Pastor impregnates 6 married women in one year

A Pastor at a church in Matobo District, Matabeleland South, has been expelled after her impregnated six married women who were members of his church.

The ‘man of God’, Pastor Derek Ngulube, formerly of Faith Ministries, was shown the red card by the church’s elders late last month bringing to an end his reign of terror. Pastor Ngulube is reported to have impregnated the six within a period of one year.

His antics were brought to light after one of the pastors prophesied that there was an elder within the church who was in the habit of bedding married women. After a ‘witch hunt’, it was established that Pastor Ngulube was the elder who had been fingered in the prophecy.

A source said on being questioned, Pastor Ngulube opened up and said he was indeed the one fingered in the prophecy.

“He tried to clear his name but later came back to his senses and said he was the one in the prophecy,” said the source.

It is reported that Pastor Ngulube also revealed that ALL the women he had bedded fell pregnant. On hearing the news, the church’s elders are said to have come to a decision to expel him.

“What he did is just disgraceful and a person like him could not be allowed to be part of a religious institution because what he did goes against all that Christianity stands for,” said the source.

The source added that the husbands of the women that Ngulube claimed to have impregnated were summoned by the church’s elders and had the news broken to them.

“Some of them were threatening to beat up Pastor Ngulube but they were restrained by the church elders. Others took up the issue with the traditional leadership,” said the source.

Contacted for comment, Pastor Ngulube said he was sorry.

“I feel bad and I want to say I am very sorry for what I did. If I could be given another chance I wouldn’t repeat the mistake. I also welcome the punishment that the church leaders gave me,” he said.

Meanwhile, another pastor at Brethren Christ Church, in the same district, was ordered to pay three beasts by Chief Masuku after he impregnated a married woman.

According to a source, Pastor Lameck Maphosa was allegedly dragged to the traditional court on 21 March this years where Chief Masuku ordered him to pay three cows as compensation for impregnating another man’s wife.

MBGN 2012 winner,Isabella Ayuk debunks rumours about her romance with deputy speaker

The beauty queen was rumoured to be in a relationship with Deputy Speaker, House of Reps, Hon Emeka Ihedioha. Below is what she said in a recent interview:”As an MBGN winner, there will always be stories about one thing or the other. It’s a normal thing. The story is hilarious and not true. People should learn to get their facts right. These people actually do not have names or faces. At first, it was the story of how I lied about my age, then came the dethronement story. Now this! Where were these people when I went for MBGN twice and finished top 10 and won best traditional costume award? And in 2012, with determination and persistence, I won and people who were obviously not happy about my victory cooked up stories. I can’t bother about what people say because some people are just on this earth to talk about others.

Amnesty:Jonathan release boko haram terrorists in detention

As the military offensive to dismantle Boko Haram terrorists activities and the camps in North East Nigeria continues, President Goodluck Jonathan has directed the release from Police, SSS and Military detention centers, of hundreds of persons held in connection with the insurgency.
The action of the President which took many Nigerians and security agencies by surprise is however interpreted by presidency sources as the ‘Carrot and Stick’ policy by the Commander in Chief to bringing an end to the Boko Haram debacle.

Vanguard gathered that the beneficiaries will cut across such states as Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Bauchi, Kano, Kaduna, Gombe and Niger, though the exact number was not revealed.

The federal government however explained that the decision to order the release is sequel to the request of the Presidential Committee in Dialogue and Reconciliation set up to explore the possibility of amnesty for converted terrorists.

A statement to that effect signed by the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Chris Olukolade said, “Consequent upon the directives of the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, the Defence Headquarters will be releasing from detention a number of persons being held in connection with terrorist activities”.

“The move is in furtherance of the Federal Government position in response to requests by the Presidential Committee on Dialogue and Reconciliation”.

“The measure which is in line with Presidential magnanimity to enhance peace efforts in the country will result in freedom for suspects including all women under custody”.

“The details of the directives and those to benefit from this gesture have been communicated to field units and the Joint Task Force”.

“The beneficiaries will be released to the State Governors who will be involved in further rehabilitation before these suspects are released to their respective community leaders/relations”.

Lagos residents spend N1b monthly for merriment & entertainment

You know what they say, aint no party like a Lagos party. And we are really spending the dough, to the tune of N1billion every month, according to the Lagos State government.
Bankyw_lagosparty
Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr. Ademorin Kuye said made this known yesterday. He said:

“Over N1billion is spent monthly in Lagos state on entertainment and parties, we have the records to confirm this and these people, how many of them pay tax? The money goes into drinks, wine, food, aso-ebi and all of that and when they spend all of this money; they do not want to pay anything to the government”

“This justified the reason why local Governments demand that anyone organising events in the state must pay the Merriment Tax.”

“There is merriment tax in that constitution, its part of the rate Local Governments can collect. We have not fully utilised the benefit of the entertainment industry in this state”.

So basically, the state government is considering the introduction of merriment/party tax? How is that even going to work? Please share your thoughts on this…

“I’m not jealous of Chelsea’s Europa League win, it’s a reward for failure” – Wenger

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, says Chelsea’s triump in the Europa League is a “reward for failure”.

Arsene_Wenger

The Gunners London rivals, defeated Benfica 2-1 in the finalo played at the Amsterdam ArenA, but the Frenchman was not impressed and called for UEFA to stop clubs from dropping into the Europa League from the Champions League.

When he was asked if Chelsea winning the trophy made him jealous, he replied: “No, no. You just wonder once again, you have two teams who are basically in the final who were in the Champions League.

“We raised that question many times at UEFA.

“Is it right to reward teams basically for failure? Their target at the start of the season was the Champions League, not to win the Europa League.

“The teams who go through to the last 16 of the Champions League don’t have a chance afterwards.

“If I had won the Europa League like Chelsea, I’d have been happy as well.

“It’s a trophy. But it would be easiest if no clubs from the Champions League dropped down. Then you can say that the teams who start the Europa League fight in it together.”

10 Boko Haram members killed, and 65 arrested by JTF

65 suspected members of the Islamist sect, Boko Haram, have been apprehended by the military Special Forces and 10 killed

army_set_to_confront_boko_haram.jpg

Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Chris Olukolade, on Saturday said the terrorists were arrested while attempting to flee the various camps that had been raided by the military.

Items seized from the insurgents included vehicles, tricycles and mobile handsets.

Olukolade added that authorities at the Defence Headquarters were so far satisfied with operation since the declaration of state of emergency in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states.

His statement reads: “In continuation of the mission to rid the nation’s territories of all insurgents activities, the Special Forces have apprehended 65 persons confirmed to be terrorists as they made attempt to infiltrate Maiduguri while fleeing from various camps now under attack.

“A total of 11 vehicles, 4 tricycles and 24 handsets were also seized in the process. All the suspects are in custody of the Joint Task Force and are currently being interrogated.

“Meanwhile, the various camps of the terrorists have been found deserted by fleeing insurgents when troops of the Special Task Force stormed the localities. The facilities have been occupied by the troops.

“In another development, troops have engaged and dislodged elements of insurgents groups who carried out attacks on citizens in localities such as Gamboru ward yesterday.

“At the end of the encounter, a total of 10 suspected terrorists were confirmed dead while weapons such as Rocket Propelled Grenade launchers, assorted ammunition and rifle magazines were recovered. The area is being combed to fish out any of the surviving insurgents.

