rarely would you see Uti at any event without sighting Alex beside him.

This has raised some eyebrows among some people in the industry in the past about the two handsome young men.

At an event in Lagos last Saturday, June 2, it was a big surprise and disappointment when Uti sighting with another person different from the usual, Alex.

This time, It was Nollywood up and coming actress, Beverly Naya that was spotted with the Delta State-born handsome model, actor and singer; Uti.

They both breezed into the event venue in an black SUV. Beverly was sitting in front while Uti drove.

They both posed for photographs. Beverly was seen being reluctant to be separated from Uti even when some photo-journalists wanted personal pictures of Uti. At almost interviews on Uti at the event, Beverly was seen around him.

What we don’t know of is if Uti has finally dumped Alex for Beverly or Beverly is just standing in for Alex who might bounce back to take his rightful position. Fingers crossed.

How to recognise your life partner

The question that always seems to get asked in relationship forums is this: Do Black men/women know what they want? It’s funny, most black men say that black women don’t and many black women argue back, “No, it’s y’all who don’t know what you want!”

happy-black-couple1-378x3502
I remember some years back, I talked with a successful Black man who had been a long time friend of mine. He had the great job, he owned his home, he was involved in church, he offered to pay for the meal (and we were just friends). Without fail, our catching up would invariably lead to a discussion about our dating lives. I often left our discussions puzzled however that he would list the qualities he was looking for in a woman and would ask me my opinion about things yet didn’t seem to notice that I had every single quality he was looking for.

So what’s up with that? Why is it that the people we complain to are the very ones who have what we say we are looking for but more-times-than-not we don’t see it?

I have a theory. Okay, here it is: It’s because we don’t know how to recognize it. That’s my theory. Our brains are hardwired because of our experiences in life and how we were raised or not raised to be. Have you ever talked with a girlfriend who said, “I like bad boys!” Yet, she spends all of her time trying to make him into a good boy and bellyaches that he won’t treat her with respect, care or consideration. Hello? Bad boy?

In April 2011, I posted a blog entitled “You Can’t Help Who You’re Attracted To. Oh Really?.” There, I challenged the belief that we are victims of attraction, doomed to unrequieted and unreciprocated affections. We aren’t. I’ll say it again, a little louder this time: WE AREN’T. We are not victims. We are ill-informed. We are misguided. We are a tad insane. But we are not victims. I believe that with the right information and a willingness to learn, we can retrain ourselves to be attracted to kind, warm, genuine, AVAILABLE people.

There is a difference between euphoria and anxiety. Euphoria is when our brains are saturated with pleasure hormones. We walk around in a drugged happy excited state. That’s normal in the early stages of meeting someone and initial dating. But this tossing and turning, I can’t eat, I can’t sleep, muddle-brainedness is not euphoria. It’s called anxiety. Waiting by the phone to see if he or she will call or adjusting the volume over and over again to make sure you don’t miss a call is not euphoric. It’s called compulsion. It’s anxious. It’s awful!

Merriam Webster defines compulsion this way. It’s an irresistible persistent impulse to perform an act. The Free Dictionary adds, “…regardless of the rationality of the motivation.” Compulsion has an irrational component as well as a psychiatric component. Don’t worry, you aren’t ready for the paddy wagon just yet though. Usually, compulsions can be dissuaded if the root of the anxiety is addressed. This is why dating online for me was so therapeutic. Knowing that there were thousands of men out there to choose from, one man not returning my calls was of no consequence. As the saying goes, “there are plenty of fish in the sea.”

The first step is knowing what you want in a partner, this is true. In an earlier article submission to Black Life Coaches, “Hold Your Standards and Don’t Settle For Less,” I clarified how preference differs from having a standard.

