BlackBerry Q5 For Emerging Markets Announced

gsmarena_002

The start of the BlackBerry Live 2013 annual conference today in Orlando, USA, saw the announcement of the BlackBerry Q5 – a QWERTY device for emerging markets.

gsmarena_0011
The Blackberry Q5 revolves around a 3.1-inch touchscreen and one of BlackBerry’s classic physical QWERTY keyboards, which they are so proud of. The screen has an unusual resolution of 720 x 720px – the same as on the Q10, but this time it’s an LCD unit. Inside the BlackBerry Q5 there’s a dual-core 1.2Ghz CPU and 8 gigs worth of storage. There’s a microSD slot to expand that, but the battery is not removable.
The new BlackBerry Q5 will be available in selected markets in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia (including the Asia Pacific region), and Latin America, with availability beginning in July. The smartphone will be offered in black, white, red and pink.
Another announcement that came from the today’s keynote is that the BlackBerry 10.1 update is now ready to seed to the BlackBerry Z10 (later this month in the US). Not only that, but starting today, Skype will be available to all users who update their Z10s to v10.1.

LG Flexible OLED Phones Coming This Year.

The lighter, the better. The thinner, the more appealing. These seem to be the trends in consumer electronics, something that we observe in the latest gadgets released. From laptops to monitors to tablets to mobile phones – what catches the eye of consumers are those units that are sleek and sexy. And speaking of sleek and sexy, flexible displays are well on their way.
flexible-display-1024x546
Talk about flexible gadgets has been going around for quite some time, with Samsung leading the pack – well, initially. Samsung has taken the point position in talking about development of flexible displays, but recent rumors indicate that another brand might get there before Samsung. Apple has also been rumored to be looking at flexible displays. With the announcement that LG flexible OLED phones are coming out by the end of the year being made, Samsung and all other manufacturers need to up their pace.

The announcement about LG flexible OLED phones was made during a call which was mainly focused on the company’s financial results. As those things go, other tidbits of information are also doled out, perhaps to tantalize the news-hungry public.

Early this year, it looked like Samsung was going to beat everyone else, with the flexible OLED phone prototype being shown off during the CES. We haven’t really seen or heard anything more concrete that that since then.

As for LG, it looks like they are upping the ante by promising us something to look forward to for Christmas. We have to be realistic about the LG flexible OLED phones, though. Assuming that the manufacturer can deliver on its promise, we also need to realize that current technology (circuit boards, etc.) will not be able to handle devices that actually bend. Still, this is definitely the first step to those devices that used to be only stuff from science fiction.

Are you enticed by the thought of flexible OLED phones? Will that tempt you to switch brands if LG pulls this off?

iOS 7 comes with a major redesign and it will launch on time.

Apple’s iOS 7 operating system update is expected to be shown off for the first time during the keynote at WWDC 2013, but a recent report suggested the platform’s launch may be delayed. Apple engineers are reportedly working on a major overhaul of iOS’s user interface, and it is seemingly taking longer than expected to refine and “flatten” the interface. According to multiple reports from reporters with nearly impeccable track records, however, Apple has pulled engineers away from OS X to help work on iOS 7 and the new mobile OS update will launch on time.

skydrive-ios
“Yes, yes — it’s essentially a repeat of the iPhone/Leopard scenario,” an unnamed source told AllThingsD’s John Paczkowski. “Not as much of a fire drill, though. It will ship on time.” The source was referring to Apple’s decision in 2007 to have OS X engineers help with the development of “iPhone OS” in order to ensure that the first iPhone would ship on time.
In a subsequent report, The Loop’s Jim Dalrymple confirmed that iOS 7 will indeed launch on time. The new OS is expected to become available to developers following Apple’s WWDC 2013 keynote on June 10th, and to the public in or around September alongside the release of Apple’s next iPhone, the iPhone 5S.
Multiple reports suggest iOS 7 will feature a major redesign that removes much of the skeuomorphic design elements and textures in previous versions of iOS and replaces them with a flatter and more modern user interface. According to one recent report, the new look of iOS 7 will be no more difficult to use than current versions, though its look may be “unsettling” to longtime iOS users.

Globacom signs $500M network expansion agreement with ZTE

Leading Telecommunications Company, Globacom on Monday took its network expansion project a notch higher as it signed a $500 million network modernisation and expansion contract with leading telecom vendors, ZTE Corporation.
TALABI JITUBOH 4
The Company had last Friday signed a $750 million deal with Huawei Technologies to massively expand the huge capacity of the Glo network.

Speaking at the formal signing of the  Memorandum of Understanding with ZTE in Lagos on Monday, The Group Chief Operating officer of Globacom, Mr. Mohamed Jameel, stated that the contract was part of the huge nationwide network expansion and modernisation project to make communication on its network a very smooth experience.

“We are here today to sign an MOU with ZTE as part of our expansion plan to modernise every aspect of our network and this is expected to result in much improved services”, Jameel added
He said that, “With the planned expansion, Globacom’s network capacity will increase in many folds, thus enabling it to carry high level of data in addition to other improvements in voice services”.
Jameel said that the company’s extensive network expansion plan is another commitment on the part of Globacom towards providing better GSM services for its numerous subscribers
The Glo GCOO stated further that Glo network will continue to bring in latest technologies from every part of the world to improve telecommunication services for millions of its subscribers in Nigeria and in West Africa.

He thanked Glo subscribers for staying with the Network, adding that the company will continue to make GSM services affordable to them all.

Also speaking at the occasion, The Managing Director of ZTE, Mr. Zenghong Ma stated that Glo-ZTE’s relationship dates back to five years, adding that the new cooperation

between the two companies wouldl signal a new  era that would provide innovative solution in 2G &3G expansion and upgrading that will enhance the Glo network qualities.

Mobile Number Portability takes off today.

Nigerian Communication Commissions (NCC) as flagged of Mobile Number Portability (MNP).It takes off today. You can now change from one network to another and still retain your number.
NCC
NCC has outlined what subscribers should do to effectively utilize the benefits of the system.

Mobile Number Portability makes it possible for a subscriber to migrate from one network – may be due to poor services – to another which he/she feels can offer better services, without losing his/her original phone number.

Expectedly, the service will give the telecoms consumers the freedom of choice, redefine competition and allow subscribers the opportunity to use only one phone and operate on the platform of their choice.

The service will also impose cutting-edge responsibility on the operators who will now ensure their quality of service is good enough to retain the confidence of their subscribers.
However, the regulator has hinted the subscribers that the programme is just beginning and will not provide the ‘magic wand’ to address all the problems of the industry immediately.
NCC, at the weekend, said that technical hitches may be expected within the first few days of the service launch, but implored subscribers to show understanding. It also advised Nigerians to access its website for detailed information on MNP.

The Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Dr. Eugene Juwah, noted that subscribers were expected to abide by certain rules to give the system a smooth take off. “The following are very important: As a subscriber, you can port (change) to another operator. However, you will be restricted from porting (changing) your number to a third operator within 90 days of a previous port; you can port your number as many times as you like in a given year. This means there is a 90-day restriction before your next port”, he said.
Just like it used to happen in SIM swap at the early days of GSM in the country, subscribers may port the numbers of other people for no genuine reasons and to forestall this, Juwah said subscribers would be required to submit certain documents. “To move your number to a new mobile operator, you need to bring proof of identity such as identity card, passport or driving licence or an officially-validated photographic identity document. Also, the mobile number you wish to port must be validly registered.”

