Nelson Mandela Finally Discharged From Hospital

Johannesburg, South Africa (CNN) — Former President Nelson Mandela has been discharged from a hospital and will continue receiving treatment at his home in Houghton, a spokesman for South African President Jacob Zuma told CNN on Wednesday.

Mandela, 94, was treated for an acute respiratory infection in 2011. He was hospitalized for a lung infection on December 8; and on December 15, he underwent surgery for removal of gallstones.

Mandela has not appeared in public since the 2010 World Cup hosted in his country.

During the time of apartheid in South Africa, Mandela was convicted of sabotage and was imprisoned for 27 years until 1990.

He and former President F.W. de Klerk, who dismantled apartheid, shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. A year later, Mandela became the nation’s first black president.

South Africa last month issued banknotes bearing the picture of Mandela.

Despite his rare public appearances in recent years, Mandela retains his popularity and is considered a hero of democracy in the nation.

South Africans celebrated his 94th birthday in July by participating in good deeds nationwide to honor the legacy of the famous statesman.

Citizens performed at least 67 minutes of public service on his birthday, a reference to the number of years he devoted to helping others.

A day before his birthday, former U.S. President Bill Clinton and his daughter, Chelsea, had lunch with Mandela in the small southeastern village where he grew up and spends most of his time.

Clinton, whose presidential term coincided with Mandela’s, hailed him as a “wonderful friend” and planted a tree in his honor during the visit.

“He didn’t call me a single time, not once, when he didn’t ask about Hillary (Clinton) and Chelsea,” Clinton said of their conversations during their time in office. “If it wasn’t too late, he’d ask me to go get Chelsea, bring her to the phone, ask about her homework.”

Clinton said the anti-apartheid icon has never lost touch with his humanity.

“I saw in him something that I try not to lose in myself, which is no matter how much responsibility you have, he remembered you were a person first,” he said.

Mandela’s impact has extended far beyond the borders of his own country. After he left office in 1999, he was involved in international situations ranging from conflicts in Africa to the Mideast.

In January 2000, he addressed the United Nations Security Council, appealing for help in ending the brutal civil war between ethnic Hutus and Tutsis in Burundi. In December 2003, he participated in the signing of the Geneva Accords for peace in the Middle East.

A bronze statue of Mandela was unveiled in Parliament Square in London in 2007, and in 2009 the United Nations designated July 18 as Mandela Day in 2009.

94 people die in 191 accidents within 5 days

No fewer than 94 persons have lost their lives to different road mishaps that occoured across the country within 5 days of this year’s Christmas celebration, the Federal Road Safety Commission has said.

According to Corps Marshall and Chief Executive of Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, Mr. Osita Chidoka, the crashes claimed the innocent lives in about 191 accidents.
Chidoka made this known in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, where he went to monitor the traffic situation on the ever-busy Lokoja-Abuja highway.

The FRSC boss blamed the sad occurrences on high speed.

Expressing his worry over the rampant road accidents, Mr. Chidoka condemned the attitude of motorists who often violate traffic sign.

He said, “It is an attitudinal issue as this year witnessed rehabilitation of major corridors of the highways, people tend to disregard traffic laws bordering on speed limits and accelerate beyond recommended speed thus resulting to the figures we have witnessed the last 5 days. We have devised measures to address this unpleasant development”.

Chidoka however urged road users to minimise their speed rate and obey traffic regulations to avoid more road disasters.

While expressing his gladness over the free flow of traffic on Abuja-Lokoja-Okene highways this festive period, he lauded his men and other security agencies for bringing traffic situation under control.
He also warned drivers against over-speeding, overloading and the use of seat belt. He also asserted that offenders would not go unpunished.

The Corps Marshall however applauded the Federal Government for its quick intervention on rehabilitation of bad roads across the country, noting that the road audit, which was presented to the Federal Ministry of Works and the Federal Road Management Agency was urgently attended to.

His words, “In my five years as Corps Marshal, I have never seen such a concentrated effort to rehabilitate the roads by FERMA and the Ministry of Works”.

Chidoka who extended his traffic monitoring to Niger Bridge in Onitsha and its environs observed that sanity has been restored in the areas.

He noted that Anambra State Sector Commander, Hyginus Omeje, had to temporarily relocate to Onitsha on Sunday from Awka to control the traffic.

The graduate of Hotel Management and Catering, and mother of two reveals in a chat with Angela Davies that a lot of men don’t see actresses as marriageable.

Enjoy the interesting and revealing chat below….

What is the misconception you think people have about you?

People think I am rude and arrogant because of the roles I play most times. And for that, I don’t like to be stereotyped. However, because of my physique and voice people tend to be comfortable with me playing the role of a bad girl. Unfortunately, people have misconstrued me to be bad, arrogant and always snobbish but that is not me. But with the new roles that I have played of recent, people are trying to get acquainted with my real person, trying to separate me from whom I really am in movies.