The second step is just as important: recognizing it when he or she shows up. To demonstrate this further, let’s revisit the bad boy attraction. When you peel this banana back, the allure is his confidence and his swagger. He seems to be in command of things and that is very attractive to most women. I get it and I ain’t mad at you. Being with a man whom we feel can take care of things is a legitimate standard. Some, like President Obama, wear it for all to see. Others don’t. Understanding this, I invite you to broaden your perception. There are also good men out there who have just as much command of things, but they are not as overt with it. You’ll have to be more discerning. As you observe him–not what he’s wearing, not what he looks like, not what he owns–you’ll notice it in how honorably he handles your feelings. In his consistent “show up” attitude. In how he puts your needs above his own convenience.

12 proven principles of getting rich, and anyone can use them

by Jesse Ford for Reach For Happy

There are laws that govern the process of getting rich and when applied by any one, the person is bound to become rich. The reality is that anyone who practices these principles knowingly or unknowingly becomes rich

n 1910, a man named Wallace Wattles published a book titled The Science of Getting Rich. He claimed that anyone who followed the process laid out in the book was bound to become rich with mathematical certainty. It turns out that since its publication and up until today, men and women have used the processes he laid out to become very rich. The processes in his book are summarized and outlined here in modern day English.

Anyone can follow the processes and become rich because getting rich is as a result of doing things in a CERTAIN WAY – like causes always produce like effects. Anyone with an imagination and some discipline follow the processes. These principles work regardless of your current financial status, profession, business, career, or geographic location.

Ofcourse you will naturally do better in a business or profession that is in alignment with your personality. A good personality test will reveal which environment suits you best, your primary motivations, and what career suits your personality best. It will also provide a guide how you should direct your energies. To fast-track your progress by understanding what suits you best, you should start of by taking this personality test which is one of the best available, and create an alignment between your efforts and your energies. Principles from The Science of Getting Rich

Principle 1 – Create the Mental Image and Hold On To It
The force that created the earth is still working today. Creation is happening as you read this and thought is the only power that can produce tangible riches. Everything you see is a product of thought. Therefore you should create a picture of the things you desire. Thougt in the creative plane produces the thing that is held in that thought.

A person has the power to create the things he or she thinks about in a sustained and consistent way. Regardless of your current financial circumstances, in your mind you need to create a picture of what you desire. Create the thought in your mind and hold on to it. You will notice that to think of your current reality and financial situation is easy and does not require much effort, however the power and secret lies in your ability to create the image you desire and hold on to it in your mind and hold onto it as truth.

A person who can think in a sustained and consecutive way of riches when in poverty and surrounded by poverty or the appearance of it, becomes a master mind. It is the first principle to practice to become rich. Thankfully there are processes and tools that can help. There are advanced visualization techniques available today that help to manifest your desires easier, faster, and effortlessly. Essentially you create motivational, customized movies of your mental images and it changes your entire life by your devoting just a few minutes a day. To create your customized movies of your mental images click here.

Hold the mental image of what you desire with positive certainty that it is being made and it is on its way to you.

Principle 2 – Know That It Is Your Right to Be Rich
Understand and accept that it is the will of the Creator for you to be rich. You do not serve God or humanity by being in lack of any kind. For these principles to work for you, you must understand and fully accept that it is God’s will for you to be rich.

Wealth and riches are created with these principles in the creative plane and not in the competitive plane, therefore rid your mind of the idea that you can only become rich when the universe takes from someone else and gives it to you; or that you have to cheat or defraud others. When you follow these principles, you move to the creative plane, do not therefore think that supplies are limited. Cultivate an abundance mentality.

The Creator of the Universe is still creating today. Your creative power stays at work when you keep your mind and thoughts on the creative plane or else you enter into the competitive plane and halt your power to create. Never ever limit your thinking to the things that already exist, but understand and accept that what you desire and which you are holding in your mind in mental images is being created for you.

Principle 3 – Deliver Value
Operating in the creative plane means that as you engage in business dealings with others you should adopt a service culture where you are serving humanity. In business give to everyone more in use value than you take from them in cash value. Ensure that you deliver value to people; whether you are in business for yourself or you are in paid employment.

This means that you do not sell products or services for the sake of it, but rather you ensure that you are giving people use value. This applies regardless of your career; business, employment, etc.