He also gave hints that subscribers can port their numbers at any customer care office, retail shop or outlet of their chosen new service provider and meet with the authorized sales person to request to port their number.
He also informed the subscribers that porting is not available by telephone, online or other electronic means.
Meanwhile, subscribers wishing to change their operators to a preferred network are expected to terminate service with their existing service provider before initiating porting with the new service provider.

In Nigeria’s model of porting, Juwah said that both post-paid and pre-paid customers will be able to port their numbers but however, added that once the porting process is complete, postpaid customers are required to settle their outstanding bills to their previous service provider including any early termination fees.
He also warned that old service providers are permitted to use any legal measures to recover any outstanding charges from a subscriber.
Meanwhile, in compliance with the directive by NCC that all mobile operators be ready for the commencement of the exercise today, almost all the mobile operators in the country have expressed readiness to fall in line with the MNP from take off.

Globacom said it was fully ready to begin the implementation of mobile number portability.
Group Operating Officer of the company, Mr Mohammed Jameel, said that “in terms of system readiness, Glo has completed the procurement and implementation of the network signal routing system (STP) and the porting process or gateway management system which is the first to be commissioned in the country and now completely ready for MNP service. The upgrade and customization of the network systems, the IT systems, the billing systems that will handle mediation and fraud management and the value added systems (VAS) have also been completed”.

Jameel added that the company‘s technical and operational teams had worked assiduously to ensure that the network is in a perfect state of preparedness to enable a smooth transition for those who are interested in porting on the Glo network.
“We put in place a functional number portability gateway (NPG) and the first to ensure an all-call query signal transport point (STP) system which are major technical requirements for the successful take-off of mobile number portability on any network”, he said.

Also, MTN Nigeria at the weekend expressed its readiness to comply with the NCC’s directive as the MNP takes off today.
MTN’s Corporate Services Executive, Akinwale Goodluck, said the company has put systems in place to make MNP a reality for mobile phone users in Nigeria who are eager to join the country’s most expansive network.
“We have made all the necessary investment in infrastructure and manpower to make MNP a reality. We are confident that at the commencement date, we will be absolutely ready. “ Goodluck added.

Meet HTC One:The best Android smartphone on the planet

The smartphone that changes everything is now available for purchase.

htc-one-review

The HTC One is unquestionably the best Android smartphone on the market right now, and it is available for purchase beginning Friday from both AT&T and Sprint. T-Mobile will then launch the sleek new smartphone next Wednesday. The HTC One release comes at a time when HTC absolutely needs a successful launch to help stop the bleeding. Unfortunately, the One has just over a week on store shelves at AT&T and Sprint before Samsung’s Galaxy S4 launches and draws away the spotlight.
BGR reviewed AT&T’s version of the HTC One earlier this month and called it the closest thing to a no-compromise smartphone the world has ever seen.
The phone is available now starting at $199.99 from both AT&T and Sprint. Beyond carrier stores, the phone can also be purchased in stores and online from Best Buy, RadioShack, Walmart, Target, Amazon.com, Costco, Car Toys, Sam’s Club, HSN.com and HTC.com.

The Gaming Future is Already Here.

What do you get when you combine a 3D virtual reality headset with a passive omnidirectional treadmill? The future of gaming, today. Virtual reality accessory startup Virtuix on Thursday posted a demo video of its upcoming Omni — a “natural motion interface for virtual reality applications” — being used in conjunction with the Oculus Rift 3D virtual reality headgear.

gfame

The video showcases the killer combination being used to play a first-person shooter and the result is mind-blowing.
The user becomes fully immersed in the game, using Virtuix’s passive treadmill to move and a gun-like controller to fire on enemies. Then, the Oculus Rift adds an immersive virtual reality experience thanks to its dual head-mounted displays that provide a 110-degree viewing angle.
The experience offered by the Omni and Rift is something next-generation video game consoles like the PlayStation 4 and Microsoft’s upcoming next-generation Xbox obviously can’t even come close to competing with out of the box. A head-mounted 3D virtual reality device coupled with an omnidirectional passive treadmill places the user inside the game. The gamer can walk, run, turn and look around as if he or she is inside the complex new world created by each video game.
The Oculus Rift, which began as a crowd-funded project on Kickstarter, is now available for preorder and Virtuix is currently preparing a Kickstarter campaign to help fund the Omni.

INNOVATION: You can now send money on Facebook using GTBank

Guaranty Trust Bank Plc has yet again raised the service bar for Nigerian banks with the unveiling of its ‘Social Banking’ service on Facebook which allows the public open GTB accounts via their Facebook account.

gtbank
The new offering which is the first of its kind by any Nigerian Bank allows GTBank Social Account holders transfer money, purchase airtime, pay bills, and confirm their account balance on Facebook.
Speaking at the launch of the social banking platform, the Managing Director and Chief Executive of the bank, Mr Segun Agbaje said the bank is committed to ensuring its stakeholders perform financial transactions at their convenience and would continue to introduce safe and novel alternative channels for them to do so.

He further confirmed that the Social Account is different from having a regular GTBank account as it enables people perform banking activities like money transfers, airtime purchases and bills payments while on Facebook.
Agbaje reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to discovering new ways of decongesting the banking halls without excluding people from its operations.
According to him, “the way to decongesting banking halls is not through excluding people but providing innovative platforms to better service for our customers.”
He however added that the bank would further spread its wings across the country with an additional 25 to 30 traditional and e-branches before the end of the year. Guaranty Trust Bank plc. has been at the forefront of industry innovations within the Nigerian financial services sector. The Bank was the first to see social media as a viable means to reach its stakeholders and presently has over 950,000 Facebook fans; the largest for any African bank.
The Bank’s other recent introductions include GTBank Mobile Money, a highly secure application that allows customers and non GTBank customers perform transfers and payments from their mobile phones, a ‘FastTrack’ banking system that allows customers withdraw money within the Bank’s branches using their debit cards, the GTCrea8 eSavers virtual account for undergraduates and the GTBank e-Account for salary earners, which enables them conduct all their banking activities without having to visit a physical bank branch.
In addition, the Bank’s internet banking platform is one of the most robust in the industry. The channel supports a wide array of transactions such as bills payments, own and third party transfers and foreign exchange transfers to any bank account in the world. The Bank’s alternative banking channels were recently given a Payment Card Industry Standards Council (PCISSC) certification, implying that the channels meet acceptable technical and operational requirements to prevent credit card fraud, hacking and other security vulnerabilities.

Photo: Samsung Unveils 6.3in Galaxy Mega Smartphone

Samsung has unveiled the biggest smartphone to date – the Galaxy Mega, which features a 6.3in (16cm) screen.
samsung-galaxy-188x300
The firm suggested its size made it ideal for watching videos or running two apps alongside each other.

Samsung helped popularise the so-called “phablet” category – in which phones approach tablet dimensions – with its original 5.3in Galaxy Note in 2011.

That proved more popular than many expected, but one analyst suggested the latest device might be a step too far.

Samsung is marketing the Android-powered handset as having a high-definition screen – however, a spokesman was unable to confirm whether it supported 720p or the “full HD” 1080p resolution.