“Also, some of the fleeing insurgents from various camps have been noted to be in search of fuel from neighboring communities. Citizens are advised to report to JTF, any group of persons roaming around the local communities with large quantities of containers

State of Emergency:Boko Haram members flee to Gombe,Bauchi,Jigawa states

Following the declaration of state of emergency in Yobe, Borno and Adamawa states, some members of the fundamentalist Boko Haram sect have started fleeing to neighbouring Gombe, Bauchi and Jigawa states, SUNDAY PUNCH authoritatively reports.

Boko Haram Battle 1

On Thursday, members of the sect attacked two police stations and four banks in Daura, Katsina State.

It was the first time the sect was carrying out attacks in Katsina.

President Goodluck Jonathan placed the three states under emergency rule following unabated bloodbath and bomb attacks which have left hundreds of people and security officials dead.

Security sources confided in our correspondents on Friday that following the increased pressure by the military, some of the insurgents have started sneaking out of the states.

A top military official who pleaded anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on the matter said, “All the states are under intense military surveillance and we are ensuring that no one sneaks out but the insurgents have some secret routes which we are going to block. They will use these secret routes to sneak out because of the heat on them. Ordinarily, they will want to protect their wives, children and the weak among them.”

One of the soldiers deployed in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, also told one of our correspondents that some of the insurgents are fleeing the state to neighbouring ones.

The solider who pleaded anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter said, “We have reports that they are running away to neigbouring states and even neighbouring countries. We are doing our best to ensure that all escape routes are blocked.”

According to the soldier, several residents of Gamboru, Ngala, and Marte, where the sect hoisted its flags are fleeing the area because of heavy military operation.

A security expert and former State Security Service director, Mr. Mike Ejiojor, told SUNDAY PUNCH that it was possible that members of the Boko Haram sect would attempt to escape to states near Borno, Yobe and Adamawa.

“Preventing them from migrating to neighbouring states is the essence of the state of emergency in the three affected states. We hope that it won’t be easy for them to migrate to other states especially if they have cells there,” he said.

Another security expert, Dr. Ona Ekhomu, told one of our correspondents that there was a possibility that members of the sect that had fled the states, could regroup to launch massive attacks on the states under emergency rule.

Ekhomu, who is the President, Association of Industrial Security and Safety Operators of Nigeria, said such a development could lead to having more states on the list of those under emergency rule.

He said, “They will continue to launch attacks, it is not without doubt. Don’t forget that apart from the affected states, other states have some Boko Haram presence, so they may regroup. The military must ensure that they don’t escape from the states.

“The military should use a lot of tactics to freeze the bad guys (Boko Haram). The essence of conducting the military operation in the North-East is to flush out or capture the Boko Haram elements. If they get away, then the purpose of the exercise is defeated.”

He added that members of the sect might wear military uniforms to disguise as they were becoming more adaptive.  According to him, it would become difficult to differentiate between a genuine military officer and a Boko Haram member in military uniform.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Immigration Service has deported 31,822 illegal immigrants from the country in the first five months of the year.

The Public Relations Officer of NIS, Mr. Ekpedeme King, told SUNDAY PUNCH, that the figure represented the total number of immigrants arrested without proper documentation in different parts of the country.

“According to our records, from January this year to the first week of May, the Nigerian Immigration Service arrested and repatriated 31,822 illegal immigrants. I know there is the temptation to link the number to the security situation in the country and the Boko Haram insurgency. But this is the total number of illegal immigrants we have repatriated so far this year, as part of our duties to ensure that every foreigner in the country has adequate documentation,” he said.

Findings showed that most of the deportees were nationals of Niger, Mali and Cameroun, while a small number from other West African countries like Ghana and Benin Republic.

Minister of Interior, Mr. Abba Moro, who confirmed this development, said the illegal aliens came into the country through the many porous border inlets, adding that to fight terrorism in the country, it was necessary to “throw them out.”

Moro explained that the deportation was part of the measures adopted by government to check the incursion of strangers into the nation and to further contain the security threat posed by Boko Haram.

According to him, it will cost about N500m to provide the manpower and gadgets needed at the borders.

He said, “Manning our international borders effectively to check illegal entry of persons is almost impossible in the nation today. We have to admit the fact that we don’t have enough manpower and equipment to have real control of the situation.

“And I admit to you that prior to the present situation we face, it used to be worse. We used to take so many things for granted until we came to the point of this daring and dire security challenge.

“Part of the measures to succeed in the task had led us to getting into partnership with the American government to procure advanced surveillance equipment for better border security. The illegal immigrants were sent out of the country by the appropriate authorities under the ministry.”

In a related development, Amnesty International has called on security forces to adhere to international human rights standards and the rule of law.

It said it would continue to document human rights abuses by the security forces and Boko Haram, and the dire situation of the people trapped in the middle.

It stated, “We will continue to call on the Nigeria government to take action to protect the population. Nigeria must adopt measures that prevent, investigate and prosecute attacks by Boko Haram, while fully respecting and ensuring human rights in accordance with Nigeria’s international obligations and commitments. The population will not be truly secure until everyone in Nigeria can be confident not only that the risk of attacks from Boko Haram has been reduced, but also that they will not face human rights violations at the hands of the very state security forces mandated with their protection.

“Unfortunately, at the moment in Nigeria we have a situation where the military are behaving like they are above the law – like they don’t have to respect the rule of law. So, in some respects, the issue is not so much which law the military are operating under, although it is vitally important that the law complies with international human rights law and standards.

Man loses his manhood after giving beggar N50 in Akure

“Wonders,” they say, “will never cease”. This was the scenario at the weekend at the Old Garage, Akure when a middle-aged woman was alleged to have used charm to take a boy’s penis.

It was gathered that the victim, Adewale Akande, a graduate of College of Education, Oro, Kwara State gave the woman who begged him for alms, N50 but five minutes later, he discovered that he was having a feeling that his manhood had disappeared.

Apparently uncomfortable with the situation, the victim, in his mid-twenties, called a traffic officer around to help him arrest the woman whom he said begged him for alms.

When brought to the Police Area Command Station at Oyemekun Road, Akure, it was learnt that the suspect first denied having collected money from the victim. But after a thorough interrogation by the Police, she confessed that she received the money from Adewale.

Meanwhile, there was tension around the police station as Wale’s family members insisted that the case be transferred to the Deji’s Palace for traditional solution.

After six hours of apprehension, the victim was taken to an undisclosed hospital where he regained his manhood.

Narrating his ordeal to “DailyPost”, Akande said he came to Akure on Tuesday with his brother, Ademola, to inform their relatives about Ademola’s marriage.

The incident, he said, happened when he was about boarding a commercial vehicle to Ilorin from Old Garage; leaving his brother, behind as he promised to leave Akure the following day, Friday.

Akande said the beggar had begged her for alms, after which he gave her N50 only to notice after five minutes that his manhood was ‘shrinking’.

He said all efforts to get help from passengers in the car proved abortive, as they mistook him for ’419′ (fraudster). The graduate said he immediately called his brother on phone before approaching traffic wardens for help.

He said, “I just saw the woman on the road. She was begging me that I should give her N50. I gave her and in the next five minutes, I saw that my body was weak and my penis became very tiny like broom”.

Ademola, his brother, confirmed the incident, saying Wale called him immediately after the incident occurred. He expressed surprise at the mysterious disappearance of his brother’s manhood, adding that but for God’s intervention, it would have been a different story.

