Mysterious fire kills pregnant woman, three others in Asaba

A mysterious fire outbreak claimed the lives of a pregnant woman and three others in Asaba, Delta State.

Eyewitnesses said the fire outbreak started at about 1:30am on Saturday and consumed an eight-room apartment along Okpanam road, leaving the pregnant woman and the three other occupants of the house who could not escape to be burnt beyond recognition.

The source of the fire outbreak could not be immediately ascertained as it was said to have consumed the entire building mysteriously with the support of the weak harmattan season.

But some residents of the area said it may be connected with the process of knock-out shootings that has been on the increase in the last few days in the state.

Checks revealed that victims of the unfortunate incident were caught in deep sleep when the fire started and had struggled to save their lives but all to no avail.

The landlord of the building, Ogbueshi Nwankwo, said that he got a wind of the outbreak after the fire service men had offered their best to save many lives.

Nollywood actor and ex-president of the AGN, Segun Arinze has dispelled the death rumours trailing actor, Pete Edochie.

Arinze says the story is malicious and untrue and should be disregarded.

Representatives of the Colombian singer, Shakira have denied the story about her delivery, stating that the singer is still pregnant and expected to deliver anytime soon.

This is coming after the message posted by her husband, Gerard Pique, who announced her delivery on the micro blogging site, Twitter, ‘Our son was born! We’re very happy! Thank you all for your messages‘, he wrote. The message immediately went viral, with many news organizations picking it up.

It was apparently a prank and Pique, we gathered, was only taking part in the Spanish equivalent of April fool’s day…

Gov Wada rejects treatment abroad insists on getting treatment in Nigeria

Contrary to insinuations, Governor Idris Wada of Kogi State may not be flown abroad for the treatment of the injuries he sustained in the accident involving his convoy on  Friday.

Doctors at the hospital where the governor was receiving treatment hinted, yesterday, that Wada rejected the option of flying him abroad for further treatment after undergoing what was described as inter-locking nail surgery on his thigh broken in the crash.

The surgery, which lasted two hours, was said to have been successful.

Spokesman for the governor, Mr Jacob Edi, echoed the doctors position when he said his principal was stable.
“I saw His Excellency after the unfortunate accident. He has been stabilised since last night (Friday). I spoke with him and he shook my hands. It was after he stabilised that he was flown to Abuja,”Edi told Sunday Vanguard.

The governor was said to have suffered a broken thigh among other injuries when his vehicle ran into a ditch after a burst tyre on Friday afternoon at Emi Woro village, about 12 kilometers to Lokoja, the state capital.
His ADC died while his driver reportedly escaped unhurt.

Wada was returning to Lokoja from Kogi State University where he attended a function when the crash occurred.

The governor was rushed to the Kogi State Specialist, Lokoja where he was treated before he was taken to Cedar Crest Hospital, Abuja  for further treatment.

Vice President Namadi Sambo; Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State; and a former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national chairman, Alhaji Ahmadu  Ali; were among those who visited the Abuja hospital to see the injured Wada  yesterday.

The Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Felix Ogodengbe, who spoke for the doctors handling the governor’s treatment, confirmed, yesterday, that Wada suffered a broken thigh among other injuries.

Ogedengbe said the governor ruled out the option of being flown abroad for further treatment of his injuries after a two-hour  operation on the thigh on Friday night.

He stated: “When  the governor was brought in at 8pm (on Friday),  we were told he was involved in a car accident and we checked him and explained the nature of his injuries to him. We also told him about our ability to manage the injuries. He had a broken thigh and he was taken to the theatre. The governor has since stabilized and he had a nice night; he said he would not be taken abroad for treatment because he has confidence in our capacity to manage him. There is no immediate need to fly him abroad.”

The medical director could, however, not  state the possible date when the patient would be discharged, saying Wada needed time to recuperate.

He said, “The governor is quite happy to take treatment here; the treatment is on-going. He needs some days in the hospital and I can’t give a date of discharge now.”

Findings at the hospital indicated that the surgical procedure performed on  Wada  would enable him regain the full use of the affected thigh  with interlocking nails.

The use of the interlocking nails procedure, according to medical experts, entails intramedullary pin secured in position by proximal and distal transfixing screws which engage the bone to the nail to provide axial bending and torsional stability.

Meanwhile, Governor Theodore Orji of Abia State, yesterday, prayed God to grant Wada quick recovery even as he urged Nigerians to also pray for the governor.

Orji, who described the accident as “very sad and shocking”, also commiserated with the family of the Kogi governor’s ADC, who died in the accident.

The Abia governor, who spoke through his Chief Press Secretary, Ugochukwu Emezue, lamented the death of the ADC.

Two daughters of the Niger State Governor, Muazu Babangida Aliyu recently got married.  Jamila and Farida. Their wedding was graced by notable dignitaries  which included Second Republic President, Alhaji Shehu Shagari, former Military President, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, former Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar and Danmasanin Kano, Dr. Yusuf Maitama Sule.