Another South Korean firm, Pantech, currently lays claim to offering the biggest “full HD” smartphone with its 5.9in Vega No 6 which was announced in January.

China’s Huawei had previously boasted having the biggest largest-screened 720p smartphone with its 6.1in Ascend Mate.

Samsung also makes the Galaxy Note 8.0. Some versions of this 8in-screened device feature an HSPA+ radio allowing them to make calls, but the machine is being marketed as a tablet with phone functionality rather than the other way round.

‘Too cumbersome’

Samsung suggested that, despite its dimensions, the Galaxy Mega was still small and light enough – at 199g (0.44lb) – to fit into users’ pockets and be used with one hand.

However, the firm is hedging its bets by offering a smaller 5.8in-screened version as an alternative.

Both will go on sale in May, with Europe and Russia the first regions to be offered the devices.

Tech consultancy Davies Murphy Group said that within the Android market there had been a notable shift towards people wanting to buy a single device rather than both a smartphone and tablet.

However, its principal technology analyst, Chris Green, suggested that at 6.3in it would be a “folly” for most users to swap their current handsets for the larger of the two Galaxy Megas.

“There is genuine demand for larger smartphones – the problem is at what point does a smartphone turn into a tablet,” he told the BBC.

“When you’ve got this up against your head you’d have to argue you’re using a tablet and not a smartphone – it’s definitely going to compromise its functionality because it’s simply too big and too cumbersome to use as a traditional telephone device.

“But ignoring the phone functionality, as far as the rest of the smart device goes it looks quite phenomenal.”

Samsung was the most popular smartphone maker in 2012 accounting for 30.3% of all shipments, according to analysts at IDC.

Its rival Apple – whose largest handset has a 4in screen – came in second with a 19.1% market share.

Microsoft will unveil next-gen Xbox in May.

Microsoft reportedly has plans to unveil its next-generation Xbox video game console during a press conference in May.

microsoft-ces-booth

The new console was previously expected to be revealed during a special event in April but Microsoft watcher Paul Thurrott now reports that the press conference has been pushed back to May 21st. The Verge then claimed to have independently confirmed the date in a follow-up report. Preliminary details are expected at the May 21st event and then a full unveiling will reportedly follow just a few weeks later at the E3 gaming conference in June. Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox is expected to launch ahead of the holidays this year.

PlayStation 4 Will Launch Globally this year

It’s good news for gamers worldwide as the PlayStation 4 is getting set set to launch internationally this year, according to Gamestop.
gaming-ps4-new-playstation-console-controller-01-300x336
The retailer’s executive vice president of strategy business and brand development, Michael Hogan confirmed the console release plan in a recent conference call with investors.

“We know that Sony will introduce the PlayStation 4 globally in 2013, but we are still waiting to see what Microsoft’s final plans are.”

The comments from GameStop align with other European retailers that predict the PS4 to arrive in 2013, and that it will be priced around £300.

Sony recently confirmed that the PS4 will include a headset and a large hard drive, and that controllers will be able to charge while the system is in standby mode.

Samsung to Launch New “Galaxy Mega” Series of Devices

South Korean mobile phone maker Samsung has already enjoyed increased success with its Galaxy S and Galaxy Note series of mobile phones.
samsung-galaxy-s-100021385-large-300x336
According to the latest rumor from mobile gossip site SamMobile, Samsung is planning to launch a series of new big-screen devices which don’t fit into its high-end Galaxy Note family, and will instead create a new range called the Galaxy Mega.

No official confirmation on the matter has emerged, but it seems that Samsung might unveil at least two handsets in the new series.

One of them might be GT-I9152, expected to be launched as Galaxy Mega 5.8, while the other would be GT-I9200, set to hit shelves as Galaxy Mega 6.3, each featuring the screen size mentioned in the name.

They’re both rumored to arrive in late May or early June; but for now, they remain distinctly unofficial.

Airtel Reduces Data Tariff Drastically With Magic Box Offer

· Allows internet access at 0.1 kobo per MB
Airtel 1
As the upsurge for data services by telecoms consumers increasingly competes with voice, leading telecoms service provider, Airtel Nigeria has introduced a special data offer for its customers to surf the net without burning holes in their pocket.

The special data package tagged ‘Airtel Magic Box offer’, empowers Airtel customers to enjoy internet services at a reduced rate fromas low as 0.1 kobo per MB, depending on customer’s allocated Pay As You Go (PAYU) data band.

The offer, designed for prepaid customers, has nine different PAYU bands, the highest of which provides customers with up to 1GB data bundle.

To enjoy the latest data product from Airtel, customers are to dial *758*2# to confirm their respective band and start browsing with ease.

Speaking on the offer, the Chief Marketing Officer, Olu Akanmu said the launch of Airtel Magic Box further demonstrates the brand’s recent message to Nigerians that “it has got them covered”.

The CMO stated:“Airtel’s broadband superiority draws from its 3.75G service coverage in almost 180 towns and cities across the country including Abuja, hence the company’s resolve to convey to its customers and especially those yet to embrace the network, to urgently do so and enjoy the many possibilities that being on the friendship network offers”.

The CMO added that the company decided to roll in another distinctive data product to already existing bouquet to herald its new Network Coverage Campaign tagged “Nigeria we’ve got you covered”, launched on Tuesday in Lagos, to demonstrateits robust and extensive network coverage across the country.

Speaking at a press conference to unveil the new campaign in Lagos, the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Airtel Nigeria, Segun Ogunsanya said the new advertising campaign on its network was necessary to draw attention to the enormous capacity of its network and its sweeping coverage of the length and breadth of the country which has given the company the confidence in its chances of success in the likely competition that would be occasioned by the imminent take off of the impending Mobile Number Portability.

VERIZON Announces iMessaging clone for Android, IOS and the Web(see video)

Verizon (VZ) on Thursday announced a new cross-platform update for its text messaging app for Android and iOS devices.

new

The application, known as Messages, allows users to send and receive a text message from a PC, smartphone or tablet. Messages are stored on Verizon’s cloud for up to 90 days or until deleted and can also be saved permanently on an SD card. Unlike services from WhatsApp, Google Talk and iMessage, the application utilizes your smartphone’s phone number rather than a username or special PIN. The service sets itself further apart from the competition with a handful of unique features such as the ability to send automated replies to a text when busy. Verizon’s Messages application is available now in Google Play and the iOS App Store. A video demo follows below.

Samsung galaxy S IV displaced Iphone 5 and other leading smartphones in early performance tests carried out.

Samsung’s Galaxy S 4 might not offer much in the way of an exciting new exterior design, but inside, it’s a completely different story.

01ss

The retooled internals on the U.S. version of the Galaxy S 4 were put to the test by benchmark specialists Primate Labs and the results are impressive, to say the least. The Galaxy S 4 scored a 3,163 on the standard Geekbench 2 speed test, just shy of twice the iPhone 5′s score of 1,596. That score was also good enough to top the upcoming HTC One, the Nexus 4 and the previous-generation Galaxy S III. The chart below shows the Galaxy S 4′s results compared to other leading smartphones tested by Primate Labs.