Funke Akindele’s Hubby, Almaroof Welcomes 6th Child From 2nd Wife

Going by report reaching Nigeriafilms.com, Fadekemi, the second wife of Almaroof Oloyede, who is the husband of top Nollywood actress, Funke Akindele, has been delivered of a baby boy.
image-2-232x300
Aproko247 reported that Fadekemi gave birth to the child some days ago and the father is over excited about the arrival of the new born baby to the family at this festive period. The mother and child were also reported to be in a stable condition.

Earlier in the year, it was reported by a popular Lagos soft-sell magazine, E247 that Almaroof was expecting a sixth child from Fadekemi, who was then reported to have been devastated by the news of her hubby planning to get married to Funke at that time.

She was reportedly advised to leave the country for Dubai or London in order to save herself from the trauma of seeing her husband getting married to another woman while she was still pregnant at that time.

A family source close to Almaroof told Nigeriafilms.com that the story is true and confirmed that the child was given birth to around November.

Pope slams Boko Haram, urges end to killings in Nigeria

Pope Benedict XVI on Tuesday lamented “savage acts of terrorism” that frequently target Christian churches in Nigeria, during his traditional Christmas message.

pope_B_1810418c1-300x187
The pontiff prayed for “concord in Nigeria, where savage acts of terrorism continue to reap victims, particularly among Christians.”

The Islamist extremist group Boko Haram has often targeted churches in its bloody insurgency, as well as police and other symbols of the establishment in Nigeria. Violence linked to the insurgency is believed to have left some 3,000 people dead since 2009, including killings by the security forces.

The violence is now worsened with the emergence of another terror group, the Ansaru, that claimed to have kidnapped French engineer, Frances Colump, in Rimi Katsina, Katsina State last week.

Pope Benedict also called for an “end to the bloodshed” and “a political solution” in conflict-wracked Syria in a traditional Christmas message that touched on several other of the world’s conflict zones.

“There is hope in the world … even at the most difficult times and in the most difficult situations,” he said, praying that “peace spring up for the people of Syria, deeply wounded and divided by a conflict which does not spare even the defenceless and reaps innocent victims,” the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

More than 44,000 people have been killed in Syria since the outbreak in March 2011 of an anti-regime revolt that became a bloody insurgency after a brutal crackdown, a rights group said last week.

The pope’s wide-ranging “Urbi et Orbi” (To the City and the World) message, heard by some 40,000 pilgrims in St Peter’s Square, also pointed to hotspots across Africa and urged religious freedom in China, and as usual called for peace in the Middle East.

The pope prayed for “Israelis and Palestinians (to be granted the) courage to end long years of conflict and division, and to embark resolutely on the path of negotiation.”

The pope also prayed for “help and comfort to the refugees from the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo,” where a rebel campaign caused tens of thousands to flee their homes, and peace in Kenya, “where brutal attacks have struck the civilian population and places of worship”.

He also urged peace in Mali, where Islamist insurgents have occupied large swathes of the desert north since a March coup.

Turning to China, the German pope called on the new leadership to “esteem the contributions of the religions.”

Speaking of “the high task that awaits them,” the pontiff said he hoped the new leaders unveiled in November would “help build a fraternal society for that noble people and of the whole world.”

China and the Vatican severed diplomatic ties in 1951 after the latter recognised the Nationalist Chinese government in Taipei, a rival to the communist regime in Beijing.

Although Beijing and the Vatican have improved relations in recent years as China’s Catholic population has grown, they remain at odds over which side has the authority to ordain priests.

About 5.7 million Chinese belong to the state-run Catholic church, according to official figures. Independent estimates say 12 million Chinese Catholics worship in unauthorised churches and are loyal to the pope.

Man rams car into students, injures 13

BEIJING (AFP) – A man in northern China has driven a car carrying a gas canister and firecrackers into a crowd of schoolchildren, injuring 13, state media reported Tuesday.

It follows a wave of recent attacks on children in China, which have prompted authorities to increase security around schools and led to calls for research into the root causes of such violence.

In the latest attack on Monday, the man drove into a crowd of students in Hebei province, the official Xinhua news agency said, citing local police.