On her part, an aunty to the victim whom the brothers had visited, Prophetess Florence Adeojo of C&S, Imole-Ayo Parish, Oke-Ijebu, Akure advised members of the public who want to give alms to give them directly to churches and not to every beggar they see on their way.

When DailyPost reporter visited the Area Commander’s office yesterday, it was discovered that the woman was still under detention, just as none of the officers were willing to speak to press on the matter.

The Police Public Relations Officer [PPRO], Mr. Wole Ogodo who confirmed that the case was taken to the Police Area Command, said the police was not really sure if the victim truly lost his manhood.

According to him, “the boy and the beggar who is an able body woman were taken to the Station and during the interrogation, the Area Commander asked if the boy has a girlfriend or someone who could help him test if he had really lost his manhood, but Adewale claimed that his girlfriend was very far from Akure and no one around could help him make the test if his manhood was still functioning.

“The Area Commander also asked from the victim the last time he had eaten, but Adewale said for the past seven days he had been fasting. The Police boss immediately directed the boy to go to the hospital for proper medical attention, believing that the victim might be suffering from psychological problem since he had not eaten for the past seven days.

“Later on, the boy returned from the hospital and confirmed that his manhood was now functioning properly. However, the woman has been warned by Police not to stay around that area again or any place to solicit for money, rather, she should look for better things to do in order to keep her soul and body together” the PPRO had confirmed.

Gov.-Chime-600x836
Briefing newsmen in Enugu on Friday, the state’s Commissioner for Information, Chuks Ugwoke, said the measure would go a long way to providing adequate water for the people.
According to him, it is also to guard against the outbreak of water borne-diseases in the state.
He explained that N300 million would be spent on the rehabilitation of the Ninth-Mile Corner Water Scheme and re-building of eight bore holes and drilling of four additional ones. He said that N49 million would be spent on procurement of water supply facilities at the proposed state Theme Park, located in the Udi Local Government Area of the state.
Mr. Ugwoke said that N48 million had been set aside for the state’s Water Corporation to procure water treatment chemicals for the purification of raw water from the Ajalli-Owa Water Scheme.

“The president will thereafter, have a South East stakeholder’s interactive meeting with stakeholders from the zone,’’ the commissioner said.

Principal flees town after impregnating Army officer’s daughter

Principal of Baptist High School, Ekinrin/Adde, in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, Mr. Ajayi Ajibulu has allegedly impregnated one of his students (undisclosed name). The secret between the Principal and the young girl was exposed after the principal’s letter via the girl to a doctor who was to carry out an abortion on her was seen by her (the girl’s) female friend.

Investigation has revealed that the girl is a daughter to a retired Army officer who was also a close friend to the principal. Sources told our reporter that it was because of the closeness that had existed between the principal and the girl’s father that she became regular in the principal’s house, leading to the pregnancy.

It was revealed that the girl was still contemplating carrying out the abortion, which would have been the third of its kind, when her friend stumbled on the letter, and quickly let ‘the cat out of the bag’. After being informed of the development, the father raised the alarm, attracting the youth of the town who dragged the principal to the king’s palace.

Oba Solomon Hambolu, the king, had advised the community to remain calm over the matter, as his palace was capable of dealing with the matter. He cautioned them not to take the law into their hands.
HotNaijaNews has also gathered that the Principal escaped from the King’s Palace after the youth had delivered him to the king, and may have fled the town already.

Over 500 Nigerians Jailed In Brazil For Drugs – Ambassador

The Nigerian Ambassador to Brazil, Mr. Vincent Okoedion, said there are over 500 Nigerians serving jail terms in Brazil for drug peddling and related offences, affirming that many Nigerians are residing in the country without proper documentation .
Ambassador Okoedion , who disclosed this in an interview in Brasilia while meeting officials of Arik Air, who were in the country to secure traffic rights from the Brazilian authorities to commence flights.
He said the high commission will continue to ensure that Nigerians in the country are engaged in legitimate business.
He said, ” We have many Nigerians who are in prison in this country. The numbers of Nigerians who are in prison in this country are about 500, including men and women. it is the group that are actually the main concern of the mission’ because we know that prison is not the place where our people should be in Brazil and what more they are the majority of Africans in prison in this country.

Brazil
“So we visit them in prison especially during the festivals that are observed in this country like Easter and Christmas. We take to them essential items that they need like toiletries mainly. So they are the subject of on going discussions between the mission and the host government. We also hold meetings with the community to let them know that they should be law abiding and that the police would not go after them if they obey the law of the land. It is only when the police see them engaging in illegal activities that the police will harass them. And then we also know that we have to a credible community leadership or association. That way, it makes it easier for us to deal with them as a group. So we can work them through their leaders. So right now we are trying to organise elections both for Nigerians as a community and Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation .”

Nigerian Churches Stink With Corruption -David-West

Former Minister of Petroleum, Professor Tam David-West, has landed a hard knock on church leaders in Nigeria, saying they reek of corruption and other abominable practices that bring shame upon Christianity as a religion.
david-west
He said this was the reason he stopped attending church services as he could not be part of a corruption-laden church as is the case in Nigeria.

As documented in the Bible, prophets and those considered close to God were dreaded by kings and rulers. This is however not so in Nigeria, as according to Professor David-West, those who should be seen as men of God have soiled their hands using proceeds from corruption and unethical activities.

The Professor of Virology spoke Thursday when he was honoured alongside other Nigerians such as the late Chief Gani Fawehinmi, former Governor of Lagos State, Lateef Jakande, a journalist, Alhaji Razaq Bamidele, and a police corporal, Azeez Arogundade, by the Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders , CACOL, in Lagos.

“I don’t go to church again because I see a lot of corruption. Many of the things I was taught in church and in mission schools have been lost and I cannot practise their modern day teachings,” he said.

Professor David-West recalled an incident some years back where a staff of Sheraton Hotel stole millions of naira from his employer and donated same to Christ Embassy church and the head of the church claimed the money was donated as tithe to the church and not to any individual.

To further buttress his anger at the church leaders, he said they now shy away from telling corrupt leaders the truth, adding that these days, “when political leaders go to church, they go with a lot of camera men.

“They kneel with pious faces while deep down, their hearts are as dark as the pot. They donate to the church thinking they can bribe God,” he said.
The former minister who was honoured with the ‘Symbol of Integrity’ award also advocated for capital punishment for election riggers in the country, saying they are the real destroyers of the country’s economy.

He noted that the Boko Haram sect was not the real problem facing the country. According to him, the problem is those who sponsor the group.
“Our President said there are Boko Haram members in his government but he has not been able to bring them to book; maybe the book has not been printed,” David-West said.

He maintained that the country had enough money to keep it going and lamented that corruption, which is now official in the country, has made a mockery of Nigeria among the comity of nations.

He warned those who have continued to steal the country blind of a special place for them in hell, warning further that if they refuse to leave government, God would visit them in the way they least expect.

“I have refused a national honour because some of those who would stand before us at the podium are thieves,” he said, adding that corruption had permeated the entire country.

“If you are working with a head of state that is corrupt, you are in trouble, because they would do everything to frustrate you,” he added.
He recalled how he was jailed for life for drinking tea and accepting a gold wrist-watch, adding that he once told the Oni of Ife that, “my sin is that I refused to sin.”

He also recalled that as minister, he had about 90 per cent of the country’s wealth in his hands, but that he remained upright in the presence of serious temptation.