It should be noted, by the way, that this test was performed with the slow version of Samsung’s new flagship Android phone. The U.S. variant of the Galaxy S 4 is powered by a quad-core Snapdragon chipset that features integrated LTE radios. The international version of the phone will feature Samsung’s in-house eight-core Exynos process, which will likely offer significant performance benefits.
handsets-march-2013
Other key features on the Galaxy S 4 include a 5-inch Super AMOLED HD display, 2GB of RAM, up to 64GB of storage, a 13-megapixel camera and Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. BGR recently published an extensive hands-on preview of the Galaxy S 4 and we said it was better than its predecessor in nearly every way.

The new Samsung Galaxy IV Preview.

The king of Android phones is dead, long live the king. Samsung (005930) has taken the smartphone market by storm over the past few years, emerging as the clear leader in the Android smartphone race thanks to the Galaxy S III.

01ss

The company is the only serious rival to Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone empire in terms of profits and shipment volume, and it is now the top-selling cell phone vendor in the world. Led by the flagship Galaxy S III, which has sold more than 40 million units globally, Samsung’s Galaxy lineup has muscled every other Android vendor out of the spotlight. Now, the company is looking to extend its lead with the brand new Galaxy S 4.

Expectations leading up to Thursday’s Galaxy S 4 unveiling couldn’t have been higher as Samsung managed to keep its impossible promise and engineer Apple-like anticipation for its new flagship phone. Was it worth the wait? Put plainly, if you thought the Galaxy S III was impressive, the next-generation model is going to blow you away.

Samsung’s new smartphone bests its predecessor in nearly every possible way, from the display and the 13-megapixel camera to the software and unique features introduced alongside the latest version of TouchWiz. The Galaxy S 4 the Android smartphone by which all others will be judged in 2013.
The first thing I noticed when I picked up the new handset during a meeting with Samsung earlier today was probably the only real qualm I have with this phone. While the Galaxy S 4 is thinner and a bit more sleek than the Galaxy S III, it’s also lighter and it feels even less like a high-end device.

Samsung made sure to repeatedly specify that the Galaxy S 4′s case is made of polycarbonate, not just any old plastic, but it still feels very cheap. In this regard, the Galaxy S 4 doesn’t hold a candle to devices like the HTC (2498) One or Apple’s iPhone 5.

Luckily for Samsung, tens of millions of people didn’t seem to care about the feel of the Galaxy S III thanks to its numerous strengths, and the same will likely be true with the Galaxy S 4. Besides, the build quality is quite good aside from the feel and the moment you tap the unlock button to turn on the Galaxy S 4′s display, you forget all about its light plastic case.

It’s difficult to state this conclusively since I only spent about 15 minutes with the handset, but it very well might have the best display that I’ve ever seen on a smartphone. It’s stunning. The the contrast and color depth on this 5-inch, full HD Super AMOLED panel are shocking. And with a pixel density of 441 ppi, the clarity is better than any other Samsung display on the market. The end result is a smartphone that I simply couldn’t look away from — except when I was testing Smart Pause.
Samsung’s version of Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean has been heavily customized and there are a host of intriguing new features. The most novel among them utilize touch-free controls, though the smartphone does not include any eye-tracking capabilities despite earlier reports.

Smart Pause, which I mentioned above, uses facial recognition to take note when the user is paying attention to media playing on the handset’s display. When the user turns his or her face away from the screen, the phone’s front-facing camera sees this and automatically pauses media playback.

A related feature is Smart Scroll, which was mistakenly reported as a function that makes use of eye-tracking technology. With Smart Scroll enabled, the Galaxy S 4 will recognize when the user is looking at the device and reading content. The user can then tilt the phone forward or back to scroll up or down. Samsung said that eye-tracking technology simply isn’t accurate and reliable enough for a function like this.

Another nifty new feature is Air Gestures, which can perform a number of tasks. A waving gesture in front of the display lets the user flip through songs or images, or even answer a call without touching the phone. Functions like these are great for when you’re driving a car and the phone is in a dock.

Air View, the hovering feature that was introduced with the Galaxy Note II, is also present on the Galaxy S 4 — the main difference being that the S Pen stylus is no longer needed. Simply hover a message or thumbnail with a finger and a preview will pop up on the display.

And thankfully, there is now a new page on the drop-down notifications pane that groups all of these unique new TouchWiz features on one page with toggles to enable and disable them.

The camera software on the Galaxy S 4 has been completely retooled compared to the Galaxy S III’s camera. In fact, it’s the same software that powers Samsung’s Galaxy Camera. There are tons of new features to enjoy such as Dual Shot, which captures photos with the front and rear cameras simultaneously and combines the two images; Sound & Shot, which adds up to nine seconds of audio to a still image; and Cinema Photo, which captures a video and lets the user select which areas should be animated and which should be still, resulting in a GIF where only select portions of the image are animated.

The last new features I’ll cover in this preview should be of particular interest to companies like Jawbone and Fitbit. With the Galaxy S 4, Samsung is launching an all-out attack on the fitness accessory industry. The company’s new S Health suite of apps makes use of a pedometer to track steps, an accelerometer and gyro sensor to track activity, humidity and temperature sensors to track environment, and an integrated food-tracking app that lets the user monitor caloric intake.

If sensors are the next big thing, Samsung just got a serious jump on the competition.
I found the Galaxy S 4 to be very responsive during my tests, thanks no doubt to the 2GB of RAM and the eight-core processor that powers the phone. Samsung’s Exynos 5 Octa chipset seemed to handle anything and everything I could throw at it, though the phone was running pre-release software and I did hit a few snags with the front-facing camera not recognizing gestures right away. This is something that will hopefully be ironed out by the time the phone launches.

It’s also worth noting that the U.S. version of Samsung’s Galaxy S 4, which will be available on every major carrier as well as several regional carriers, is powered by a quad-core Snapdragon chipset rather than Samsung’s in-house eight-core chip.

Amazing: See How The New Samsung Galaxy S4 Will Be Controlled With Your Eye Movements

Samsung’s next Galaxy smartphone might be controlled by nothing more than the user’s eyes, according to a new report in advance of its March 14 unveiling.
Samsung-Galaxy-S4-leak
“Eye scrolling” will do things like scroll down a page of text when the user’s eyes have reached the bottom of the screen, according to a New York Times report.

Quoting an unnamed Samsung employee who has used the phone, the Times said the Samsung Galaxy S IV, the next generation in its popular Galaxy S line, will be more heavily geared toward new software than a physical reboot of the Android-based device.

The Korean company has for all practical purposes announced the Galaxy S IV will be unveiled at a New York City event on March 14.

The Times interviewed Kevin Packingham, Samsung’s chief product officer. While he declined to talk about software upgrades, he said hardware upgrades will be significant. “It’s an amazing phone,” he said.

Reports of an eye-control innovation make sense. Samsung has filed in Europe to trademark a technology called “Eye Scroll” and another named “Eye Pause.”

Samsung described “Eye Scroll” as “computer application software having a feature of sensing eye movements and scrolling displays of mobile devices, namely, mobile phones, smartphones and tablet computers according to eye movements; digital cameras; mobile telephones; smartphones; tablet computers.”

The Samsung Galaxy S III already has a similar feature called “Smart Stay.” It uses the phone’s front-facing camera to register whether the user is looking at it and keeps the display screen from going into sleep mode until the user looks away.

Samsung’s Galaxy S line has emerged as the strongest challenger to Apple’s industry-leading iPhone.

The Galaxy S III shipped 18 million units worldwide from July to September, compared with 16.2 million for the iPhone 4S, according to research by Strategy Analytics.
With the release of the iPhone 5, Apple retook the lead in the final months of 2012, selling an estimated 27 million. But the S III hung in there with another 15 million units sold.