Namadi Sambo , the Vice President led an entourage of the Federal Government to the event.

Jamila was married to Suleiman Aliyu while Farida wedded Muktar Bello at the ceremony held in the Governor Aliyu’s family house near the Central Mosque.

Senate President David Mark and Speaker, House of Representatives Aminu Tambuwal, Governor of Imo State Rochas Okorocha and his Ekiti State counterpart, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, also attended the occasion.

Obafemi Martins:Balotelli should be happy I am dating his sister

Nigerian striker, Obafemi Martins is brimming with new life. Following a turbulent stint in the Russian League with Rubin Kazhan, the 28-year-old forward has since rediscovered his prowess in front of goal at Levante. His new lease of life could also be adduced to the fact that he has found love in the form of gorgeous beauty, Abigail Barwuah, Italy and Manchester City striker, Mario Balotelli’s sister.

To save his career from drifting into oblivion, Martins took a big step by taking a huge pay cut (it is speculated to be from an annual salary of €2million to just €600,000) to move to Spain and play for Levante, little known in this part before his move. Less than six months in the region of Valencia, and Martins seems to have taken in the Spanish sunshine and scored six goals in 11 matches. “I’m busy playing now and scoring goals, so I’m happy,”

Martins told Goal.com at his residence in the upscale Victoria Garden City on the outskirts of Lagos. “You know, as a footballer, you can’t expect everything to be going smoothly all the time. When things are difficult, you try to sort it out yourself, you try to push yourself back up. “What I did was, I made the decision to leave Russia and I’m in Levante now scoring goals. I wanted my fans to know that I can still play and do well.

That’s why I left Russia. “I chose the favourite team, which is Levante and the pay cut was very big. I lost a lot of money because I love football. I have a passion for football that’s why I did it. And now, I’m glad I made the decision and I’ve been playing.” He’s got a look-in from Nigeria’s Coach Stephen Keshi, who called him up for the November friendly match against Venezuela in Miami, USA. Even though he didn’t make the list of 32 for the final camping ahead of next month’s Africa Cup of Nations, the striker has a lot to be thankful for.

“They can’t judge me with the Venezuela game because I played against (Real) Madrid. We played around half past nine and finished around half past 12. Before I went to the airport, it was around four in the morning and I took about an 11-hour flight to Miami. After a day or two, we played again. We’re not machines, they can’t expect me to give 120 per cent. “Even (Cristiano) Ronaldo and (Lionel) Messi can’t do it with the flight. If that’s the reason they didn’t choose me, that’s their decision. Right now I’m happy that I’m playing again and people can see me. So, I’m not really bothered.

When they want to call, they’ll call and if they don’t I’ll face my club and play.” In these past few months, he has played against the two big Spanish teams, Barcelona and Real Madrid, and their stars, Ronaldo and Messi, arguably the two best footballers in the world at the moment. Even though Levante lost against both teams, it was a good experience. “I used to play against them. When I was in England, I played against Ronaldo, and Messi in the Champions League when I was at Rubin Kazan. They are good players and their teams are wonderful. They are not small teams that you can defeat easily. They are good players and they are doing very well. “Whenever I play against them, I always see them as among the best players in the world. Everybody wants to play against them. I’m glad that I’m in Spain now playing against all those top players and teams and I hope to continue with what I’ve been doing.”

When it comes to love, Martins is not one to make his relationships public. But in the past few weeks, the blogosphere has been agog with news that he’s dating Mario Balotelli’s elder sister, Abigail. For someone so private, the decision to make it public must mean one thing; he is smitten with her. “That’s my personal life anyway, but I’ve been seeing some blogs saying we’re getting married, saying she had a kid for me. That’s bull s**t. People are just twisting things up. I don’t understand why they are doing that. “The relationship is true, but getting married or not, we haven’t discussed anything like that. She’s upstairs and we’re happy together.” He also dismissed insinuations that Abigail’s younger brother has kicked against their relationship.

Abigail, 24, told The Sun in an interview in April that she couldn’t date a footballer: “Mario wouldn’t let me anyway. He knows too well what they are like. Women surround them. Girls throw themselves at them.” But Martins responded: “Mario is my boy. The respect is there because I used to play in Inter Milan in the youth team with him. He’s giving me my respect and I’m doing the same for him. People are putting it in the news that he’s upset; of course, he’s glad. “He’s glad that Obafemi Martins is dating his sister. If he gets jealous, then it means he doesn’t want his sister to grow. But it’s not like that.

The boy is not bad. Trust me, he’s not a bad boy.” Martins himself has been cast as a bad boy by the media in times past. Often seen in nightclubs during his vacation. But he shakes off that image. “I’m not a bad boy! When it is time for me to have fun, I have fun but not getting drunk. They’ve never seen me get drunk in this Lagos. I drive back home all the time.