Mrs. Ganiat Fawehinmi, who received the post humous award of ‘Legend of Integrity’ on behalf of her late husband, asked Nigerians not only to shun corrupt leaders, but also to publicly denounce and embarrass them.

She also commended the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Mariam Aloma Mukhtar for her reform of the judiciary, urging her not to be discouraged.

The beneficiaries commended CACOL for standing up to fight against corruption.

Man cuts off own penis during fight with girlfriend

The next time he fights with his girlfriend, he won’t be so cocky.
r-MAN-CUTS-OFF-OWN-PENIS-TAIWAN-large570
A drunk man in Jilong, Taiwan reportedly used scissors to cut off his own penis and testicles during an argument with his girlfriend, according to Chinese newspaper Kwong Wah Yit Poh, as translated by The Toronto Star Online.

The 46-year-old, whose name has not been released, reportedly flushed his love muscle down the toilet before his girlfriend rushed him to the hospital. By the time he got there, he had fallen into a coma due to blood loss, according to Rocket News 24′s translation of the Japanese-language website Big Globe News.

Doctors said that had the man not flushed his penis, they likely would have been able to reattach it, according to Big Globe News.

With only 1.2 inches of manhood left, the man is reportedly still able to urinate. He has reportedly emerged from his coma and is expected to recover.

Is this story too bizarre to be believed? Maybe, but it’s not the first time a man intentionally dismembered his member. In June 2012, a California man severed his own penis with an X-acto knife.

Transfer news: Arsenal close on Auxerre striker Yaya Sanogo

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed that the Premier League club are in ‘advanced’ talks over Auxerre starlet Yaya Sanogo.
Auxerre-v-Toulouse-Yaya-Sanogo-celeb_2675052
The highly-rated striker, 20, has scored nine goals in just 11 league appearances for the Ligue 2 outfit.

He current deal expires this summer and reports in France have claimed that he has shunned offers from a host of clubs in his homeland by agreeing a four-year deal with the Gunners.

However, Wenger has insisted a deal is not yet concluded for the France Under-21 international, but admitted it was close.

“It is in the advanced stages but it is not done,” he said, when asked about Sanogo.

If, as expected, Arsenal conclude a deal then they would be due to pay Auxerre compensation as Sanogo is under 23.

Lagos employs 70 women truck drivers

Ikeja – The Lagos State Government on Friday said it had just employed 70 women as truck drivers, as part of efforts to empower women in the state.
nigeria-peakmilk_02-300x225
The Deputy Gov., Mrs Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, announced this at a news conference in Ikeja organised to mark Gov. Babatunde Fashola`s sixth year in office.

She said that the women had been trained on driving large vehicles before they were deployed to the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) as waste truck drivers.

“We are also considering training and empowering women as Taxi drivers. We are currently examining some security risks that these women might face driving taxis.

“But we hope to partner with some hotels in the state on how we can attach some of these female taxi drivers to them, so that we can track who they are dropping off, in case there is a problem,“ she said.

Orelope-Adefulire, who oversees the Ministry of Women Empowerment, stressed that gender equality and women empowerment were top on the agenda of the Fashola administration.

She said the government had established a number of skills acquisition centres across the state, saying that thousands of women had acquired trade skills at such centres, to set up their businesses.

The deputy governor added that women entrepreneurs who were in need of tools and equipment for their trades had also been assisted by the government with such needs.

She said the government, through the ministry, had facilitated micro-credits for small-scale business women, to assist them grow their businesses.

Orelope-Adefulire said the government was making steady progress at attaining the 35 per cent Affirmative Action with the appointment of more women into top positions in the state.

“Though we are yet to attain 35 per cent Afirmative  Action, we are aggressively working towards it.Today. we have more and more women occupying top positions in government.

“68 judges, 92 magistrates and 52 Permanent Secretaries is a indeed progress. We are still working harder and we will surely surpass the 35 per cent target at the end of the day,“ she said.

The deputy governor, however, decried the growing cases of domestic violence in the state, saying that the government was taking appropriate steps to control the trend. (NAN)

Pastor:My members and I eat Indian hemp

A Pastor of a Pentecostal Church fingered for alleged kidnapping shocked detectives, as he was also arrested with bundle of Indian hemp.

General overseer of Divine Justice Church, Owerri, Imo State, Pastor Clement Ezeigbo, who is currently cooling his heels in the police Anti Kidnap Unit of the state police command, told the police: “I don’t know anything about kidnapping but I am the owner of the Indian hemp (Igbo) but the good thing is that I don’t smoke it but I use it to prepare my food. I enjoy eating food prepared with Indian hemp.”

“I don’t think there is anything wrong when you use Indian hemp to prepare your food; it gives inspiration and it makes one have sober reflection and that is why I recommend it to my Church members. I use to preach to my members against smoking it but I encourage them to cook their food with hemp. “Some of my members do prepare some delicacies with it, which they serve me. I love Indian hemp because after eating Indian hemp, it gives me inspiration, then when I mount the pulpit, you will notice the efficacy of hemp.”

Explaining what brought him to the police, he told CrimeWatch that “on the fateful day, I was in my Church, praying when the police stormed the place, claiming they were looking for some kidnappers, who used to hide their victims near my Church. I told them that I was not aware of the hideouts of kidnappers. You see, it was while searching my Church that they saw the Indian hemp. Well, I did not deny ownership of the hemp, it belongs to me; I love it.”

When he was confronted by Crime- Watch whether it was right for a man of God to indulge in using Indian hemp, he said: “Let any man show me where it was written in the bible that thou should not cook with Indian hemp.” The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mohammed Katsina, told CrimeWatch that some kidnappers were living beside the Church. He said some victims were rescued by the police, who stormed the scene. Katsina said the pastor and other accomplices took to their heels on sighting the police.

He said the police were able to arrest the pastor. According to him, when a search was conducted on the Church premises, a bundle of Indian hemp was recovered. The CP added that the police were on the trail of the runaway kidnappers, who escaped arrest.

14yr old girl killed & set on fire by boyfriend because he thought she was pregnant

Shaniesha Forbes, 14, (pictured above) was killed by her 20 year old boyfriend who then burnt her body and dumped her remains on a beach just because he thought she was pregnant.

Below is how New York Post is reporting it:
The family of the 14-year-old Brooklyn girl who was allegedly killed by her boyfriend and dumped on a beach blasted him this morning for cowardly slaying her after he thought she was pregnant.
Police had arrested Christian Ferdinand, 20, in Maine on Tuesday, where he had fled after he allegedly suffocated Shaniesha Forbes, 14, and burnt her body before dumping the remains at Gerritsen Beach.

“On the record, she wasn’t pregnant at all. As a 20-year-old man, that is something you could easily find out,” said her devastated cousin Kerry-Anne Thomas. “You had the courage and the balls to kill her and bring her body, and lay her on the beach. But you couldn’t go to the pharmacy to buy a pregnancy test to find out if it was actually true.”

Detectives yesterday drove Ferdinand back to the 63rd Precinct station house in Brooklyn, where he allegedly admitted to killing Forbes in January after coming to believe she was pregnant.

He was charged with second-degree murder, and has not been arraigned yet.

The victim’s weeping mother Sandra Price thanked the police for catching the killer, as did her grandmother Daisy Smith.

“I’m very grateful for the job that the two main detectives have done,” she said. “They did a wonderful job catching the killer and getting him for the street, and hopefully putting him away for life. That’s what I think he deserves.”