Identify your friends by their clothing through GOOGLE GLASS

Google’s Project Glass is one of the most highly anticipated devices of the year, even though we still don’t know much about it.

google-hud-glasses

As we inch closer to release, which is scheduled for the end of this year, more information about the device is starting to trickle out and new reports suggest the capabilities of Google Glass could be nearly endless. New Scientist reports that Google has helped fund a new application called InSight that’s designed specifically for Glass and is able to identify people based on the clothing they wear.

InSight is designed to identify a person based on their “fashion fingerprint” that can help you recognize someone if they’re too far away for facial recognition cameras or have their back turned to you. The fingerprint is constructed with the help of a smartphone app that takes a series of photos of a person and then creates a file known as a “spatiogram” that identifies the colors, textures and patterns of the clothes they are wearing. The information is then used by Google Glass to identify the person. Best of all, the fingerprint changes every time the person changes their clothes, meaning you can go back to being anonymous after a single outing.

Early tests have indicated that the software is extremely accurate and with the help of 15 volunteers it was able to identify a person 93% of the time, even if their backs were turned.

Google Glass is scheduled to be released before the end of the year and will cost less than $1,500.

IPHONE 5S unlikely to have Wireless charging

Anyone who wants their next iPhone to have wireless charging capabilities may be out of luck. 9to5Mac on Friday shot down a Digitimes report claiming that Apple is looking to bring wireless charging to its next-generation iPhone 5S.

download

The reason that this rumor is unlikely, 9to5Mac says, is that “we’ve been hearing 2013 is an ‘S’ year for the iPhone which implies minor design changes” and “the design changes to the aluminum shell to make wireless charging possible would need to be significant,” thus making it unlikely that Apple would pursue them during this particular product cycle. Needless to say, if Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S IV has wireless charging and the iPhone 5S does not, we expect them to make fun of Apple yet again for allegedly being behind the times.

Speculations purportedly leaked for HTC’S upcoming ‘FACEBOOK PHONE’

Does the world really want a “Facebook (FB) Phone?” Probably not, but that apparently isn’t going to stop HTC from delivering one.

facebook-sign-89

UnwiredView’s evleaks has posted a set of specifications that are purportedly for the HTC Myst, a yet-to-be-announced smartphone that is centered around Facebook. In case you don’t remember, HTC has tried something like this back in 2011 with the ill-fated HTC Status smartphone that had a dedicated Facebook button and that looked like a rejected BlackBerry (BBRY) design concept from around 2006. The HTC Myst will reportedly be somewhat more like a modern smartphone, however, with a 4.3-inch touch display with a resolution of 320 pixels per inch, a MSM8960 dual-core 1.5GHz processor, 1GB of RAM and a 5 megapixel rear-facing camera. While these aren’t exactly high-end specs, it’s unlikely that HTC is going to push the Myst as a premium device, especially since it sold the HTC Status for a mere $50 with a two-year agreement from AT&T (T).

The aggressively priced Lumia 620 is Nokia’s make or break model.

Nokia (NOK) has started pricing the Lumia 620 in Asia nearly 20% below the rival Windows mid-market model, the HTC 8S. This is remarkably aggressive considering the 620 has a higher pixel density and twice as much internal memory.

index

The 620 is the keystone phone for Nokia. It is launching before RIM (RIMM) gets its new budget BlackBerry phones out and before Samsung or LG enter the mid-priced Windows phone market. This is the phone that will make or break Nokia’s summer.

Nokia has started rolling out the Lumia 620 in several key Asian markets by the third week of January. It now looks like its European debut could happen a few weeks earlier than expected, perhaps by the end of January. In one of the earliest launch markets, Thailand, the launch price of the Lumia 620 is set at 8,250 baht, or $275. The only direct Windows mid-range model, HTC’s 8S, is priced at 9,990 baht. The Lumia 620 is priced at 800 RM ($266) in Malaysia, one of Asia’s key mobile markets. HTC’s 8S launched in Malaysia at 999 RM.

Nokia is the stronger brand in South-East Asia and HTC’s budget Windows model was expected to be at rough price parity during the 620 launch, not 20% above. Nokia’s Lumia 620 features display pixel density of 246 pixels per inch, a touch above the 233 pixels per inch that HTC’s 8S offers. The 620 also packs 8 GB of internal memory, twice as much as the 8S. Camera and video quality are roughly similar.

This is the golden opportunity for Nokia. It will probably take at least until June before RIM rolls out new BlackBerries priced under $300 in Asia; possibly late summer or autumn. Samsung and LG are a step behind Nokia in rolling out their Windows Phone 8 ranges. HTC’s first mid-range model doesn’t quite measure up to the 620 in value for money comparison. Apple’s (AAPL) rumored cheap iPhone is unlikely to arrive before September.

Nokia now has a shot at recapturing some of the power it used to have in the mid-range smartphone market. Back in 2006 through 2008 Nokia dominated the smartphone markets of Asia and Europe with absolute sovereignty, capturing market shares as high as 70% from India to Germany. Those days won’t return, but if the 620 clicks, Nokia just might have a shot at pumping the Lumia volume to 10 million units per quarter by autumn.

The relative market softness in the sub-$300 category due to the current weakness of RIM, LG, Sony (SNE) and HTC has opened the door. This is going to be an absolutely crucial mooment for Nokia as it ramps up its most important Lumia phone during the traditionally dead period in Asia and Europe. If consumers don’t connect with this model at this price, the entire Windows Phone camp will face some very tough decisions.

Galaxy S IV to include new Eye-tracking Technology for Touch-Free control

Samsung plans to introduce new eye-tracking technology in its next-generation Galaxy S IV smartphone, according to a new report.

samsung-sign-923

With just over a week before Samsung unveils its new flagship smartphone,it was reported to have spoken to a person who has tried the Galaxy S IV, and he or she detailed new eye-tracking technology that allows the user to scroll through pages without having to tough or tilt the phone at all — pages will scroll automatically as the user’s eyes move down the screen. The new feature will reportedly be demonstrated live during Samsung’s Galaxy S IV unveiling next week.

Sony aims for third place in global smartphone market

Sony (SNE) is looking to beat out its Chinese rivals and become the third largest vendor in the global smartphone market, Reuters reported.

bgr-2012-01-10-sony-ces-001

The head of the Sony’s mobile business Kunimasa Suzuki hinted that the company may soon begin producing cheaper smartphone models that target developing nations, noting that it plans to “alter smartphone development for each market.” Sony’s rumored quad-core Xperia smartphone could also help the company increase its share in markets across Europe and the United States.

Samsung and Apple account for more than a half of all smartphone shipments, making third place a coveted position for vendors in the lucrative smartphone market. The latest numbers from research firm IDC placed Sony in fourth place with a 4.5% share of the market. The company was able to edge out ZTE by 0.2 percentage points and wasn’t far off Huawei’s 4.9% market share.

Sony will also have to face off against HTC, however, which hopes to win back consumers with its new HTC One smartphone.

Smartphone shipments to top feature phone shipment for the first time ever in 2013.