The report did not say how old the victims were, though the students at the school they attended would range in age from 11 to 18.

The man was identified as 48-year-old Yin Tiejun, who was described as divorced and without a stable job.

According to police, Yin set fire to a bottle of diesel in an attempt to burn the car after hitting the students. Police officers extinguished the fire and discovered the gas cannister and firecrackers in the boot of the car.

Yin, however, during questioning denied that they were for an attack. He was detained Tuesday on charges of endangering public safety.

The man’s daughter was murdered three years ago, Xinhua said, adding he was upset with a court decision that did not sentence all the murderers to death.

Most of the students had minor injuries, but one suffered from a fractured skull, the foot bones of another were crushed and a third had broken blood vessels in his eyeballs, the report said, quoting local officials.

Lagos State Government demolish N100million PFMI church

There was uproar at Afero village on Lekki-Epe Expressway, Lagos, as officials of the Lagos State Government demolished a sprawling church, the Pure Fire Miracles Ministries International (PFMI) in a controversial manner.

Lagos Task Force men, accompanied by officials from the Ministry for Physical Planning and Urban Development (MPPUD), stormed the church to enforce an eviction ordered by the government.

The ministry demolished the building over allegation that there was no approval for the construction of the building.

jk

The church structures, which officials of the church said had gulped over N100 million, were erected on a 10-acre land and comprised six auditoriums, offices, residential buildings and buildings for other uses.

The church was having its annual convention with worshippers from 12 foreign countries in attendant. The more than 10,000 worshippers that included old and pregnant women, children and men, were said to a have been at a loss on why the building was demolished when the church was holding its convention.

The bulldozers from the taskforce moved in immediately and three of the buildings were brought down before the traditional ruler of Epe, Oba Kamorudeen Ishola Animashaun, Chairman of Epe Local Government and other prominent citizens in the community intervened to stop the exercise.
Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr. Toyin Ayinde, alleged that there was no approval for the church building and that notices had been served on the church to vacate the land, claiming that the land fell within the proposed Lekki International Airport and, therefore, could not have been approved for such development.

“We have served them quit notices since 2011 and another one was served on them in November, which they didn’t comply with, said Ayinde, adding that the church officials were being economical with truth.

The church disputed the claims by government that it had no approval, while a document from the legal adviser to the church’s pastor, Enoch Idowu Aminu, Messrs Ibrahim A. Shittu and Co., of Probono Chamber, showed that the land was purchased from Ikujenya Okanlawon Ikuforiji Chieftaincy Family, with the address at 3, Ikujenya Street, Bado Oke, Epe, Lagos State, on 21 May, 2010.

The purchase, according to the cleric, was embarked upon as a result of the information contained in the Lagos State of Nigeria Official Gazette, No. 29, Volume No 27, September 1, 1994.
In page 274 of the gazette, it has as follows: Description- Afero Village: “All that parcel of land in Afero in Eti-Osa Local Government of Lagos State of Nigeria containing approximately area of 28.52 hectares, the boundaries of which are described below,” stated the bearings, length of metres and the co-ordinate measurements, among others, indicated that the land was excised and properly belonged to the original owner(s).
“Besides, we applied for regularisation of land title through Law Title International, the appointed Consultant to the Lagos State Government on Land Regularisation, on which there was no objection.
This was confirmed in the official receipt of payment, dated 23 November, 2011, in the sum of N1.64 million. The church claimed that the government lied by saying that the property fell within the proposed airport as other buildings in the same vicinity were not demolished.

Reacting to the demolition, the worshippers found it disheartening that the demolition was executed amid threats and intimidations by government officials
Pastors Johnson Samuel Ani from Burkina Faso, Tamomo Jose, from Benin Republic, David Amevoi from Ghana, Richmondson Shekesesay, from Sierra Leone, Mawu from Manuzikpi, Togo, all felt that the manner of the demolition was not properly handled.

Ten years old Camerounian girl, Miracle Bosco, was shocked when the building was pulled down, saying, “why is it that police came and destroy the house of God? I am sad because all the money our parents spent here has become a waste. Please, help us to beg the Governor to stop this demolition. God is not happy and I am not happy.”