Smith said the family hadn’t been eating or sleeping since the girl’s death. “I’m so happy they caught this guy who killed my granddaughter,” she said. “There was nothing we could do, only wait…Bring him justice.”

Sources said Ferdinand suffocated the aspiring nurse — who was, in fact, not pregnant — in his apartment. He then kept her body in his home for a couple of days, sources said.

Finally, he allegedly put the corpse into a suitcase and brought it onto the beach, where he tried to get rid of it by setting it on fire.

Cops recovered the suitcase the killer used to transport Forbes’ body from his Maine hideout and also took floorboards from his former Brooklyn apartment, the sources said.

Relatives said never met Ferdinand, and was not sure how he met Forbes. Thomas speculated that they may have met through social media.

Honestly there shouldn’t have been a relationship. He was a 20-year-old man and she was a 14-year-old child,” she said. “As an adult, which he is, he should have known it was inappropriate to have any type of a relationship with a 14-year-old.”

Forbes was a student at the Academy of Young Writers in East New York.

How Sex Mate Lured Businessman Into the Hands of Kidnappers For N5million

Men be careful who you rumple o! Not all ladies who talk smooth and give you access to her body is good as she would want you to believe. We gathered that a Lagos-based businessman is now licking his wound for trusting his sex mate blindly.
Kidnap of Businessman in lagos
Below is the story of how he was lured into kidnappers den by his girlfriend…
Mr Ayodele Olaoye, a businessman, on Thursday narrated to an Ikeja High Court how his ‘babe’ conspired with others to kidnap him and collect N5 million ransom from his parents.

Ayodele was testifying at the commencement of the trial of 23-year-old Esther Phillips and six others. She is said to be the mastermind of the kidnap of Ayodele on April 22, 2012.

Ayodele, who was led in evidence by the Lagos State Attorney-General, Ade Ipaye, said that he met Esther in February, 2012. He said, “I met her at a club called Pegas in Opebi, she told me that her name was Jane and that she was a student of Lagos State University (LASU).”

There friendship grew and they were sleeping together. He said Esther asked him on April 22, 2012 to come and know her hostel in LASU, which he obliged. He carried her in his Nissan Murano SUV from a branch of Guaranty Trust Bank at Opebi, Ikeja, and they headed for LASU.

“We later picked up Nna (second accused) at Dopemu. She told me that the lady was her schoolmate. After driving for some time, they told me to stop at an isolated place because they were feeling pressed,” he said.

The witness told the court that immediately he stopped the car, three men who he identified as Okonwa, Adigwe and Ezioha entered the car through the back door.

Ayodele said they were armed with a axe and knives, adding that they dragged him to the back seat. “They took my mobile phone, wristwatch and necklace. After that, I was tied, blindfolded and taken to an unknown destination… They told me to cooperate or they will kill me. Esther specifically told me to convince my parents to pay the money or the guys will kill me,” he said.

The witness said he was incarcerated for four days, adding that the accused persons called his parents on telephone and demanded for $400,000 (N60 million) as ransom.

He said his father, Segun Olaoye, later paid N5 million to them which they shared. He said that while they were sharing the money, he sneaked outside the house, where he was being held, and escaped.

“I took a motorcycle and told him to go and drop me at my father’s office on Gowon Estate in Iyana-Ipaja. After then, I wrote a statement to the police…,” said Ayodele.

Esther is now being prosecuted alongside Patricia Nna, 26; Kingsley Okonwa, 24; Osita Adigwe, 35, and Uzochukwu Ezioha, 25.

The other accused persons are Jude Sunday, 36, and Michael Olarenwaju, 31. The accused persons – two females and five males – were arraigned before Justice Olabisi Akinlade on March 5.

They are facing a five-count charge of conspiracy, armed robbery and kidnapping. They, however, pleaded not guilty and were remanded in prison custody. The case continues…

Strange:200 Year Old Iroko Tree Kills 31 Persons,Leaves 16 Others Injured In Imo State

It was tears and anguish yesterday night in  Umudagu, Mbieri community in Mbaitoli council area of Imo state as no fewer than 31 persons have been confirmed dead following the fall of an ancestral ‘Uko’  tree estimated to have been over 200 years in existence.

big tree
The tree which fell around 8pm, Thursday night, during a rainstorm also left scores of persons injured and about 7 others either buried in the rubble or missing.
The size of the disaster was occasioned by the fact that under the tree is a location of a popular night market simply described as “Ukwu Uko market” meaning the market under the ‘Uko’ tree.
The market usually started at about 3pm everyday and terminated at about 9.30pm or 10pm.
The tree, our correspondent gathered had been a source of concern to the youths of the village who had repeatedly called for its removal to no avail. Elders of the community had described the tree as an ancestral landmark that should not be removed.

Ironically, discussion into the removal of the tree was resumed yesterday. The meeting to agree on modality and necessary appeasements to be carried out before its removal was going on in the town hall near the Ukwu Uko market, when the rain began. The meeting was then adjourned due to the rain and our source who said he was part of the meeting said, “Some of us were still on our way home when we heard the tree crashing down. On racing back to see what has happened, we met a massive carnage, a scene of blood and mangled flesh. It was a gory sight. And we tried to help as much as we can. Most of our people did not sleep a wink till this morning, as no effort was spared in saving what could be saved.”
A motorcycle operator who spoke at the scene of the disaster said he took part in the rescue and confided that, “Over 35 persons died in this tragedy, without counting those critically injured who were rushed off to the hospital. We loaded three ambulance bus-loads of corpses yesterday night, see my hands, I have not even washed it.”
About five persons were seen wailing in search of their wards who they said were at the market Thursday night but have since not been seen. Digging for those buried in the rubble yielded only more dead bodies.
The dead body of a baby estimated to be about three-year old was said to have also been recovered around 3am Friday morning. A severed leg was also left behind while the body of an aged woman was being recovered from the rubble.  A woman was however rescued alive on Friday morning and rushed off to the hospital.
Rescue efforts were hampered by the sheer size of the tree as it took a caterpillar and other heavy duty machines to move the tree to enable any substantial rescue work.
On the rescue team, were villagers, men of the National Security and Civil Defence Corps, men of the Nigerian Fire Service, some health workers and other security operatives.
The area has totally been crowded by people who came to see for themselves the size of the tragedy.

Northern Leaders Warn Jonathan: You Have Declared War

Northern elders, under the umbrella of Northern Elders Forum, NEF, have finally broke their silence on the slamming of state of emergency on three states, describing the action of President Goodluck Jonathan as an indirect declaration of war on them.

Boko Haram Battle 1
“We hereby call on the President to immediately disband the so-called Boko Haram amnesty committee, as there is no need to continue to waste public funds on a matter, whose purpose has been deliberately truncated by the very person who initiated it.”
The President’s action, which took the northern elders by surprise, came barely three weeks after Jonathan accepted a peaceful roadmap from them on how to end the Boko Haram insurgency.

Spokesman for the NEF, Prof Ango Abdullahi, who relayed the position of the group, said they were disappointed by the change of tactic by Jonathan on how to resolve the crisis in the north.

Abdullahi said: “It is very sad to see that the President has easily changed direction from dialogue and reconciliation to war in his bid to end the cycle of violence in the north.

“The volte-face by Jonathan amounts to undermining our agreement with him on peace and reconciliation and we are disturbed that he has opted for force rather than peace to end the violence.

“What the President has done has now justified the fear of those who rejected membership of the Boko Haram amnesty committee on the suspicion that he was not sincere in setting up the panel and that it was programmed to fail so as to justify military action against the north.”