So, can you please describe your personality?

Aisha Abimbola is a humble, extremely down to earth, God fearing, kind and gentle hearted.

How did you meet your husband and what was the attraction?

The attraction was what made us friends initially. He was a member of my church, Christ Embassy and we started talking about Pastor Chris, that was where the attraction started and we became friends. Months later, precisely on November 2, 2004 he asked me to marry him and I said we are just friends, no dating and no courtship. However on February 3, 2005 we were married.

What do you do to keep your marriage intact because a lot of celebrity marriages have crashed?

(Laughs) Na God, nothing pass God. A lot of men out there don’t see actresses as marriageable, they see us as toys. They see us as women they can just come to, gamble with and go. Imagine a man betting with his friend that I can date that actress, even marry her and have kids from her. And once he is done, he is gone.

Before I was married, I had different impressions about marriage but now I know better. There are quite a number of women, even actresses who want to be married but when a man batters a woman and she is at the point of death, do you want her to still stay? A lot of actresses are facing this just that they cannot come out and say this is what we are facing.

Some have tried maintaining a loveless marriage, they tried holding on to it and some of them are dead now. And I am not an advocate of such, if it is not working, don’t die there, instead of you to die and leave your kids as orphans, please leave and take care of your kids.

Goodluck: “Nigerians Think I Am Slow Because I Avoid Taking Hasty Decisions”

President Goodluck Jonathan Tuesday explained why most Nigerians believed that his administration was slow in implementing and responding to some of the people-oriented policies and projects of the government.

Goodluck-Jonathan2
Accoring to him, this was because of his resolve to avoid taking hasty decisions that may be fraught with mistakes and which might be more difficult to correct.

The president who stated this during the Christmas Day service at the Diocese of Abuja Anglican Communion, the Cathedral Church of the Advent Life Camp, Gwarinpa, Abuja added that the foundation being laid for infrastructural development would stand the test of time.

According to the president, “By human thinking, our administration is slow, I won’t say we are slow but we need to think through things properly if we are to make lasting impact. If we rush we will make mistakes and sometimes it is more difficult to correct those mistakes.

File photo: President Goodluck Jonathan addressing the Nation at The State House in Abuja
“I want to assure Nigerians that any step we take whether little or giant, we won’t go back. And where we need to act fast we will do so, that we demonstrated with the flood disaster because it required immediate response.

“Democracy must be dictated by ballot papers and I think we have achieved that with electoral reform. We will not go back but will continue to improve.

“For our transformation to be sustained we Nigerians must be reformed. We must not see our country as where we make money only and build walls and live as prisoners because of the criminal activities of few” he said.

The president who was accompanied to the church service by his family members reiterated that his administration is committed and will keep faith with its promises.

“At least what we are doing in agriculture, transportation and power has been noted by the Primate. We have laid solid foundation for power, agriculture and transport sectors and I can assure you we will not go back again.

The President also underscored the need for re-orientation in the country, noting that a situation where some criminal minded Nigerians vandalise government properties to sabotage government’s effort must be condemned as such actions are tantamount to the transformation plan of the government.

“People play politics with things that affect even their own lives. You wonder why a person that carries saw to go and cut down a conductor carrying cables that produce electricity, because you want a government to fail. This happened somewhere in Enugu. You begin to wonder if they are humans. That is why we need to reform if we must transform” he said.

While emphasising the crucial role of the church in mobilising support for government, the president said; “The church has a great role to play if the transformation must succeed because you can’t transform without reformation and is the role of the church to do so.

“I urge the church to come up with various programmes to talk about how we Nigerians can be reform.”

My Boyfriend Is Married In Nigeria

black-couple-1

Ok, I have been with my boyfriend for almost eleven years and I love him very much. I am African American and he is Nigerian (Igbo) he inspired me to go back to school when I first met him, now I am an RN. He happens to be a doctor here in US. We have gone on many trips but none to Nigeria. I have never met anyone from his family and he has a sister that lives about 30Min away from him whom he says he is not close with. I spend quite a bit of time at his home but he has never left me alone there nor do I have a key, but he doesn’t have one to my place either. About 7 years ago he told me his sisters didn’t approve of our relationship and we decided to end it we both hugged and cried. I was devastated, Three months went by and he called me telling me he loved me and missed me and didn’t want to lose me. So, During this time a friend of mine told me she seen him and another women at the post office together. So about 2 weeks later he showed up at my door and we went to dinner to talk and ended up being intimate that night. That same night I noticed a ring on his finger and Said what did u go and get married and he said no it was a gift his sister bought him and since I have never seen it again. Since we got back together back in 2007 he has consistently tried to get me to gave a baby, but i refuse. My daughter has often said she thinks he is married and I feel it is true,he goes home once a year for 6 weeks. I have asked him and he denies it. So, recently I was on his computer at his home and it got a virus, I told him I would take it the following day to the computer store to get it removed. I know if you look for stuff u will find it. Well, I was on his computer and I opened up 2 files and one was a marriage certificate from the church in Nigeria (Enugu) and it was dated 2007 and the other was a passport showing his true age he is 10 years older than he told me he was which I’m ok with the age but why lie and married. I am torn and why doesn’t his wife live here? I need advice, I so love this man and he babies me and is so affectionate. Who can live a double life and what if I would have had a baby, he is not going to leave his wife. Help!!! I was 27 when I met him and thought he was 31 years.