Chief Isaac Shigbata, a Nigerian born pastor, residing, denounced the manner at which security agents invaded the church without any consideration for the safety of the people.
“What happened on that fateful day was not of any credit to any government. Laws were made for man and not the other way round. No matter what may be the situation, the timing was not only bad, but rather, the action was capable of breaching security. And not at this time that Nigeria, as a country is battling religious extremism in some parts of the country’. According to Pastor David Bangali from Liberia, “Nigeria is a country that many African countries are looking unto for guidance, especially, Lagos State. But activities of security agents last week was not palatable at all.”

It is difficult to believe that Elisany da Cruz Silva, is just 17, and she holds the record of the world’s tallest teen girl at 6ft 8in.
Elisany-da-Cruz-Silva

But if you think that will make the boys feel intimidated by her height you got it wrong because Elisany is in a relationship with Francinaldo da Silva Carvalho, 22, who stands at 5ft 4in.

And such love comes with a high price – he has to practically stand on his toes and crane his neck to get a kiss.

The construction worker said: “My friends say things like, ‘How do you hug her?’. I say, ‘There’s a way of doing everything’.”

Elisany, an aspiring model from Salinopolis, Brazil, is just an inch taller than Stoke City’s Peter Crouch — she has a form of gigantism due to a tumour on her pituitary gland.

She grew faster than her seven siblings from the age of 11 and hit 6ft 9in when she was 14. But her sudden growth caused pain in her limbs and joints.

Surgeons removed the gland two years ago and she shrank by an inch — but she could still not fit on the school bus and had to quit school due to teasing.

But she’s happy now with Francinaldo. She said: “What really attracted me was his personality, the way he acts with people and the way he acts with me.

“The only thing that really affects us is when we hang out holding hands — it seems like he is my little brother or son.”

Half-naked women protest in Ogun

women-protestin-300x211

Several aged women in Sonde-Apon, a rural community in Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State at the weekend stripped themselves almost nude to protest the continued invasion of the community by hoodlums.

According to the aggrieved women, residents of the community can no longer be silent in the face of the evil being perpetrated by these hoodlums. They claimed that they are often attacked, and the most recent one is the third in a row.

The women marched through the streets of the community, chanting emotive songs and sometimes raining expletives on people they accused of turning the community into a dreaded place for its inhabitants.

They accused a certain land speculator, whose name could not be ascertained at the time of this report, of sponsoring the hoodlums in a bid to take over a substantial part of the community.

According to reports, whenever the youths, who are always armed, invade the community, they end up inflicting injuries on some of the residents and even raping some of the women.

The latest of the attack was perpetrated by about 20 hoodlums, who invaded the community with machetes and guns while most of the residents had gone to work.

“They carried out serious havoc, injured some of the few people who were around when they stormed our community.

“They carted away belongings of residents. Some women were raped even though they would not want to make issues out of it because of the shame it will bring,” one of the residents narrated.

A female community leader, Chief (Mrs.) Mopelola Losede, Iyalaje of Sonde Apon, who joined the protesters, lamented that when they first came, they attacked the people of the area.

“We petitioned the Inspector General of Police for actions to be taken against them and nothing was done. Now they are at it again. How long should we continue to live in fear because of people who are fighting to take our land by force?? She asked.

She appealed to Governor of the state, Senator Ibikunle Amosun and the IGP, Muhammed Abubakar to come to their aid before they were all wiped out.

TOP YORUBA ACTOR, AJIGIJAGA, 50+ MARRIES 26 YR-OLD LADY

image-1-300x277

When Muftua Adio a.k.a. Ajigijaga, a 53 year old actor send wedding invites to friends with the toast ‘Some say it’s too early, some say it’s too late. But to God Almighty this is the appointed time and it is marvelous in our sights’’ little the people know that he really meant business.