Alao Akala’s S3x Mess:How he wrecked Ex-Deji of Akure’s marriage

What could possibly make a first class paramount ruler and the custodian of the tradition and customs of the enlightened people of Akure, the capital of Ondo State throw decorum and gentle-manliness, even at the height of provocation, to the wind and engage his wife in a ‘roforofo,’ fight, which led to his dethronement.
alao-akala-s3x-mess-211x300
First Weekly can authoritatively reveal the missing link in this jigsaw puzzle, which has been carefully kept away from the public since the unfortunate incident.

The ex-Deji of Akure, Prince Oluwadare Adepoju Adesina, who was then riding really high against the will of some powerful indigenes of Akure, including the Lisa, Chief Davies and who had been recommended for deposition, finally nailed his own coffin on May 30, 2011, when he personally drove himself from his palace to the popular Hospital Road residence of his estranged wife, Olori Bolanle and dragged her out of the house and gave her the beating of her life.

That was the last straw that broke the camel’s back, the state government decided to act fast to avoid a total breakdown of law and order in the town as a result of the outcry that greeted this act, so on Thursday, June 10, 2010, the almost 5-year reign of the Deji of Akure was brought to an inglorious end as he was deposed and banished from the town.

“The story that had not been told is the reason behind this strange action of the cosmopolitan man, who was then the king, having lived and worked most of his life in London, why did he end up this way, why couldn’t he keep his temper in check,” those who claimed to know revealed to us last week.

“Without trying to justify some of the actions of Prince Oluwadamilare Adepoju, while on the throne, like his penchant for picking quarrels with the high and low in public, what really irked the man was the discovery that his wife, who is now late and should not be spoken ill of, was having an affair with a governor, who was supposed to be his chief, his friend and benefactor.

“The romance between Otunba Christopher Alao Akala, who was then the governor of Oyo State and Olori Bolanle Adesina, nee Fadeyi, was something he couldn’t stomach any longer, the woman was merely supposed to be the go-between the governor and the monarch in their business dealings, nothing more than that. It was this discovery that drove the king to the extent he went, you can imagine, a whole king suffering the degradation,” said an informant.

The whole thing initially started as a rumour, but when it was finally confirmed by the person, who was always with the olori during her visits to the governor on behalf of the king, the king decided to challenge the olori, who had also initially expressed her displeasure with the purported romance between Kabiyesi and one of the wives of the late Bashorun Moshood Abiola.

She vacated the palace on the grounds that Prince Adesina was becoming more of a stranger to her since he started dating another woman, forgetting the fact that the man was even married before he came back home from London to contest for the throne and only met Bolanle during the contest and the Owo-born lady stuck with him till he was made king and she also performed all the rites as the olori.

Our source disclosed that the path of ex-governor, Akala and the kabiyesi crossed, when a mutual friend of the king, while in London, introduced the king to Akala. The mutual friend was a close aide of the governor.

It was during the tenure of Dr. Olusegun Agagu, and the monarch, who was not too comfortable with the policy of the Agagu government on the Buy, Operate and Transfer policy of the model market built in his community by the government, felt he had been shut out of the deal as he was only guaranteed peanuts, was not happy and he told those close to him, including the aide to former governor Akala, who promised to facilitate a meeting between the governor and the monarch.

“When they finally met, Akala gave the monarch a contract in Oyo State to supply bullet proof safe and if I can recollect, the first pick was about N70 Million, this was to buy bullet proof safes; the kabiyesi started enjoying the working arrangement and was very visible in Ibadan, the seat of power,” a source divulged.

With time, Akala advised the monarch to put someone close to him forward as a front as it was not good for a whole monarch to be seen waiting for payments.

They both agreed on the choice of Olori Bolanle and another close aide called Collins.
The monarch was to later bestow a chieftaincy title on Alao Akala for his role in his life; he made him the Basorun Atunluto of Akure at an elaborate ceremony in Akure Town.

Not long after this, the visits of Olori Bolanle and Collins to Ibadan became regular to pick-up for kabiyesi and on one of such visits, former governor Akala told his aides to always check the olori into the presidential suites of the hotel and put Collins in a standard room.

Our source told us that one thing led to another and the governor started paying very late night visits to the Olori in her hotel room, and they were reportedly all over one another.

On one or two occasions, Collins was heard complaining that ‘ori ade will not like this kind of arrangement,’ but all fell on the deaf ears. Our source revealed that it was Collins, who spilled the beans to his boss, kabiyesi, on the matter and since this development, the relationship nose-dived and both men started avoiding each other, but none could summon the courage to confront the other, either for the king to accuse Akala of sleeping with his olori or for the governor to accuse the kabiyesi and Collins of trying to tarnish his image.

The matter was like this until Olori Bolanle reportedly had a strong alibi in the kabiyesi romance with the late M.K.O Abiola’s wife and hurriedly moved out of the palace.

While the king was grumbling about his plight, the olori was said to be unconcerned and continued the business on her own, she was living well and even bought herself a jeep, it was this that sparked the demon in the king to put an end to the whole matter in his own way, which unfortunately cost him his throne.

“I can confirm to you that the last contract she got was executed by this so-called aide of former governor Akala and one Femi Babalola, Jogor, a politician, who is said to be interested in the seat of power in the state,” said an insider.

Jogor was the consultant, Olori Bolanle was to have made a cool N10 Million from the deal, but on her dying bed, she was told the money accruable to her was N6M, the Olori was not happy, but she could do very little from her sick bed, but we understand she told her family to make sure they collect the difference of N4M in case of any eventuality.

“You cannot cheat the dead, so if these Akala men have conscience, they will come and do what is right before it is late,” a source maintained.

Laide Bakare sleeps around,I want DNA test for my daughter

Nollywood actress,Laide Bakare dumped her husband,Olumide for another man.

laide-bakare
A chat with Encomium weekly from his base in Washington district,Columbia, USA, Laide’s enstranged hubby, Olumide speaks;
Your wife, laide released a statement that she dumped you for another businessman, Mr. Tunde Oriowo because she realised that you were legally married to another wife who had given you two children, not actually single as you told her when the relationship started?

How could I have married two women legally in Nigeria? I should be in Jail by now because there is a law that condemns such an act. How come she has not gone to court instead of media for seperation? Seperation can only come through the court.

American government gave Laide Green card because she is legally married to me, we had a court marriage in Nigeria also. When she was supposed to be a faithful wife, she would leave her matrimonial home to stay with married men in Lagos, all in the name of being actress or career lady. I couldn’t monitor her because i am not always in Nigeria. In fact, there was a time she left our baby, Similoluwa with me for eight months in America in the name of career lady, i had become a nursing father. I have been trying to manage my home the way i could.

Are you Insinuating she cheated on you?
Yes, Of course! She did both in the past and now, all in the name of being career woman.

If she is cheating on you both in the past and now, can you be sure of your child’s paternity?

I have made up my mind that my doctor should begin the process of DNA of our daughter to know who is the father, whether Mr. Tunde Oriowo or myself. As we speak, she brought Similoluwa back to Nigeria illegally and as we speak, the child is under her mother’s care.