article-2252994-16a5553f000005dc-93_306x758
The proud parents spend Christmas Eve picking out some last minute gifts, with a trip to a toy shop and the upmarket store Bergdorf Goodman in New York. Dressed in a festive striped outfit of skirt and top, and with her hair tied up in a bun, Beyonce looked filled with the joys of the season. She wore a pair of smart black heels, tights and added a snazzy pair of sunglasses to complete her look. Jay-Z was more casual in camouflage trousers and a leather jacket.

An excited fan took to Twitter to say she had met the couple.”Just talked to jay-Z & Beyonce in Bergdorfs – nicest people ever… Literally my life’s complete,”- she wrote.

This is sure to also be a happy Christmas for Beyonce, who has signed a £30m deal to become the face of Pepsi. With a personal fortune of an estimated $200m, plus her husband’s vast wealth, the deal cements her reputation as one of the biggest names in the business. Not only will she appears in adverts for the soft drink, but in a first for the company, her face will be featured on cans and bottles of the drink. While other well known figures, such as David Beckham and Jennifer Lopez, have been used in TV and magazine campaigns it is the first time that a celebrity’s face will adorn the drink. The limited edition cans will be released in March and sold worldwide. The promotion will be kick started by Beyonce’s appearance in February during the half time show at the Super Bowl, the world’s most watched sports event with worldwide audience of over 500 million viewers.

Iyanya Says [Tonto And Yvonne Are Okay But He Wants A God Fearing Woman]

Nigerian singer Iyanya, who has been in the news lately over a not-too-clear triangular relationship blues/drama, involving him and Ghanaian actress Yvonne Nelson and Nigerian actress Tonto Dikeh, has shot down suggestions of a bad blood among all three characters.

Yvonne-Nelson-and-Tonto-Dike-and-Iyanya11
The “Kukere” and “Ur Waist” singer has categorically denied reports that point to a not-too-pleasant relationship, adding that apart from the fact that he is “cool” with Yvonne and Tonto, he also respects both ladies, and that he “appreciate their hard work”.

“I’m cool with Yvonne. Apart from the fact that I mentioned her name in my song, she is a wonderful person,” he said in an interview with the Nigerian website Bella Naija.

“She is one of the nicest, coolest people that I know. The same with Tonto. They are two people I respect a lot. I appreciate their hard work and they are doing very well in their field.

“Yvonne is my hommie, we are cool people even till now as we speak. Tonto is my padi, we are cool. The media and people out there are just having fun”.

Talking more about relationships, Iyanya says: “it’s hard to find somebody that would be with you and actually take the pain, stand the rain. I feel like anyone I’ve tried to have a relationship with always says “no, I can’t”.

On the choice of woman he would ordinarily date, Iyanya says: “I like classy women. When I say classy, I don’t mean you must have money, but at least know your self-worth and carry yourself well. I want a God fearing woman too because at the end of the day women have the deepest secrets. Women are fragile even when they act like they are bosses so if you mess up, there is a possibility that a woman will bring you down”.

The top-selling Nigerian act has also ruled out dating a celebrity, insisting that “the thing about dating celebs is that it would most likely not last”.

“I can date anybody but the thing about dating celebs is that it would most likely not last. The only way it may last is if they are not successful. But if they are both successful, when people see them together, they would jump on it. That alone has an effect on the relationship because they won’t be free”.

Iyanya’s clarification on the issue should offer some relief to both Yvonne and Tonto, who have had to respond to rumours about their relationship with the singer, over the past few weeks.

Iyanya is due in Accra this week for the Ghana Movie Awards, and Sarkodie Live In Concert, all happening on December 25.

What Governors Are Giving At Christmas

In the spirit of Christmas, Imo state governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha declared two-week holiday for civil servants in the state.

He also disclosed that each worker would receive N10, 000 as Christmas bonus.

Governor Rochas, again, extended the gesture to security agencies in the state.

He has reportedly pumped N500 million into uplifting the spirits of the servicemen for the holidays.