Why people were wondering about this holy union between the two is simply because the couple walking down the aisle -Taiwo Hassan (26) and Ajigijaga in his early 50s is many years in age apart. At the wedding that took place November 24, 2012 in Sango Ota, Lagos, people kept asking why the young girl should marry a man almost the age of her father. But beautiful Taiwo did not give a hoot about whatever any one says or thinks.

She was indifferent to the fact that her actor husband has children who are age mates. Speaking before and shortly after their celebrated marriage, Ajigijaja said,” The issue of age is nothing here. What we have in common and that is abounding is love. Though I have other children from my former wife whom I did not actually marry legally, my new wife means the whole world to me. This is my first time of getting married in life. I love her and she loves me, that is all that counts. It`s about love, not age.”

Serena Williams Impression: She Responds To Caroline Wozniacki’s Impersonation Of Her

729caroline-620x349

Several weeks ago, Caroline Wozniacki’s Serena Williams impersonation set off a firestorm of criticism. While some called the Danish athlete’s imitation “hilarious”,others didn’t find the stunt so entertaining.

As the target of the prank, Serena Williams remained silent on the matter for quite some time. But the tennis player recently spoke out in response to the controversy. In an email to USA Today, she said she saw no ill-will in Wozniacki’s impersonation.

“I know Caro and I would call her my friend,” she wrote. “And I don’t think she (meant) anything racist by it.”

Williams admitted that she hadn’t seen the viral video of Wozniacki, but said she didn’t understand why others felt that particular incident was racist as opposed to other impressions of her in the past

However, she added that Wozniacki may want to reconsider repeating the stunt if others took offense.

“I must add,” she wrote. “If people feel this way, she should take reason and do something different next time,” ending the sentence with a smiley face.

Black women’s bodies, in the game of tennis, have been a topic of controversy and discussion before. Just this year, Taylor Townsend, the top-ranking junior tennis player in the world, was under the microscope for her shape and size, after the USTA tried to deny her access to a tournament because of her weight.

Williams has admittedly referred to herself as “bootylicious”, a body classification that many women of color embrace. In the email, she said she doesn’t pay much attention to negative commentary.

At the end of the day, I spend my time focused on things to become better and not bring me down,” she wrote.

What do you think of Serena’s response? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.

US to send soldiers to tackle Boko Haram

A U.S. Army brigade will begin sending small teams into as many as 35African nations early next year, part of an intensifying Pentagon effort to train countries to battle extremists and give the U.S. a ready and trained force to dispatch to Africa if crises requiring the U.S. military emerge.

The teams will be limited to training and equipping efforts, and will not be permitted to conduct military operations without specific, additional approvals from the secretary of defense.

The sharper focus on Africa by the U.S. comes against a backdrop of widespread insurgent violence across North Africa, and as the African Union and other nations discuss military intervention in northern Mali.

The terror threat from al-Qaida linked groups in Africa has been growing steadily, particularly with the rise of the extremist Islamist sect Boko Haram in Nigeria. Officials also believe that the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, which killed the ambassador and three other Americans, may have been carried out by those who had ties to al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb.

This first-of-its-kind brigade assignment — involving teams from the 2nd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division — will target countries such as Libya, Sudan, Algeria and Niger, where al-Qaida-linked groups have been active. It also will assist nations like Kenya and Uganda that have been battling al-Shabab militants on the front lines in Somalia.

Gen. Carter Ham, the top U.S. commander in Africa, noted that the brigade has a small drone capability that could be useful in Africa. But he also acknowledged that he would need special permission to tap it for that kind of mission.

“If they want them for (military) operations, the brigade is our first sourcing solution because they’re prepared,” said Gen. David Rodriguez, the head of U.S. Army Forces Command. “But that has to go back to the secretary of defense to get an execute order.”

Already the U.S. military has plans for nearly 100 different exercises, training programs and other activities across the widely diverse continent. But the new program faces significant cultural and language challenges, as well as nagging questions about how many of the lower-level enlisted members of the brigade, based in Fort Riley, Kan., will participate, since the teams would largely be made up of more senior enlisted troops and officers. A full brigade numbers about 3,500, but the teams could range from just a few people to a company of about 200. In rare cases for certain exercises, it could be a battalion, which would number about 800.