SUPER EAGLES PLAYER, YUSUF AYILA’S WIFE IN JUJU SCANDAL +Exclusive pictures of charms found in her wardrobe

Contrary to reports in the media that Super Eagles star and Orduspor midfielder, Yusuf Ayila, abandoned his wife and kids in Ukraine and eloped with a girlfriend, latest information reaching us has it that there may be more to it.

imagen
We were actually able to get Ayila’s reaction through his media rep during the week and his revelation was rather shocking as the footballer accused his wife, Gbemisola of allegedly wanting to kill him and inherit his properties.
Hear how he narrates to EMAG:
‘Firstly, I’ll like to state categorically that Gbemisola is not my legal wife as widely reported. She is the mother of my two kids. We met years back and started a casual date.
The trouble started when I asked her to bring my children for holiday in Ukraine. One day, while I lived with her, I opened Gbemi’s wardrobe in Ukraine and found different charms, including a snake inside a bottle filled with gin.
It was a confirmation of the feelers I got from family and friends that she is fetish and had been using charms on me. I felt uncomfortable living under the same roof with her. In view of this development, I told her to return to Nigeria, to which she refused. At that point, I told her I can’t cope with her bad habit anymore; that she had to go back to Nigeria or I’ll leave the house for her.
imagez
Meanwhile, before seeing the charms in her wardrobe, she’s always been at loggerheads with my mother for no concrete reason. I had to leave the house in Ukraine to get another apartment when she refused to leave.
imagec
Yet it never stopped me from paying the house rent, even after my departure to Orduspor, Turkey, my club. I kept paying the children’s school fees and other bills and later discovered that her Visa will expire in a few months’ time.
I sent her a mail asking her to leave Ukraine and go back to Nigeria since she hadn’t anything concrete doing and yet again she refused. I sent her another mail threatening to stop paying the rent in Ukraine by the end of April.
When she refused to leave, I sent someone to collect her passport lest she tarnishes my image and career.
I started hearing some unimaginable stories of her escapades with men each time I visited Nigeria, but I kept my cool. She was also reported to be having an affair with a popular Fuji star who also denied the allegation.
imagev
She had on several occasions connived with some people to kill me, which I survived by the grace of God. For the records, I have a recorded phone conversation of that”.
According to Ayila, he gives Gbemisola 1 Million Naira as monthly allowance. As for the said mistress, Ayila defended that he’s now legally married to her.
He described the new woman as a very responsible, God fearing lady who is his wife and not a mistress, as claimed by his estranged wife.

Teacher Arrested For Doing “Bad Things” To Female Student

A 24-year-old teacher, Phillip Ebong, was arrested on Wednesday by the Gowon Estate Police Division, Akowonjo, Lagos, for allegedly doing “things” to a 14-year-old pupil (name withheld) and later banning her from attending his classes.

TEACHER Phillip Ebong
“On repeated occasions, Ebong invited the victim to the staff room informing her of his desire to have an intimate relationship with her. Consequently, the victim became a regular visitor to the staff room during break periods…”
Ebong, who teaches Physics and Chemistry at the Dee Jewels International College, Gowon Estate, Egbeda, was arrested during school hours after a complaint was lodged at the police station by Spaces for Change, a non-governmental organisation on youth development, on behalf of the pupil and her guardian, Mrs. Theresa Amaechi.

The petition revealed that Ebong began harassing the victim from the first day of her enrolment in the school in January 2013.

The petition read, “On such visits [to the staff room], he made sexual advances to her which often involved kissing and hugging. Several times, Ebong followed her home, waiting at the gate to avoid being seen by her guardian.”

The petition alleged that under much pressure from Ebong, the victim eventually invited the teacher to her guardians’ home while they were away.

Ebong was alleged to have cajoled her to expose her private part, after fondling her breasts and kissing her.

It was said the harassment became too persistent, that the victim allegedly earned the title, “Uncle Phillip’s wife,” among her classmates and friends.

Amaechi told Punch that “The victim is a timid girl. I did not know the extent of the harassment she was facing until she opened up to me last Friday. Earlier, she had told me Ebong was asking her for a relationship and I told her to reject his advances. I thought it would stop at that.

“I was shocked when she told me last week that she was no longer interested in staying in the science class; she wanted to switch to the arts and when I asked why, she said it was because Ebong had banned her from his classes.

“Apparently, she had told him that I was aware that he had asked her for a sexual relationship. The revelation angered him. He even went as far as threatening that she would fail her examinations,”
Executive Director of Spaces for Change, Mrs. Victoria Ibezim-Ohaeri, said Amaechi came to her with the case on the same day her ward confided in her.

She said, “We are prepared to seek legal redress in the court should the school and police fail to investigate this matter and exercise full disciplinary action against Ebong. Our investigation has also shown that there are other students currently being abused by this same Ebong.”

When confronted, Ebong denied. He blamed the entire situation on his interest in his students’ success:
“I am close to all my students; that is what I was taught in the College of Education that a teacher had to be friendly. I just took an interest in the victim because I noticed she was not taking her homework seriously. All this talk of my touching and kissing her, they are all lies. I admit going to her house but it was because I wanted to see her guardian.”

D’Prince parts ways with manager, Teebillz

Mavin artist D’Prince has amicably parted ways with his manager, Teebillz, who is also Tiwa Savage’s manager and fiance. The two who were in the UK two weeks ago to shoot two videos for Tiwa, ended their business relationship as soon as they returned from the UK.

D’Prince announced on Twitter a few days ago that he is now being managed by Sunday Are, who also manages singer Omawumi. A source told me Teebillz wants to reduce the number of artists he manages and concentrate on other projects.
“Teebillz didn’t really have time to commit to managing him. He wants to concentrate on the business management of his label and leave artist management alone for now. He’s busy with too many projects and they decided D’Prince should move to Mr Are”

MUST READ! Fashola: Porting From Admirable Achievements To Peeving Policies

Nigeria has 36 federating states with one man atop the governance of each. I admire a few of them for their courage, diligence, forthrightness, hardwork, vision among other delectable traits and one of those is Lagos state governor Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN.

Fashola and Lagos Development
‘[But] in recent months, the goodwill Governor Fashola enjoys has been plummeting. This is the honest truth and his aides as well as government officials should be bold to voice out.’
We like(d) him because he obviously knows what it means to occupy a Government House. Also his grasp of such a complex city confirm that he knew what he set out to accomplish. In a number of instances, BRF has proven that he isn’t one of the many accidental public servants in the country. His beautification campaign, education and healthcare projects and markedly the restoration of sanity in hitherto black spots; prominent is the cleansing of Oshodi which till date amazes everyone.

I recollect Fashola’s address at the commissioning of the Cele Bridge on Oshodi-Apapa expressway. That day, he told everyone in attendance that he dreamt of constructing the link as a little boy. According to him, there used to be an improvised wooden bridge there decades ago and that some miscreants would demand for money before pedestrians were allowed passage. Saddened by the suffering, he promised himself to fix the situation once he has the clout to do so. The bridge erected at the cost of N1.1 billion is three years old.

In view of the above story and others, the thought that my hero would suddenly become insensitive to the plight of millions of struggling citizens is puzzling.

I arrived in Lagos from Abuja on the first day of May and I stayed for two weeks – busy weeks. It is the classic official trip where you hardly have time for personal parade. Usually when I’m in Lagos and have appointments on the Island (the highbrow places that is), I move round in a chattered cab. My chauffer is Mr. Amos, one of the many erstwhile fans of Fashola. As he took me to my destinations throughout the period, he brought me up to speed, narrating what the Centre of Excellence has become. He spoke of neglect in his area of Ndike/Obawole in Ifako-Ijaiye local government; the high-handedness of the many of the state-owned agencies; the bogus rates transporters are forced to pay et cetera. Amos further lamented the poor state of roads in many parts of the state including the prestigious Victoria Island and Ikoyi, his usual work-route.