We’re rapidly approaching a time when we can start referring to smartphones as simply “phones.”

bgr-best-smartphones-2012

According to the latest projections from market research firm IDC, smartphone shipments will top feature phone shipments for the first time ever this year, with China accounting for nearly one-third of all smartphones projected to ship in 2013. According to IDC, vendors will sell 918.6 million smartphones into channels in 2013, including 301.2 million devices shipped to China, 137.5 million shipped to the United States and 35.5 million shipped to the United Kingdom.

While China’s rise is the primary driver of smartphone adoption in 2013, IDC says that we shouldn’t overlook the roles that Brazil and India will play in the coming years to push smartphone use even higher.

“While we don’t expect China’s smartphone growth to maintain the pace of a runaway train as it has over the last two years, there continue to be big drivers to keep the market growing as it leads the way to ever- lower smartphone prices and the country’s transition to 4G networks is only just beginning,” said IDC analyst Melissa Chau. “Even as China starts to mature, there remains enormous untapped potential in other emerging markets like India, where we expect less than half of all phones shipped there to be smartphones by 2017, and yet it will weigh in as the world’s third largest market.”

IDC’s press release is posted below.

Smartphones Expected to Outship Feature Phones for First Time in 2013, According to IDC

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. March 4, 2013 – More smartphones are forecast to be shipped globally than feature phones in 2013, the first such occurrence in the mobile phone market on an annual basis. According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors will ship 918.6 million smartphones this year, or 50.1% of the total mobile phone shipments worldwide.

Smartphone prices have fallen globally, the smartphone strata are wider than ever, and the roll-out of data-centric fourth-generation (4G) wireless networks are three factors that have made these “do-it-all” devices an increasingly attractive option for users. By the end of 2017, IDC forecasts 1.5 billion smartphones will be shipped worldwide, which equates to just over two-thirds of the total mobile phone forecast for the year due to these primary factors.

To date, much of the world’s smartphone shipments were a direct result of demand in mature economies such as the U.S. The balance of smartphone demand is gradually shifting, however, to emerging markets where smartphone user bases are still relatively small and economic prospects are considerably higher. Smartphone shipments to China, Brazil, and India will comprise a growing percentage of the device type’s volume in each forecast year. Smartphone demand is burgeoning in these large, populous nations as their respective economies have grown; this has made for a larger middle class that is prepared to buy smartphones. China, which supplanted the U.S. last year as the global leader in smartphone shipments, is at the forefront of this shift.

“While we don’t expect China’s smartphone growth to maintain the pace of a runaway train as it has over the last two years, there continue to be big drivers to keep the market growing as it leads the way to ever- lower smartphone prices and the country’s transition to 4G networks is only just beginning,” said Melissa Chau, Senior Research Manager, IDC Asia/Pacific. “Even as China starts to mature, there remains enormous untapped potential in other emerging markets like India, where we expect less than half of all phones shipped there to be smartphones by 2017, and yet it will weigh in as the world’s third largest market.”

Brazil is another market where smartphone growth will remain high over the course of the forecast as its economic fortunes improve. “Brazilians have yet to turn in their feature phones for smartphones on a wholesale basis,” said Bruno Freitas, Consumer Devices Research Manager, IDC Brazil. “The smartphone tide is turning in Brazil though, as wireless service providers and the government have laid the groundwork for a strong smartphone foundation that mobile phone manufacturers can build upon.”

APPLE TO REPORTEDLY LAUNCH ‘IPHONE 5S’ AND CHEAPER IPHONE IN AUGUST

Apple (AAPL) has plans to launch multiple new iPhone models this summer, according to a new report. Citing claims made by Barclays Capital analysts,

iphone-5-photos-review-6

Chinese-language tech blog EMSOne reported on Friday that Apple will launch its next-generation “iPhone 5S” alongside the much rumored low-end iPhone model this coming August. The report claims that both Foxconn and Pegatron will be tasked with manufacturing the new entry-level iPhone, which may include a 4.5-inch display and a polycarbonate case according to an earlier report. Apple’s iPhone 5S will supposedly feature a design similar to the current iPhone 5 but with various new color options and other tweaks.

NOKIA CEO ISSUES WARNING TO BLACKBERRY: ‘I’M VERY INTERESTED IN BLACKBERRY CUSTOMERS’

BlackBerry (BBRY) has clearly seen some early success with its next-generation BlackBerry Z10 smartphone, but there are still a number of barriers on the road ahead.

nokia-sign-elop

BlackBerry 10 targets consumers and business customers alike, but while many saw a certain level of enterprise success as a sure thing just 12 months ago, increased competition from the likes of Apple (AAPL) and Samsung (005930) may be disconcerting. Adding further fuel to the fire, Nokia (NOK) CEO Steven Elop recently confirmed that he too is gunning for BlackBerry’s business user base.

When asked during an interview with Bloomberg how important enterprise customers are to Nokia, Elop wasn’t shy in touting Windows Phone’s various advantages over other platforms — particularly BlackBerry.

“I get asked a lot of questions about this relative to BlackBerry, and what I’ll say is: I’m very interested in BlackBerry customers,” Elop said. Nokia plans to go after BlackBerry users and show them “a very different, very modern and very superior business experience.”

Elop noted that large companies such as Coca Cola are shifting away from BlackBerry handsets and other smartphones in some markets, and adopting Lumia phones. The executive points to Windows Phone’s Office solution, SharePoint, Exchange support, Lync and other key factors as providing clear advantages over the competition

FORMER APPLE MARKETING GURU BROUGHT IN TO SAVE MOTOROLA AS GOOGLE’S PANIC GROWS

There is no end to the humiliation the old Motorola guard is being forced to endure. Google’s (GOOG) top executives keep making disparaging comments about Motorola handsets.

motorolam-e1349785920661

Many Motorola leaders have effectively been hounded out of the company via insulting contract negotiations. And now a legendary Apple (AAPL) star, Guy Kawasaki, is being brought in to teach the grandmother of the cell phone industry how to dance the Harlem Shake. Kawasaki is mostly known for his contribution in developing some of Apple’s most successful computer marketing campaigns, notably for Macintosh back in the Eighties.

Google’s anxiety over Motorola’s lackluster performance has spiked over the past year as Samsung (005930) has risen to utterly dominate the Android phone market. Google’s original plan was to turn the Android ecosystem into a kind of Versailles where it would play the role of the Sun King, favoring HTC (2498) this year and Motorola the next, carefully maintaining a balance between the handset aristocracy.

Then HTC, LG (066570) and Motorola all screwed up simultaneously, allowing Samsung to grab total power. It is darkly comical that when Google bought Motorola in the summer of 2011, people were seriously worried that this would give Motorola an insurmountable advantage over Asian vendors.

Since then, Motorola’s position at even U.S. carriers like AT&T (T) and T-Mobile has eroded badly, turning the brand effectively into a Verizon (VZ) house label. Motorola has built an R&D and manufacturing base in Brazil, but its Latin American advances have stopped since a promising period around 2010. The entire Motorola strategy of designing separate phone lines for different operators has been an unmitigated disaster as the industry pivoted to the opposite direction. Apple and Samsung’s winning strategy has been to create a single massive flagship line that is sold to dozens of operators across the world.

Motorola is now trying to copy the Appsung strategy and create one massive blockbuster model that would stem the slide towards irrelevance. Kawasaki may have been brought in to mastermind the marketing plan for this big bet. The problem is that Google’s haughty and insulting treatment of Motorola executives has created a massive brain drain. The old teams have been blown up and Google is struggling to recreate product development units that can manage integration of new technologies into a cutting edge phone combined with realistic planning for effective production ramp-up.