They can see me in the clubs, but it doesn’t mean I don’t know what I’m doing. “It’s good that they see Obafemi Martins in the club than me just staying at home and my fans can’t even see me. I went to D’Banj’s Koko Concert and there were no bodyguards. I just walked on my own. It’s fun for me,” he said. This is the time of the year when you know if your man is serious about you or no. A lot of things happen towards the end of the year, especially in relationships. Many couple even get married at this time. A lot of travelling, meeting of parents and all that happen this period. In case you are not among those lucky few, here is how to know if your man wants you for keeps or for the fun of it. He introduces you as his girlfriend: If you have been going around for sometime and he, one day, just introduces you very comfortably to his friends saying, “Meet my girlfriend, or the woman of my life”, it is a milestone. It means he has accepted you as an integral part of his life. Counsellors and psychologists agree that men normally do not want to give instant commitments, so when he introduces you as “his girlfriend or his lady” it means he is comfortable about his friends knowing your importance in his life. He was murdered by friends,dead body hidden by Police

He woke up that fateful day on November 6, oblivious of the fate awaiting him in just a matter of hours.

Done with his toilet routine, Goodnews Udo set out for work, hoping to return the following day. He never did. He was killed by two brothers over a meager transaction that went awry.

Unlike his beautiful name-Goodnews-he was rendered a bad-news to his aged parents who had struggled to raise him.

Ironically, the two brothers trained under him as plumbers according to a source who pleaded anonymity.

Udo’s neighbours are still in shock that a dispute over ownership of a mattress could be the reason for his death. They are also suspicions that there might be more to it. Goodnews had the plan to move to a better accommodation after the Christmas-a plan- he has told his assailants.

The two brothers wanted to buy the mattress from him. They settled for N3,000. The brothers paid N2,000 with a promise to pay N1,000 after the Christmas break when they would take custody of the mattress. Trouble however began when the brothers came for the mattress on November 6, asking for the mattress contrary to their earlier agreement. Udo who promised to keep his own side of the deal reminded them that the delivery date was after the Christmas break when they would have all returned from their villages.

Our Correspondent gathered that the adamant brothers insisted on taking custody. Sensing that they had made up their mind to change the agreement, Udo, it was learnt, told the brothers to come for their money the following day to stave off trouble. But there was no consensus between the parties which eventually led to a squabble.

Neighbors who heard their raised voices rushed to the scene to separate them. The brothers went away. Unknown to Udo, they had laid an ambush for him. As he was going out to buy food, they attacked him. He decided to fight for his freedom. In the ensuing melee, one of the brothers ran away only to return with a knife which he used to stab the deceased in the stomach. Realizing that his life was in danger, Udo fled the scene with blood gushing from his stomach. But he could not run for too long before he collapsed close to a nearby church.

A woman who was going for bible study sighted him and covered his stomach with her wrapper before raising the alarm for rescue.

The pastor of the church (name withheld) and a few congregations rushed to the scene where they evacuated to the Apo Police Station where the pastor made a formal complaint before taking him to the hospital in the company of the Police where he was confirmed dead.

Since the unfortunate incident residents of the Apo resettlement area have been in perpetual fear of possible raid by the Police. Some who witnessed the ugly scene have also kept sealed lips for fear of police case.

When our Correspondent visited the uncompleted shopping mall in the area, the place was quiet. The house once occupied by the deceased was also in disarray. His parents who live in Ibadan, Oyo state, were still in shock.

Only the father tried to speak; and when he did, he caved in to emotion. With tears rolling down his cheek, he began to recant the event.

Mr. Tom Udo said “We are sad by this tragic loss. He was our hope; we did the little within our means to send him to secondary school. We could not send to high institution due to our economic situation. But he worked hard and struggle to learn plumbing from where he was fending for himself and the family. Each time he called, he always gave us hope. He promised to bring us out of poverty when he relocated to Abuja. I remember the exact words. He said:” daddy and mummy don’t worry, if I make it in life suffering will be a thing of the past in this family.” I did not know he would meet his death in Abuja. His mother also did not know. If we knew, we would have discouraged him from coming to Abuja. But we are not God-we don’t know tomorrow.”

If Udo’s death was tragic, it is more tragic that his parents are still battling to know the whereabouts of his corpse since it was taken away by the Police. They said the whereabouts of the remains of their late son has been guarded in secrecy by the Police authority.

Besides, they alleged that the Police had not done much to bring the criminal to justice.
“Up till today, the Police are yet to tell me the whereabouts of his remains. I have been frustrated by every step I have taken”, the bereaved man said.

Calls to the FCT Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO), Doris England, were not answered. She did also not reply to a text message from Our Correspondent, on the allegation.
But the family’s Lawyer, Austin Uzendu, said he had written two petitions to the Police on the case with no response.

He said the parents of the deceased had faced humiliation in the hands of the Police in their efforts to seek Justice on the matter. He could also not tell if the Police had any plan to charge the two brothers.