To bridge the cultural gaps with the African militaries, the Army is reaching out across the services, the embassies and a network of professional organizations to find troops and experts that are from some of the African countries. The experts can be used during training, and the troops can both advise or travel with the teams as they begin the program.

“In a very short time frame we can only teach basic phrases,” said Col. Matthew McKenna, commander of the 162nd Infantry Brigade that will begin training the Fort Riley soldiers in March for their African deployment. “We focus on culture and the cultural impact — how it impacts the African countries’ military and their operations.”

Thomas Dempsey, a professor with the Africa Center for Strategic Studies, said the biggest challenge will be the level of cultural, language and historical diversity across the far-flung continent.

“How do you train for that in a way that would be applicable wherever they go?” said Dempsey, a retired Army colonel. He said he’s not sure using a combat brigade is the right answer, but added, “I’m not sure what the answer is. The security challenges differ so dramatically that, to be honest, I really don’t think it’s feasible to have a continental training package.”

The Pentagon’s effort in Africa, including the creation of U.S. Africa Command in 2007, has been carefully calibrated, largely due to broad misgivings across the continent that it could spawn American bases or create the perception of an undue U.S. military influence there. As a result, the command has been based in Stuttgart, Germany, rather than on the African continent.

At the same time, many African nations are eager for U.S. training or support, as they work to build their militaries, battle pirates along the coast and shut down drug trafficking, kidnapping and other insurgent activities.

McKenna acknowledged the challenge, but said the military has to tap its conventional fighting forces for this task because there aren’t enough special operations forces to meet the global training needs. He said there will be as many as a dozen different training segments between February and September, each designed to provide tailored instruction for the particular teams.

The mission for the 2nd Brigade — known as the “Dagger Brigade” — will begin in the spring and will pave the way for Army brigades to be assigned next to U.S. Pacific Command and then to U.S. European Command over the next year. The brigade is receiving its regular combat training first, and then will move on to the more specific instruction needed for the deployments, such as language skills, cultural information and other data about the African nations.

Dagger Brigade commander Col. Jeff Broadwater said the language and culture training will be different than what most soldiers have had in recent years, since they have focused on Pashtun and Farsi, languages used mostly in Afghanistan and Iran. He said he expects the soldiers to learn French, Swahili, Arabic or other languages, as well as the local cultures.

“What’s really exciting is we get to focus on a different part of the world and maintain our core combat skills,” Broadwater said, adding that the soldiers know what to expect. “You see those threats (in Africa) in the news all the time.”

The brigade will be carved up into different teams designed to meet the specific needs of each African nation. As the year goes on, the teams will travel from Fort Riley to those nations — all while trying to avoid any appearance of a large U.S. military footprint.

“The challenge we have is to always understand the system in their country,” said Rodriguez, who has been nominated to be the next head of Africa Command. “We’re not there to show them our system, we’re there to make their system work. Here is what their army looks like, and here is what we need to prepare them to do.”

Thousands flock to Bethlehem for Christmas

BETHLEHEM, Palestinian Territories (AFP) – Thousands of Palestinians and tourists streamed into the West Bank city of Bethlehem on Monday to mark Christmas in the “little town” where many believe Jesus Christ was born.

This year’s celebration carries special significance for many Palestinians, coming after 12 months in which their status on the world stage has been significantly upgraded.

Just last month, the United Nations granted them the status of non-member observer state, and earlier this year they won their first UNESCO World Heritage Site designation — for Bethlehem’s Church of the Nativity.

The designation also included part of a pilgrimage route in Bethlehem, along which the traditional Christmas procession headed by the Latin Patriarch Fuad Twal marched on Monday.

Under nearly cloudless blue skies and a surprisingly warm December sun, thousands of tourists and Palestinians — Muslims and Christians alike — lined the route to welcome the procession.

Dozens of scout troupes of boys and girls from across the West Bank drumming and playing the bagpipes marched into Manger Square, where an enormous Christmas tree decorated with hundreds of red baubles stood behind a Nativity scene.