The high-end smartphone business has become fiendishly complicated because Apple and Samsung have sped up the development cycle while simultaneously hogging crucial component supply. Companies like Nokia (NOK), LG and BlackBerry are now struggling badly to reach decent production volumes for key models. Planning a new phone requires a very tricky combination of engineering and predictive supply chain management.

Google has driven much of Motorola’s key talent out of Chicago and it now needs to quickly find a way to rebuild what it demolished. Needless to say, much of the top talent would rather work for Apple, Samsung or emerging global powers like Huawei.

DOES THE WORLD NEED ANOTHER NEW MOBILE OS? FIREFOX AND ZTE THINK SO

The new ZTE (0763) Open is perhaps more significant for what it’s not than what it is.

zte

The handset does not run Android, iOS, Windows Phone, BlackBerry 10 or Tizen. In a world dominated by just a few established major players, the introduction of Firefox’s new mobile OS, alongside handsets such as the Open, is pretty big news. Banking on the untapped demand in emerging markets yet to see the explosion of smartphone growth that has swept the rest of the planet, Firefox and ZTE are hoping to make headway with their own unique offering.

Firefox is an html5-based operating system, which is to say that the software is essentially a web browser. All apps are web-based, and as such are accessible from any html5-equipped browser. Firefox OS is entirely open source and Mozilla is offering the software completely free to its OEM partners. The software is still in beta phase with no official release scheduled for a few months, but we did have the chance to put the ZTE Open through its paces.

The device has a 3.5-inch HVGA screen with a diminutive 320 x 480-pixel resolution. A single core processor that will be clocked between 600MHz and 800MHz, 256MB of RAM, a 3.2-megapixel camera and Bluetooth round out the anemic feature set, though handset’s unsubsidized retail price of under $100 makes up for it. The phone feels sturdy in the hand and though adjectives such as “premium” and “luxury” certainly won’t cross your mind, it’s not the cheapest feeling handset we’ve ever encountered. The screen looks pretty bad, but that’s more or less to be expected.

Navigating the OS, the first word that comes to mind is “sluggish.” Sure it’s pre-release software, but we had to wait a few beats after almost every touch input, and delays when swiping from side to side were painful. Even the top-level apps like phone, messaging and contact applications moved at a snail’s pace. And lag issues aside, the app selection is sorely lacking. Save for the usual suspects like Twitter and YouTube, there wasn’t much to speak of.

To be fair, the phone is targeted squarely at a population that might be encountering an enhanced handset experience for the first time, either as an upgrade from a feature phone or as their first mobile handset. However, with competitors like Nokia’s Asha 305 coming to market for under $80, Firefox and ZTE can’t really afford to bring such a lackluster experience to users without risking failure.

Photos: Chromebook Pixel Touch-Screen Laptop By Google

The Chromebook Pixel runs Google’s Chrome operating system and has been “largely built” by the web giant.
google-unveils-touchscreen-laptop-1361566699-8860
The laptop has Intel’s Ivy Bridge processors, fast 4G LTE connectivity and a high-resolution screen aimed at challenging Apple’s Retina Display.

Analysts say the move represents a fresh bid to build market share for Chromebooks against machines running Microsoft and Apple operating systems.

Unlike PCs that use installed software such as Microsoft Word, Chrome OS computers run their applications through the firm’s web browser and store their files in the cloud.
130221170114-google-chromebook-pixel-story-top
The internet giant told the BBC the device was “largely built by Google, with components that are manufactured globally”.

The laptop’s 12.85in (32.64cm) display’s resolution is similar to the so-called Retina Display of Apple’s MacBook range, aimed to have pixel density high enough for the human eye not to notice pixelation when looking at the screen at a typical viewing distance.

“This Chromebook has the highest pixel density (239 pixels per inch) of any laptop screen on the market today,” said the company.

“Packed with 4.3 million pixels, the display offers sharp text, vivid colours and extra-wide viewing angles.

The challenge for the Chromebook is that computing is shifting towards tablets”

Geoff Blaber CCS Insight

“With a screen this rich and engaging, you want to reach out and touch it — so we added touch for a more immersive experience.”
Embracing the cloud

The first Chrome-powered laptop, built by Samsung, went on sale in June 2011. Chrome laptops that followed were made by Acer, Lenovo and HP.

But so far, Chromebooks have had difficulties challenging Windows-powered computers, said CCS Insight analyst Geoff Blaber.

“Chromebooks have struggled for relevance to date, stuck between comparably-priced but entertainment-centric tablets – many of which run Android – and more functional PCs,” he said.

“[The new computer] won’t transform its prospects but Google will hope it serves as a flagship device that has a halo effect for the broader portfolio.”

Windows 8, Microsoft’s latest operating system launched last year, has touchscreen capabilities.

Mr Blaber said: “Touch is now pervasive across every computing category from phones to high-end PCs.

“The challenge for the Chromebook is that computing is shifting towards tablets whilst most consumers lives are not yet fully embracing the cloud versus local storage.”

Among the exciting features covered during the unveiling is a new sleep function that keeps the PS4 on in a low-power state when not in use, completely eliminating the hassle of waiting for the console to boot up. The new PlayStation will also be able to download new games like most consoles can, but gamers will be able to begin playing them immediately following a purchase while the bulk of a game file continues downloading.

Sony will introduce a new technology with the PS4 that allows users to take control of friends’ controllers over the network to help them when they’re stuck in a game — a feature that will be welcomed by many.

The PlayStation Network is being updated alongside the launch of the new PlayStation 4, adding a wide array of new social features like Facebook integration, as well as a new own-brand social network dedicated to gaming. New multicasting and cooperative gaming features will be introduced as well.

Another highlight from Wednesday’s announcements is new PS Vita integration, which allows games to be streamed from the PlayStation 4 to the Vita, thus moving the game off the TV and onto a portable device. And while Sony is working on cross-compatibility features with older games, PlayStation 3 games will not be natively supported on the new PlayStation 4.

Sony’s new PlayStation 4 will launch ahead of the holidays this year.

MICROSOFT TO REPORTEDLY UNVEIL NEXT XBOX AT APRIL EVENT

The debut of Sony’s (SNE) PlayStation 4 is now behind us, so Microsoft (MSFT) is next in line to take a crack at grabbing gamers’ attention with its next-generation console.

xbox

The Redmond, Washington-based company has worked its way to the top with its current-generation Xbox 360, which just recorded its twenty-fifth consecutive month as the best-selling console in the U.S. Now, according to a new report from Computer and Video Games, unnamed “developers and other industry professionals” including multiple Sony employees say Microsoft’s next Xbox will be unveiled at a press conference in April. No other details were provided, but the next Xbox is expected to feature an eight-core 1.6GHz CPU, 8GB of RAM and a 50GB 6x Blu-ray Disc drive.

Microsoft ready to deliver 7-inch Windows tablet

Microsoft has confirmed that it’s ready and willing to deliver devices sporting the screen sizes customers desire, igniting thoughts that a 7-inch Windows tablet may be on its way.