Commenting on the issue of ‘Okada’, the hustling father of four, who although supported the ban, alleged that once it is time for elections at whatever level in the state, the administration systematically goes soft on the riders so as to garner their votes.

At a point during his complaint, one would think that the man was paid to castigate the helmsman of Lagos. To convince me his grouse was genuine, he cited instances as though foreseeing I would someday write about it. He added that judging by the present, more adversity await Lagosians, especially the common man. Days later, Amos prophecy came to be reality.

On May 12, I attended an event at Opebi area of Ikeja, the capital of Lagos. It ended around 9pm and unfortunately, there was no luxury of a private car on this occasion. I walked up to the entrance of Salvation Road, about a kilometer from the popular Adebola House. Within the next twenty minutes, only three buses stopped to offload and load waiting passengers. A glance showed we were about two dozen; a few others joined intermittently though.

As the frustration grew, an elderly woman was the first to protest discernibly: “All these Keke dey strike?” she asked rhetorically. A middle-aged man in the crowd soon announced that the state government just banned tricycles from the many parts of the metropolis. Reacting, a stranded lady hissed with visible repugnance. She was worried that commuters are now at the mercy of lawless danfo drivers and hoodlums operating in non-public vehicles, disguised as Taxis. And so a public dialogue started; a bus-stop turned into one of the several agents of socialization.

In recent months, the goodwill Governor Fashola enjoys has been plummeting. This is the honest truth and his aides as well as government officials should be bold to voice out. In case they do not know, enjoying AC’d official cars, offices and millions in personal bank accounts yet ignoring the sorrows inflicted on Lagosians is a great disservice. But the questions is: In this type of clime, why would anyone leading a municipal of over twenty million people force tricycles out of districts that are not highways? Hasn’t Baba Fash successfully punctured the promise of a better welfare for the populace?

The governor has two vital years left on his contract and I wish he uses it wisely. He does not need a strategist to inform him that his policies henceforth will affect the decision of the electorate in 47 months; he does not need a soothsayer to predict that this latest order will part of the presupposition upon which hundreds of thousands of residents will decide whether (or not) to support his ‘All Progressives Congress’ platform in 2015.

A personal friend is of the view that the enormous accolades showered on Fashola over the years is probably making him feel cool and acting up; I cannot agree more. But then, one believes that the administration is fully aware that succor is what the people desired when they voted en masse in 2011, not untold hardship.

NUC Names 41 Illegal Universities

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has unveiled the identities of the illegal “universities” with known addresses operating in the country. The commission disclosed this yesterday at the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related Offences Commission (ICPC) headquarters during a joint press conference on the activities of the operators of the illegal “universities” across the country.

According to a release signed by the NUC deputy director (legal), Moses Awe, and made available to LEADERSHIP, 41 illegal universities have so far been identified with fixed addresses and have been published on NUC website.

Meanwhile, the ICPC also disclosed at the briefing that it had commenced a nationwide joint operation with security operatives, beginning yesterday, to close down the premises of the 41 identified illegal “universities”, with the aim of seizing their properties, making arrest of operators and prosecuting the culprits.

The culprits were allegedly either using a fake name or illegally operating a satellite campus in the name of an approved and known institution.

The suspects included University of Accountancy and Management Studies in Lagos, Concept College London with a campus in Gwarinpa, Abuja; Imo State University operating in a primary school in Garki, Abuja; a fake campus of Imo State University in Asaba, Temple University in Orozo, Abuja; Volta University College in Aba; Irish University Business School London anchored by Lobi Business School in Makurdi; Open University of Nigeria, Wuse II, Abuja; Mr. David Lornem New Idea Management at NNDC Building, Kaduna; another Imo State University satellite campus operated by Lucia Group of Schools at Ibusa; Volta University College in Aba; Abia State University study centre; Triumphal University in Omugbo town; Rockville University, Uburu, Royal University, Abakaliki; University of Caribbean in Ikorodu, Lagos; University of Education Ghana with centres in Lagos and Awka; Irish University Business School in Apapa, Lagos; Christ Message International University, Isolo, Lagos; University of Nigeria study centres in Surulere and Ikorodu, Lagos; University of Ibadan campus in Lagos, among others.

According to Prof. Olu Aina, who stood in for the ICPC chairman, Barrister Ekpo Nta, the action is the first in the series of implementing the outcome of an ongoing ICPC/NUC University System Study and Review (USSR), for which ICPC sought and obtained a Federal High Court warrant to clamp down on the illegal institutions.

LEADERSHIP had reported that the commission, through its chairman on Thursday last week in Calabar, had announced the discovery of 67 illegal universities nationwide with a warning that it would soon commence crackdown on the promoters of such illegal institutions.

“The activities of these illegal operators have impacted negatively on the mental, psychological and economic wellbeing of many young Nigerians and their parents. The institutions constitute an embarrassment to the government and remain a monumental corruption of the education system.

“Therefore, an inter-agency task team comprising ICPC, the NUC, the police, the State Security Service and the Nigeria Civil Defence Corps will continue the exercise until all corrupt practices and impunity associated with the physical existence of such illegal institutions cease completely,” Aina said.

The ICPC said a lot of the “universities” do not have fixed addresses while some have become itinerant in order to beat the law, adding that those being closed down were established in contravention of the law which states that any application for the establishment of a university must be done through the NUC only. The anti-graft agency therefore called on members of the press, civil society organisations, parents and prospective students for cooperation on information sharing in order to check the menace.

The commission also advised school proprietors to be wary of lending or hiring out their facilities for these “after school hours and weekend” institutions to avoid having their premises sealed off or seized.

For his part, Prof. Shola Akinrinade, who represented the NUC executive secretary at the briefing, also denied insinuations that the commission had earlier granted temporary approval to the illegal institutions to operate. He said “the NUC does not grant temporary approval or licence to operate a university,” hence the publication of legal and illegal institutions on its website.

ICPC storms Benue, arrests proprietor, registrar of fake varsity
Meanwhile, the ICPC also yesterday stormed Markurdi, Benue State capital, and arrested the registrar and proprietor of Lobi Institute of Management and Technology for allegedly awarding fake degree certificates. The anti-graft team gathered that the school was affiliated to a foreign university called Irish University Business School in London

A statement from the commission’s resident consultant (media), Folu Olamiti, said the proprietor of the institution, Dr Peter Ahemba, and the registrar, Chihi Joseph, were later quizzed by operatives with relevant materials retrieved from them that would help in their investigation. Ahemba however denied ever been affiliated with any foreign university but said that the school only awards certificate to its students.

Speaking with newsmen in Makurdi, ICPC deputy director, education department, Mr Muhammed  Ashiru Baba, said that the commission was working in line with section 6 of the ICPC Act.

He lamented the rising rate of fake universities in the country, stating that four of such illegal universities were in Benue State axis and assured of the efforts of the commission to rid the country of the illegal universities so as to save education from total collapse.

The team which also visited the North-Central University based in Otukpo discovered that the proprietors of the university had closed the institution about five years ago. Before closure, the institution operated in a private secondary school called Ujor Memorial College in Otukpo with dilapidated buildings, while reports indicated that no fewer than 5,000 students were attending the school, most of them from the eastern part of the country.