He said officers and men of the Nigerian Police, Nigerian Army, Nigerian Civil Defence and Security Corps (NCDSC), State Security Services (SSS), Nigerian Immigration, Federal Road Safety corps (FRSC), Nigerian Prisons, National drug Law enforcement agency (NDLEA) and Nigerian customs Service, will get N10, 000 each from the largess.

And in Abia State, Governor Theodore Orji has granted pardon to eight prisoners in commemoration of the Christmas celebration.

Orji’s gesture was announced in a statement issued in Umuahia by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Ugochukwu Emezue.

The beneficiaries included Ngozi Simon, Ngozi Esina, Okwuonu Eme, Lawrence Egbu and Sunday Amala who were serving various jail terms for murder.

The rest were Chidiebere Jacob and Pius Anizo who were convicted of manslaughter, and Chibuzo Azuonwe who was convicted of robbery.

In a Christmas message also made available to newsmen, Orji urged Christians in the state to ‘’continue to exhibit those virtues Jesus Christ symbolises’.

He charged them ‘’to use this period to pray for the peace and unity of Nigeria’’ in view of the current security challenges in the country.

The statement quoted the governor as saying that ‘’prayers can change situations for good.

‘’The governor said he is optimistic that the country will soon become the envy of other nations.’’

The statement assured the people of adequate security of lives and property during and after the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

Meanwhile, Governor Martin Elechi of Ebonyi State has lifted the three-month suspension on three commissioners in the state for improper dressing to a state banquet.

The Commissioners are: Chief Hycinth Ikpo, Culture and Tourism; Mr Chukwuma Nwandugo, Works and Transport and Dr Ben Igwenyi, Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice.

The commissioners were suspended on 24 November and were barred from attending any state function during the suspension.

In a statement made available to newsmen and signed by Dr Onyekachi Eni, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, the suspension was lifted 22 December.

“The suspension was lifted in the spirit of Christmas and New Year Festivities and the goodwill that traditionally accompany the periods.

“The lifting is in the expectation that appropriate lessons have been learnt from the incidence,” the statement stated.

Christmas cow goes crazy, attacks man in Onitsha

Drama ensued in Onitsha, Anambra State yesterday as a middle-aged man, Obinna Adimora, a trader at the Onitsha main market was hospitalised for being seriously injured after being attacked by an angry cow.

Obinna’s journey to the hospital bed started when occupants of a commercial building at Ben Aghaeze Street contributed and purchased a cow for the Christmas.

It was gathered that the Christmas cow was bought at the popular Ugwuoba cattle market near Awka, Anambra State capital at the rate of N120, 000.
Unfortunately, when the butcher was making preparations to slaughter the animal, the angry cow had sensed what was about to befall it, thus it made a loud noise, escaped from the rope where it was tied and descended on the people waiting to share its meat.

The angry cow further went berserk, jumping all over the place. It broke the table placed in front of the building, used the horns to break the windscreen of a car parked around the place, as the people took to their heels.

But unluckily for Obinna, he fell while running and the animal descended on him.

The intervention of some Hausa (Suya sellers) and security officers in the neighbourhood prevented the ‘mad’ cow from sending Obinna to his early grave.

Meanwhile, the madness could not stop the cow from being killed as it was later bundled and slaughtered by the Hausa boys.

Expressing shock over the reaction of the cow, some residents of Ben Aghaeze Street claimed that the cow might have been possessed.

But Ikechukwu, one of the contributors asserted that the cow’s display of madness was just a mere drama as that did not stop them from devouring its meat.

He also regretted the attack on Obinna and prayed for his quick recovery.

Osaze Says, “My anger is now over”

Out-of-favour Super Eagles striker, Osaze Odemwingie, is done being angry with coach Stephen Keshi and the Nigeria Football Federation following his dramatic exclusion from the team ahead of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.
Odemwingie was in a rage on Twitter when he learnt of his exclusion alongside significant players like Dynamo Kiev’ Taye Taiwo and Levante’s Obafemi Martins.
But on Monday, Odemwingie wrote on same social network, saying his anger was over and needed to focus on club action.
“Anger is over. Full focus on WBA season and next game. I don’t need any distraction, neither the Eagles camp. Both independent,” he wrote.
“Thanks for the support! Had to be disappointed with how they did it. Didn’t have to see that in press. Respect is reciprocal.”
Meanwhile, ex-international Olusegun Fetuga, has advised the excluded players not to take issue personal, saying the selection was for the best.
“There’s no reason anyone of them should insult the coach or the NFF for being excluded from the team. If a player doesn’t make the cut now, he can be in the squad in the future,” Fetuga said.
“Osaze’s outburst was totally unnecessary because you can always call the coach and express your feeling; going to the social network will further damage the relationship between him and the coach.”
Fetuga added, “Ordinarily, the coach owes no player any explanation on why he would not make a team. Both Keshi and Osaze need not take the dispute to the press, it’s unprofessional.”