Surface-Press-01-580-75
Speaking during a Q&A session at the Goldman Sachs Technology & Internet Conference, Microsoft’s CFO Peter Klein explained the Redmond firm was ready for all eventualities.
In regards to offering different screen sizes, from 4- to 13-inches and beyond Klein said: “We’ve done a lot of the hard work in the developer platform. We are well set up to respond to demand as we see it.”
Supply and demand

As the budget tablet market continues to boom thanks to products such as the Google Nexus 7 and Amazon Kindle Fire HD we expect it’s only a matter of time until Microsoft dips its toe in the water.
It appears even more likely when you consider that its Surface RT and Surface Pro slates sit right at the top the tablet market with price tags out of reach for many consumers.
Of course Microsoft wouldn’t be drawn on commenting on future products, or even if it is considering a 7-inch tablet, but it looks like it has a few things up its sleeve that Google, Samsung, Apple and co. will need to keep an eye on

Facebook Bans Facebook Employees From Using Facebook At Work

Citing low efficiency and insufficient employee productivity, Facebook has decided to restrict employee access to Facebook during working hours.
mark-zuckerberg
The decision came after Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg asked members of his IT team to generate a list of the websites Facebook employees visit most often. Zuckerberg ordered the list to make sure that his employees were putting their working hours to the best possible use, sources report.

“I was horrified when I saw that most workers pretty much spend their entire day just hanging around on Facebook,” Mr. Zuckerberg said. “It seems that liking statuses and checking out other peoples’ profiles, summer holiday photos, and funny kitten links has become a normal thing to do all day, and we can’t have that if we’re going to maintain a healthy and productive atmosphere for work.”

Mr. Zuckerberg also claims that the Facebook ban at Facebook could increase efficiency by up to 40 percent. According to recent reports, employees of the company have already announced a planned strike, and have issued an ultimatum to Facebook’s management.

“If the founder of our company does not drop the ban, there will be a general strike, which will probably jeopardize this company’s very existence,” read a statement in the employees’ official ultimatum letter.

On Friday morning, Outlook.com (and by extension Office 365) experienced intermittent issues, ranging from trouble accessing Windows Intune and webmail to mail being inaccessible altogether.
The issues with 365 lasted for around two hours, though a message from the Office 365 and Windows Azure team suggested that the “short-term issue resulting from routine maintenance” only lasted a half hour.
Users across the web reported issues with Microsoft’s Bing search service platform earlier today, which lasted for almost two hours until the service kicked back in on all browsers.
Getting Microsoft?

Microsoft’s vague explanation of the “isolated technical issues” with Bing and the Office 365 outage do not appear to be related despite the proximity in timing.
While Microsoft didn’t comment as to the specific cause for either of these outages, it seems that the software-developer-gone-web-host isn’t without its seams.
And it’s not alone, since Amazon’s EC2 service and web host Go Daddy saw some serious down-time last year.
Even the U.S. government has had a hard time keeping all of its sites free from undesired interruptions.
But if Microsoft wants to start leaning heavily on leased copies of Office 13 (through Office 365) and capitalize on the potential of its Office 365 web apps, it will need to build real confidence in the service’s stability.
If Bing goes down again, though, we’ll just Google it.

BlackBerry 10 is finally here.See the features and functions

After a number of delays and setbacks, BlackBerry 10 is finally here, and BlackBerry’s new mobile platform can finally take its first breath as it steps out into the mobile market.
Kicking off the BB10 revolution is the BlackBerry Z10, a phone tasked with reigniting the ailing fortunes of the Canadian firm. But it’s the software the handset is running that is really the key to BlackBerry’s success, or ultimate demise.
The BlackBerry smartphone range has been in desperate need of a reboot for a while as the likes of iOS 6, Android Jelly Bean and Windows Phone 8 have outstripped the now extremely outdated BB OS7 platform.

Whereas the other platforms have witnessed incremental upgrades, BlackBerry 10 is a completely new offering – BlackBerry has scrapped the BB OS7 base and rebuilt from the ground up.
BB 10 sees the implementation of a whole new user interface, doing away with the familiar BlackBerry system we’re all used to in favour of something that resembles the likes of Android and iOS, although with its own unique features.
BlackBerry 10 has merged homescreens, widgets, app lists and a unified inbox into one slick interface, offering up an easy-to-navigate user experience.

Lock screen

The first thing you’re greeted with on BlackBerry 10 is the lock screen, which not only shows the time and date, but also notifications, unread messages and upcoming calendar events.
There’s a button to launch the camera straight from the lock screen to grab a quick snap, just hold down on the icon for a couple of seconds.
To unlock a touchscreen BB 10 handset you need to slide your finger up the screen. As you do, the homescreen below will begin to appear, giving you a sneak peek of what’s underneath.
Homescreen

Homescreen-07-210-100
The main BlackBerry 10 homescreen is comprised of ‘Active Frames’, technically mini-applications, which give you an overview of information from a particular app and launch the full version when tapped.

BB10 will display up to eight of these active frames, showing your most recently used apps with the latest app appearing in the top-left position.
Only four active frames can fit on the screen at a time, so you’ll need to scroll down to see the rest – which all seems a little pointless, since you can just as quickly swipe sideways to access the app list and launch the app you want from there.
For those of you who may be concerned that these ‘Active Frames’ could be both data and battery-intensive, BlackBerry assures us that this is not the case, with the QNX core of BlackBerry 10 providing efficient power management, and the frames only downloading the minimum amount of data required for them to update.
When you’re in an app there’s no back button. Instead, with BB10 you use a gesture to exit applications by running your finger up from the bottom of the screen.
While this is easy to do, those who are already familiar with other smartphones will find the action pretty unnatural, and it takes a while to get used to the new way of doing things on BlackBerry 10.

Swiping from right to left will take you to the app list, with 16 apps on the screen at any one time.
If you have more than 16 apps, additional pages are added and can be accessed by swiping the same way again, which is familiar territory for iOS and Android users.
At the bottom of both the homescreen and app list you’ll notice a shortcut bar, with quick links to the phone, search and camera applications, enabling you to quickly jump to these regularly used features.
There’s a pleasant fading animation as you flick between pages, and you’ll see the previous page of apps fade away to the side of the screen, to be replaced by the new page.
Peek and Flow

Peek-01-210-100
Peek and Flow are two core aspects that come heavily baked into BlackBerry 10 and they dictate the way you use the system.
Flow refers to the way the whole of BB 10 operates, as you glide between applications and screens with no hard navigation tools such as the back or home buttons that are found on rival handsets.
It’s very different to any system we’ve experienced before, so it took us a few days to get our heads around the various gestures required to effectively use BB10.
At times we wished there was a simple back button below the screen, since it wasn’t always clear how to return to the previous screen. But the more we used BlackBerry 10 the more we became used to the way it needs to be used.
Our concern here is that BB 10 requires a relatively steep learning curve for everyone, even those who have owned BlackBerry handsets in the past.

It becomes easier once you’ve played with BlackBerry 10 for a few days, but we fear customers may be turned off in-store when they preview a handset.
Now onto Peek, which is the smart little gesture enabling you to check your latest notifications and messages without having to exit the current app you’re using.
As you swipe up over the screen, BB10 will minimise the pane you’re viewing and display notification icons down the left side.
This includes icons for new texts, emails, BBMs, social updates and missed calls, and if any of these pique your interest then continue your finger’s motion to the right and the screen will slide over to reveal the BlackBerry Hub so you can see who the message is from.