As night fell, the tree was illuminated, a giant star shining from its top over Manger Square in front of the church built over the site where Christians believe Mary gave birth to Jesus in a stable.

Earlier, Taghreed Rishmawi, 20, a biology student from Bethlehem, said she felt Christmas was “particularly special this year because it comes after the UN gave us the state status”.

“That decision gave us hope, and we feel that the world sees us as a state now.”

At midnight, Twal, the most senior Roman Catholic bishop in the Middle East, will deliver the traditional mass to the faithful, with officials including Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas, prime minister Salam Fayyad and Jordan’s Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh expected to be in attendance.

Twal was expected to call for renewed efforts to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and urge the faithful to pray for those affected by ongoing violence in the region, particularly in Syria.

Last week, in a pre-Christmas press conference, Twal praised the UN decision to upgrade Palestinian status, calling it a “step towards peace and stability in the region”.

“Israel can now negotiate on equal state-to-state terms for the good of all,” he told reporters.

In the weeks leading up to Christmas, the Palestinians have seen Israel move forward with settlement activity, including around Bethlehem.

The Palestinians say the new settlement activity is intended to punish them for the UN upgrade, which was fiercely opposed by Israel and the United States.

But Xavier Abu Eid, an adviser to the Palestine Liberation Organisation, said this year’s celebration of Christmas would still be particularly meaningful for Palestinians.

“At Christmas, we celebrate the birth of the prince of hope and the prince of peace, and the Palestinian people have been hoping for 64 years to achieve a just peace,” since the creation of the state of Israel, he told AFP.

“After the UN vote we feel a step closer to this just peace we’ve been searching for.”

Dotted among Palestinians in Manger Square were hundreds of foreign tourists.

“The expectations were between 10-15,000 foreign tourists coming into the city,” Samir Hazbun, chairman of Bethlehem’s Chamber of Commerce, told AFP.

Many visitors won’t spend the night in Bethlehem, but Hazbun said most of the city’s 3,700 hotel rooms were booked up both international visitors and Palestinians from inside Israel or elsewhere in the West Bank.

Canadian tourist Joan Cross, 58, was beaming as she photographed the procession entering Manger Square.

“It’s just magical,” she told AFP. “I’ve waited 20 years to come as a Christian pilgrim.

“My mum and I always wanted to come together, but she passed away aged 97 last year, unfortunately, so this trip is really for both of us.”

LASTMA officials beat bus driver to death in Lagos

Despite that it was few hours to Christmas, a 54-year-old man, a commercial bus driver Isaac Popoola, was allegedly killed by a Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) official at Brown Bus stop in Oshodi, around 6.30a.m on Monday.

While narrating what led to the death of Popoola, his bus conductor, Aremu Salau said a LASTMA pickup van crossed Popoola’s bus while he was heading towards Brown bus stop from Igando/ Isheri area of Lagos State and was ordered to come down by the officials.

According to Salawu, Popoola refused to come down, while appealing to know his offence since he didn’t contravene any traffic law. The LASTMA officials could not explain but continued to struggle with Popoola. In the process, they started beating him on the head with the iron of the vehicle’s seat belt until he gave up the ghost.

“When Baba refused to leave the steering, the LASTMA man started hitting his head against the steering and the door frame. He did this so many
times, until he was unable to talk again.

“I then rushed to Mosafejo Police Station where I made a statement and people who were watching the scenario were able to apprehend one of the LASTMA men (Olatunde). They brought him to the police station before we were transferred to Area F.

“They did not tell him (driver) what his offence was because no passenger alighted from our bus at a wrong point and he used his seat belt.”

However in a statement released by the General Manager of the agency, Babatunde Edu, the alleged officials- Adesanya Olatunde and Ogunride Oludele were in the area to carry out illegal operation and acted on their own contrary to the operational guidelines of the agency.

“The arrested suspect (Olatunde) has been handed over to Mosafejo Police Station and eventually transferred to Akinpelu Police Station for further
investigation; while effort is on to arrest the other suspect (Ogunrinde),” Edu said.
